Types of music you have a weakness for

Recommended Posts

I have a fetish for carnival inserts  . It doesn't have to samples of fair rides or anything, but sections that go into 6/8 time and have a bass snare snare bass snare snare drum pattern...hnnggggg

EXAMPLES:

QNayZkM8Stw

2:39~3:07

B4QjUTDdKJ0

1:24~1:58

bYXhyR1xpe8

2:48~3:03

vellaDonna: Untruth

If I didn't think Tim Burton was gross then I'd probably fap to the Candy Spooky Theater too.

And 2939529590250929529540969200932394267240952 other kote-kei songs. That's probably why I like them so much.

Is there a certain aspect to songs that cause you to like them instantaneously?

Mine aren't too atypical or outlandish...

• dirty bass lines

• post-punk that's slightly sleazy/gritty

• whale song, whether it is on its own or in the middle of a metal/rock track as I am a geek for marine biology and cetacea

• songs about or inspired by the sea in general

• synth (and sampling, especially in metal/rock), bonus points if it's bouncy, sexy, or creepy

• carnival inserts too, or circus-freak-innuendo, or death marches, dictatorial bellowing, parades, etc

• jarring lyrics, poetic lyrics

• raw vocals

• jazz, blues, funk, flamenco, unusual or unconventional instruments in metal. I'm a sucker for the "avant-garde", actually, so anything that throws a million genres into one song and makes it work gets me hot.

• a girl, her voice, and her guitar

• gregorian chanting

• cow bells, bongos, steel drums, mellotrons and tamborines

Damn right Devin Townsend @ OP.

I have a weakness for :

Vocalists that are both amazing at screaming and singing.

Acoustic passages.

Futuristic/spacey atmospheres and themes. With ridiculously incomprehensible lyrics to accompany it.

Neo-folk generally always manages to be brilliant.

SWEEPING ARPEGGIOS.

Xylophones.

Anything Devin Townsend ever thinks of in that magnificent brain of his.

Ohhh, I forgot to mention harpsichord / clavichord.

What is a mellotron?

The Mellotron is an electro-mechanical, polyphonic keyboard. Opeth loves using this instrument. They even put out an alternate version of their single "Porcelain Heart" that is performed on mellotron and mini-Moog synthesizers and called it "Mellotron Heart".

- Chugging guitar riffs (the new OBSCURE was delicious)

- Strophic form in metal

- Muffled chanting

- Chirping birds

- Echoing piano keys (best example I can think of are those found on

, beautiful)

- When that effect where music travels from one head/earphone to the other adds to the song's already great atmosphere (e.g.

• raw vocals

• a girl, her voice, and her guitar

These! I'd also like to add:

jazz...seriously, I can enjoy most jazz with ease.

female vocals + dreamy/ethereal electronic/IDM = guaranteed love

lush acoustic guitar work

mathy, jazzy, technical, intricate, or interesting time signatures and guitar riffs

soulful vocals

funky/bluesy vocals and/or guitar work

glitchy electronica!

"Chunky" noisy, chaotic music with lo fi production values

Generic, catchy melodic hardcore with boy-band esque vocal harmonies

Generic, anthemic arena rock (plus ballads)

High range/pitched 80's heavy metal vocals

Any metal or rock genre with "melodic" in the name, really

Cross-over punk/metal genres (thrashcore especially)

Twinkly post-rock guitars

Crazy effect pedals

Ambience

Extremely right or left political themes

Old school punk singers with heavy English accents

Soft, clear Japanese male indie rock vocals

Also add:

Women with deep androgynous voices

"Grungy" modern hard rock vocals (like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam kind of singing)

-soft, usually higher pitched male vocals

-soulful female vocals

-interesting, complex rhythms in catchy/accessible music

-neo classical, pseudo "gothic" / VK stuff

-also the carnival thing

-bossa nova guitar

-melodic, speedy, arpeggio-y riffs

-"full" sounding drums

-super high production value orchestration

-spacey synths

-piano as an intricate background instrument, not just chords (see: foxy shazam/ strawberry song orchestra)

-shibuya kei

-gang vocals

-chaotic/grating, yet highly listenable (a la The Piass)

fun topic!

So, I'm not as tired as yesterday so I thought I'd give this a try. Things I've got a really weak spot for is among other things:

Repetive depressive music such as Mortualia and Jammerskrik. I'm not a emo or a really depressive person or anything, but I really love depressive music and especially bands that's really repetive and just put you in some kind of a trance.

Dream-like music that has the ability to just send me to aother word. Prime examples of this would be Summoning - Oath Bound and Alcest, Aurora and a lot of Blissrock/Dreamgaze

Dream-like vocals such as Neige of Alcest, the one from Aurora or that can be found on a lot of Blissrock/Dreamgaze albums.

Chaotic Noise Rock such as Melt-Banana.

Chaotic, low-fi Hardcore and Crust with a lot of noise in the sound.

Neo-Crust. This I ahve a really weak spot for. Ekkaika, Tragedy, From Ashes Rise etc. I just love this sound.

Cowbells. That's right, you read cowbells. I think more bands shuch use cowbells, especially harder bands. Vreid (Black Metal) and Down (Southern Metal) are both bands that has used it.

Koto and other trad. instruments from all around the world.

Real, acoustic drum sound WITHOUT triggers, plastic sound and such.

I am a really fan of productions that doesn't sound too clean and computerized. Too many bands have crystal clean productions that take away all the feeling I can find in the music. But I like when it's not too "perfect".

That's all for today. Weird, I know.

- (dirty metal/rock/punk music with a) bass-heavy sound

- anything that has theremin in it

- crazy screaming/growling

- overall catchy songs that aren't too sunshine-happy

- electronic-influenced poppy music with a super-artificial sound

- any rock/metal music with crunchy/dirty/earthy sound

-Female Vocals in general

-Actual singing as opposed to screaming and other types of vocals. Especially if the voice is powerful or the person really sings out/passionate (but none of that over-vibrato stuff blargh).

-Bass (even though I didn't enjoy playing it I love being able to hear it in a song or even if it's the main focal point)

-Cello (strings in general but I have a cello bias...oh but not the synth-y stuff, hate that, I mean actual orchestra)

-Big Band/ Swing/ jazz when used properly

-When traditional instruments are used in more modern musical settings

-Theremin

-Chanting

-Talking, especially in heavy-ish songs.

-Music with a story behind it...like concept albums or when the songs are connected to each other in some way.

-Poetic Lyrics/ word play in lyrics/ keeping with above if they're apart of some kind of theme or story (I do feel as though it ads something to the music even if it isn't music per se)

- Electronic fused with rock (in the avengers in sci-fi, mow mow, A9-rainbows kind of way, not as much in the crabcore, or industrial kind of ways)

-Lush sounds/ high-atmosphere/ anything that really envelopes you...typically in instrumental music

-I tend to like melancholic stuff or stuff that borders the line between happiness and sadness/anger in tone and feeling, not too much into the extremes except occasionally.

- A good catchy melody, something that I can sing along to for days to come and annoy the family with

- Most things that fall under the Prog category

- Controlled chaos

Could probably go on...

- (neo)folky stuff

- Accordeons

- other unusual instruments mixed in

- weird languages

- melancholic/dreamy/atmospheric stuff

- heavy stuff that still retains a certain amount of melody

- music that conveys some sort of dramatic atmosphere

- music that mixes more than one typical "genre"

and

- cheesy lyrics (sometimes XD)

And more, but that's all I can think of now.

Koto and other trad. instruments from all around the world.

Speaking of traditional instruments, I like the shamisen and the sanshin (those banjo-like Japanese instruments), however...

I'm an ABSOLUTE SUCKER for the Kokyū! One of my favorite instruments ever >_>

EINS ZWEI DREI VIER

Gregorian/general religious chanting

- Production that makes the music sound like air conditioning

- Relentlessly tight production

- The fact that it's not Melodic Death metal from Sweden

- Acoustic interludes

- Great use of orchestration like on Sigh's Hail Horror Hail album for example. Well all of their albums manage to do that well.
