[Lyrics] baroque - sug life (album) kanji/romaji/english

Recommended Posts

Took me long enough to start translating their lyrics. Ryo's lyrics are quite well known for being cryptic, or better yet, maybe even senseless. If you've seen some of the English (or even attempted reading/translating his lyrics) you're probably wondering what the heck this dude is talking about, as I have. Some lyrics have more clarity, but some make almost no sense at all. Years ago I even once asked someone to translate Gariron for me and all I got back was how fucking stoned they were while writing the song looool. So please excuse some of my translations if they sound bad or weird. they were originally bad

Well, despite saying all that, there is a beauty in some of Ryo's lyrical writing, so I hope fans of them will still enjoy these translations! ^^

I will update this post until I'm done translating all of them.

キミの キミの 方に
手を伸ばす 匂い

懐かしむ 香り

キミの キミの そばに

キミと キミの 間に
意味のない 距離
七色の 空に
懐かしむ 香り

キミと キミの そばに
何気ない 今日

English:
To and to your side
A hand-reaching scent
On the green-colored[1] hill
A nostalgic fagrance

By and by your side
On neighboring sofas
On a charming, charming hill
The sweet fagrance of seasons

Time and time with you
A meaningless distance
In the sky of seven colors
A nostalgic fagrance

By and by your side
A relaxing day
On a charming, charming hill
The sweet fagrance of seasons

*Come, a train waits for you
The journey moves on aimlessly
Yes, a train that waits for tomorrow
A running, and running rhythm

**Come, a train waits for you
The journey moves on without seeing the beyond
Yes, a train that waits for tomorrow
A vibrating, and running rhythm

In a field of blooming greens
A nostalgic fragrance
To and to your side
A person chimes in their voice

In a charming, charming field
The sweet fragrance of seasons
Thoughts and thoughts of you
Like a clock that stops

*repeat

**repeat

Come, a train waits for you
Each time you hide a stirring mind
Yes, a train that waits for tomorrow
Cycling a day, the sun sinks

Come, a train waits for you
A journey that moves on aimlessly
Yes, a train that waits for tomorrow
The sun sinks, a running rhythm

Notes:
For some reason all the lines in the booklet were very unorganized, so I rearranged them so that they'd follow the song, as it should.
KIMI is written in katakana(キミ), meaning that the word can have various meanings due to the lack of kanji. My initial thought was that the word can be translated as 'you' from the kanji 君, which is what I did, but other meanings show that it can also be translated as 'sensation/feeling' from the kanji 気味. Both meanings fit well into the context in my opinion, and I think it was Ryo's intention to imply these two meanings, with the more obvious one being 'you'.
[1] Translated from 菜々色(nanairo), which literally means the 'color of greens/vegetables'. (note: the kanji is written differently from the word meaning 'seven colors')

3. ガリロン/Gariron

4. 歪/Ibitsu

5. rump

6. ヒトのイロ/Hito no iro

Spoiler

Kanji: ヒトのイロ
点 剥が ヒトのイロ
点 混ざす イロのヒト
点 刻む 方へ

ただ ワンダーカラー 中で
泡 アンダーカラー 奏でた

ただ ワンダーカラー ひろげて
泡 アンダーカラー 奏でる

Romaji: Hito no iro
ten haku ga hito no iro
ten mazasu iro no hito
ten kizamu hou e

tada WANDA- KARA- naka de
awa ANDA- KARA- kanadeta

tada WANDA- KARA- hirogete
awa ANDA- KARA kanaderu

English: Color of People
Point,[1] discoloration is the color of people
Point, mix colorful people
Point, to a carve

Only within wonder color
Foams from under color had danced

Only when wonder color spreads
Foams from under color will dance
-----------------------
Notes:
[1] 'Point' as in listing several points. The original Japanese word I translated it from, 点(ten), can have various meanings too (e.g. dot, mark), but the way Ryo wrote them down like a list I figured he was talking about several 'points' so I translated it as that.

English: exit
On a floating boat
My placed on fingertips do nothing but sink
In the seizing cloud
Approaching at the bottom of the stairs, I am cut off alone
Being forgotten and sent away

To a halting sound
My placed on fingertips sway in ripples
A deep sleep
Sinking in the dark sea, to the dancing stars

Peering into
A wall, if you put a stain there, look
It’s faint
Form the sky[1]
Into shapes, into a box buried at the bottom
Being forgotten and sent away

Softly
In a boat full of letters

Softly
Floating in the sea, gently in waves

Softly
Escaping from here[2] alone

Please
Hold me in

Softly
Crying to a new star

Softly
I gaze alone

Softly
The clouds sway, to a drop of color

Softly
The light that falls from the sky husk

Please
Paint it over me

Softly
Fainting[3] in the unnoticeable darkness

Softly
-----------------------------
Notes:
[1] Ryo sings そら/sora(sky), however it is written as 宇宙/uchuu(universe) in the lyrics.
[2] Ryo sings ここ/koko(here), however it is written as 地球/chikyuu(earth) in the lyrics.
[3] The word I translated this from is クラリ/kurari, which I couldn't find the definition for. I think Ryo might have created this word to poetically rhyme with other words used in the lyrics like ポロリ/porori(crying/tears dripping) and フワリ/fuwari(gently). Since クラリ/kurari sounds pretty close to the word クラ/kura(sfx for dizzy) and 眩み/kurami(to be dazzled/dizzied) I decided to interpret it as "fainting", which is a little different, but it sounds more poetic and aligns better with Ryo's lyrical writing.

Like the uneven timing gears
Sounds of a passing feeling

Sounds of everyone laughing
Sounds of baby birds chirping

A soft flowing melody

Yelling sounds

Sounds of a passing feeling

Sounds of a seeing mind
Sounds of obstructing clouds
If you visit with timing, your mind opens
See, it's a flowing melody

freaking awesome, thanks for this!

the way Ryo writes gives me some serious Haikai feels, I don't know if you are familiar with it. It's a kind of short poetry, usually in three or four sentences, that vividly describes sounds, colors, weather, nature...  Not so much structurally, but the way he describes things makes them sound so real, so haikai-ish.

Really, great post! looking forward to more of it!

and no, i'm not familiar with haikai. but to be compared with that kind of poetic form (which i'm guessing was practiced by scholars) really describes his skill of lyrical writing. it's always interesting to see how other people interpret his lyrics so thanks for sharing~ ^^

Thanks so much for this post ^^ this album is a masterpiece, I am also very happy to see that it's being translated. I really appreciated exit lyrics, it's an epic song and the lyric is very poetic, I agree Ryo is a bit hard to understand but there is deep meaning and it always rhymes beautifully when he sings ❤️

you're welcome! and yeah, i have a feeling that there is a much deeper meaning to exit as seeing him nearly crying while singing it in their last live dvd just broke my heart.

i absolutely adore sound of respire and love it more for the lyrics. it's rather uplifting but cherishes the essence of living and the little things that make people happy. at least that's my interpretation. i like that ryou's lyrics aren't all typically edgy or about some breakup, which is nice to see once in a while.

man, it's been a year since i last translated from this album but i really hope to find some time to pick it up again~!!! ><
