Loooong songs

(Note: I'm putting this into the J-Rock section, because most music-discussion goes on here, but this is in no means limited to japanese music)

So... as the title says, it's about long songs. Since "long" is rather relative I define it as songs 7 minutes and above . Obviously some people would say that a song is only long if it's above 10 or 15, or 20 minutes or whatever, but I rather use the lowest common denominator, and it seems to me that standard songs are usually between 4 and 6 minutes.

So... what do you think of long songs? Like them? Hate them? What are your favourite long songs, and what is the longest song you ever listened to (as a whole without skipping)?

Whenever I listen to long songs (Green Carnation, X Japan, Moonsorrow, Devil Doll, Reverend Bizarre or whatever) I always listen through the whole song without pausing or skipping.

I'm a fan of long songs in general. It gives the band a real chance to build up over time and make the climax even bigger, better, whatever. But good songs are good songs, be them 7 seconds or 1 hour and 20 minutes long.

Meh, depends on the song. Some long songs I like because they sound like 8 songs mashed into one mp3, like 70% of everything Dream Theater ever released (although not all of them are that interesting). For me, long is 6:30 or longer.

I have the files for / have listened to other songs, some longer, some around the same length, but they don't really come to mind as favorites when thinking about this. I tend to favor songs at around 3~4 minutes long with really catchy melodies the most in terms of listening to them on repeat (by repeat I mean 2~4 times. I can't listen to the same song over and over again).

The longest song I've ever listened to without skipping, I think, is "The Odyssey" by Symphony X (24:12). Others include "Octavarium" and "A Change of Seasons" by Dream Theater, and "2010" by HYSTERIC BLAME...even though that's 22 minutes of silence, and then 1:30 of cool synth / other song excerpts.

I think I prefer long songs from more "avantgarde" artists (dunno how you interpret that, so let's say "unconventional" instead) than from regular pop/rock/metal bands, except for a very small number of exceptions.

Basically anything from Acid Mothers Temple (any of their variations).

My longest would have to be Delirium Cordia by Fantômas (74 minutes).

I could say I revel in long songs

The longest song I ever listened is by Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Providence (29:04) I think (all their song are pretty long)

but I hate when the song is ... just long but half or more is just silence or some noise for example this 激情旅楽団??祥 - タイトル??明 (16:27) above half of this song is just chirping

Long songs are a mix bag for me. Some do it great and those are ones I consider I can listen to from beginning to end without day dreaming. Others could shave a minute or two off because it seems like a lame attempt at trying to be long and 'epic'. Eh, it just depends.

I ain't counting songs from movie soundtracks since many of those are pretty long but they're different from just an actual long song.

These are all bands that I listen to often, and I absolutely LOVE all the songs I listed now. One thing that I find kinda "funny", is that because of all these songs are so good, they feel alot shorter than songs that I find bad like The Gazette's "Guren" or Dir en grey's "The Pledge". And that's how good songs work for me, they always seem short as fuck no matter how long they are, just like bad songs feel as if they are gonna last forever.

Just like when you're bored and the time goes slow as fuck, and when you're having fun the hours feels like minutes and so on. Like a baaaad movie seem to be 5 hours long even though it is only 75 minutss long, and a good movie that lasts for 3 hours feel like 30 minutes and so on.

And as I said earlier on, there exist good and bad long songs. But when they really nail it, it really gets special because of how they can use build ups and all that. I really love that!

That is my absolute biggest pet peeve when it comes to music. Any sort of obnoxious filler in the middle of a song I just don't like at all. Especially if it starts up sounding like a completely different song. Then I just wish they broke it up into two different songs.

Despite being split into like 21 songs, Kalisia's album Cybion is technically one long song, it breaks at about 70 minutes long and is my all time favorite track/album/composition of all time. Some other long ass songs I like are:
