I went with what albums I think are the best VK albums, not necessary my personal favorites.

  1. Amphibian - DOPPELGÄNGER (1993)
  2. L'arc~en~Ciel - Heavenly (1995)
  3. GLAY - pure soul (1998)
  4. Dir en grey - Gauze (1999)
  5. Luna Sea - Mother (1994)

If I went with my personal favorites, it would more or less look like this:

  1. Aura - THESAURAS (1990)
  2. Color - 激突!! (1989)
  3. BAISER - 華 (1999)
  4. BY-SEXUAL - Culture Shock (1990)
  5. Decameron - 名曲アルバム (1990)

1. Malice Mizer - Merveilles

2. Cali Gari - Dai 5 Jikkenshitsu

3. L'arc-en-Ciel - Ark

4. hide - Ja, Zoo

5. Strawberry Fields - Charme

Diru would've made my list, but there's a three-way tie of their albums, and I don't want my top 5 list to be consisting of three Diru albums XD.

Damn, I had ruminate on this for a good hour... This would be my selection if I was forced to bring only 5 vk jewel cases on a long road trip. In fact, all of the ones listed below have been on my road trip rotation. I couldn't choose 5 actual "top" albums, so I went for densely packed albums/best-ofs w/ my favorites. There were artists like xTRiPx, ViViD, and クラビア (Clavier) missing b/c my favorite tracks were too scattered to include a single album.

Main Set:

  1. パノラマ虚構ゼノン - XENON BEST SELECTION
  2. キャンセル (Canzel) - BeST SONGS -SOFT TRACKS-
  3.  ダウナー (DOWNER) - セットリスト
  4. Royz - Revolution to New AGE
  5. the Raid. - 【bo_ya SIDE】COUPLING BEST

*6 really close runner-ups (possible switch-outs):

  1. NEXX - cap:cell
  2. girugamesh - MUSIC
  3. Janne Da Arc - SINGLES 2
  4. MoNoLith- MONOLITH
  5. vistlip - THEATER
  6. #ロストワールド(Lost World) - 幻想世界地図

Dir en grey - UROBOROS
黒夢 - 亡骸を・・・
LUNA SEA - LUNA SEA
ムック - 葬ラ謳
sukekiyo - ADORATIO

Any answer that is not involving these five is most likely incorrect.

I feel like my answer to this is quite consistently changing, but my "constants" are probably...

deadman - in the direction of sunrise and night light

Dir en grey - MACABRE

Plastic Tree - toroimerai

MALICE MIZER - merveilles

PIERROT - HEAVEN ~the customized landscape~

I kind of confined myself to everything I consider to be a "classic" as delving into newer stuff might shake up my list a bit. All of these probably swap places with other albums in their respective discographies, too.

Funny that you say Macabre is your fav. It’s literally hated by many DEG fans, but I love Macabre so yeah XD

In no particular order and also in general definitely subject to some changes the more I think about it

Aliene Mariage - Les soiree

Madeth Gray’ll - compilation album

Dir en grey - Macabre

Kuroyume - Nagikara wo...

Luna Sea - Image/Luna Sea depending on the day

lots of album and bands bubbling under. A comprehensive top 20 is a task I’ve been meaning to get to forever

at the moment:

01 Kagerou - Kagerou

02 Duel Jewel - Luminous

03 Nightmare - Varuna

04 The Black Swan - OUSIA

05 Penicillin - Missing Link

which is not accurate bc. most of stuff I actually listen to are non-album b-sides and mini/EPs, and my developing gag reflex over anything Dir en grey-adjacent has hit a peak, otherwise vulgar should be #1 or smth.

I love it! It's the first DEG album I ever purchased and I think it's a really interesting follow-up to GAUZE. GAUZE is a fairly straightforward album that's chock full of classics and they could have repeated that formula, but instead put out something that I feel "pushed the envelope" a bit at the time. Hardly experimental, but very tonally different and I think a more defining album when put in the context of the band they became.

Les soiree is sitting right on the edge of my list and the Madeth Gray'll compilation only stayed away because I have a weird thing about "compilations" but damn if they aren't both absolute undeniable classics. I mean really, Les soiree itself is so completely unmatched in style and atmosphere.

In no particular order:

Dir en grey - Kisou

Luna Sea - Mother/Period(compilation album, depends on mood)

Malice Mizer - voyage sans retour

The Piass - Piass

Alice Nine - Alpha(one of the first albums i ever bought, special place in my kokoro)

And alot of others are one-off singles or mini albums.

I remember listening to Macabre right after Gauze when I first started listening to Diru and I was really just confused. Like I didn't like it but it wasn't bad either. It was my least fav album for a while until I listened to it to it again and now I consider it Dir En Grey's most unappreciated works. The Marrow Of A Bone is now my least fav album XD
