Black Veil Brides: Back when I thought Metalcore and Emo were the same. (Surprisingly, they're not, they're quite different in origin, but that's another topic for another time) I still like Metalcore and Emo, but not BVB, they've grown generic for me. 

 

Wagakki Band: I used to be all over this band, fangirling and such.. then I realise there are way better, more creative bands out there, and Wagakki was making it harder for them to get popular with their surge in popularity. (Kiryu's most popular song is still Etsu To Utsu, surprisingly) and then I found out they had little creative freedom and were overcommercialised.  Also, I began getting into their Taiko Drummer's old band, CrowXClass, which I found more creative, and kind of made me mad at Wagakki even more because CrowXClass practically disappeared due to Wagakki. Also, I got tired of their fanbase acting like Wagakki was the first Japanese Folk Metal band, and acting like they were so original, and pretending their covers of Vocaloid songs were the originals written by Yuko herself. 

 

DIV: Same with BVB. They grew generic for me. 

 

Exist Trace: They also grew generic for me. But Judea will always be an awesome song. 

 

Slipknot: I just grew out of them (Though I still love Psychosocial)

 

UNiTE: I used to like them back when I was just getting into Vkei, and I had the "bright" idea to listen to mostly Danger Crue bands, not knowing there was more. Then I found the heavier Tokyo Vkei bands and grew out of UNiTE

Bullet for My Valentine - "The Poison" is very very very very average. but as child i loved it. The other albums are bad.

Linkin Park - Yea, I remember how I heard the first two albums up and down as a child. 

 

Purple Stone - I dont know. Somehow I dont like them anymore like a few years ago.

Rammstein - Uhhh, german music. The only Song i liked as child was "Sonne" but now In my opinion the songs sounds all like the same and the lyrics are uninspired.

MEJIBRAY.

 

They used to bee cool, different and had a interesting concept... Before year 2015. After that they slowly started to repeat themselves and also their visual style changed a lot. I was waiting for their hiatus/disbandment for a year.

I'm not actually sure if I still like them, but I just slowly lost my interest after they seemed to be not that active after year 2008.

Kagrra (disbanded) - went through an obsession with them, but now when I go back for the nostalgia, it's just not there for me anymore. If you've never heard them before, at least give a listen because they actually are really good musicians.  

SID - I know they are still cranking out the good tunes, but I'm just not feeling them anymore. I don't even look at them for nostalgia.

Ayabie - They started their decline when Ryohei left and then they were basically dead to me after Aoi was gone.

Metis Gretel - really have NO idea why I was so obsessed with them. lol

Exist Trace - WTF. Like the ONLY VK girl group really killing it and then you went completely left....argh.

----ALL J-POP music----WTF HAPPEN. It all sounds soooo generic and boring now.

 

Outside Japan:

Linkin Park - After album 2...I don't even know what happened there...

Incubus - I'm so sad because they were the band who actually made me like rock music. They've gotten really mediocre and mellow lately.

AFI - same thing as Incubus.

Busta Rhymes - Afte E.L.E., I wasn't feeling him anymore.

Yeah, same for me on Eliott Smith. Like him in high school, find that shit incredibly embarrassing as an adult.

 

Same goes for The Smiths. I was a hardcore fan when I was younger, CANNOT STAND that stuff now. I like a new Moz solo tunes still, but I'm just not miserable enough to listen to The Smiths anymore.

 

I can't listen to L'arc~en~Ciel's 'Heavenly' anymore. I like other records, but that one bores me to tears now.

Wagakki Band: I had hopes for their success seen as how talented were they in interpreting vocaloid chunez to "click" with more ordinary mensch. Even so, they haven't really moved anywhere and their original catalogue is not far off from what they were as a cover band. Try to guess the endgame.

 

Lareine: oh my, Carm stopped liking BONJOUR HONEY?! Okay, no one gives a flying fuck - well me neither, nor does my ear close in for previous fav jams off their first major album. Once you learn to realize that it all falls down for being nothing short of weak, cosplay carbon French pop - except in Nihongo - you will drop off quickly once you get to know more dedicated chaps of this art and practice. 

 

Seiko Oomori: she was dying out very quickly as a funny meme - think of bad imageboard memes that last for a few threads only.

 

Wednesday Campanella: these aped jersey beats won't drive focusing listeners any closer tbqh - the prime definition of "I am a Coachella fanboy and I listen to Japanese quality stuff, here take a listen"- mediocrity.

 

Grimes: she was dying out very quickly as a (funny) meme [2]

In overall, whether non-Japanese or something I can understand:

 

Most of US-based hip hop acts circa late 2000s /2010s: Excuse me and my straightforward confessions but there's a fucking limit for every case of N-bombing replacing notions of legit expressionism (we all recognize white newbie Kendrick/Migos fans being exposed to such material avec conflicted thoughts on how to relate etc.).  It's not like you are hearing "white music" pioneers or current bandwagoners screaming their lungs out about crackers being filthy rich, ffs. Very rude opinion, yes, but had to say it anyway because music has been connected to any possible -ism and your mother just for the sake of more explicit bandwagoning, and not about enjoying art and practice as it is.

 

Neue Deutsche Härte: "toxic masculinity" is something I loathe as a manmade concept by tumblristas attempting to exploit joys of art but these guys jamming in aforementioned scene these days are doing damn good job in proving things otherwise. So fucking tacky, ugh.

I used to be all over L'Arc en Ciel and Vamps... but now I seriously don't care much for their releases.

 

Bust be all the times L'Arc broke our hearts with all their teasing, and their cancelled concert in Chile because Tetsu though we weren't worth it.

 

I still think their music is really good, I just don't feel that thrill anymore and it didn't even take a bad release from them for it to happen, just their general attitude towards the band that killed it for me and lots of other fans I've discussed L'Arc with lately :/

I have another one. Matenrou Opera. I wouldn't say I completely stopped liking them, but they used to be one of my favorite and now I hardly can get through their releases. Sono's voice started to get annoying with his overdone vibrato able to destroy kidney stones and  music got repetitive to the point one album sounds to me like one pretty long and boring song. I still listen to them from time to time, but I stick mostly to the older stuff.

Versailles. I don't dislike them or anything. I saw them at A-Kon in 2008 and I had to take a plane to get there because it was really far away. I didn't really follow them closely after Jasmine You died. I don't know why because it's not like the music changed. I'd still see Versailles live if they were within a few hours of me, but they're no longer a band where I'd be like BETTER BOOK MY FLIGHT if they were playing too far away from me. 

 

Also, I was really into D when I first got into visual kei and now I can't remember the last time I listened to them. It's probably been a few years.

ELYSION - I stanned them mainly because they were a Megaromania-copycat band. However, their production and Bidoh's voice wasn't as impressive as their compositions. Basically after Shuuen no Campanella, they were starting to become a trainwreck, and their album is a tragic example of wasted potential. The production of APOTHEOSIS was just as bad, if not worse, than the original War of the Dead Paradise and the collab single with Labaiser.

 

Megaromania (after 2010) - It's weird saying this because Megaromania was actually my first vk band. I got into them pretty late, around late 2012 or so, and that was when Propaganda and Heaven's Novel were released. I decided to check out the rest of their discography, and after years of revisiting their music, I found that I preferred their earlier stuff compared to their style change after their short 2010 hiatus. When they first formed, they still had that Metis Gretel vibe, but added a tinge of metal into it. However, after Leda left, they became a complete power-metal band (like Versailles) and abandoned their old-school aesthetic, and I haven't really been into much of their music during that period. I remember Artistical Glint being totally bland compared to the masterpiece that was Prophetic Faction; listening to those albums side-by-side, you'd think they were two different bands. However, the last two concept singles were the perfect closing curtain for them as they had done all they could do; sometimes it's better to break up after 5 years, than continue on for 5 more years of mediocrity.

From Japan:

人格ラヂオ:  Thier first releases were great...but most of the stuff they did after their comeback is pretty mediocre being generous.

Roach: Pretty much the same feeling as with 人格ラヂオ, but with them is a bit worse as they seem to "deny/forget" their first works.

 

Western bands, many of them...and always for the same reaons, the most notorious examples:

30 seconds to mars: Such a great first CD, and then...

Sugar Ray: really, wth happened with them...

Incubus: The pretty much became an elevator music band

Tweener-me stanned this band so hard when A Beautiful Lie came out, but when they basically sold out starting with their third album with making mainstream ~revolution rock~ and venturing onto Maroon 5-tier pop music, I stopped listening to them altogether. It also didn't help that Jared Leto was becoming more of a celebrity and letting the fame get into his head. :/ Such a shame...

lol I went through this with Plastic Tree. Hardcore adored them for a few years (I presented on them back when I was a high schooler for a music class), then just... stopped. I think it was mostly just the newer music they were putting out. Then I started listening to them again in the past year and fell back in love with them.

 

Gackt's not a band but I mean I used to love him and then woke up one day like "lol nah". I try to forget that ever happened. Funnily enough one of my university classmates who I had no idea knew any Japanese music went through the same phase. If Instagram would stop frickin' trying to get me to follow him though..

 

Anything related to oshare kei. 

 

Frickin' Sekai no Owari but honestly I don't think I ever liked them for even a hot second. I can't remember. I've just always sort of despised their music and Fukase.

 

GESU NO KIWAMI OTOME. Ahhhrjihyijjk. K, actually I still love this band but I try so hard to avoid anything Enon touches. But. It's. So. HARD. I hatehatehate him with a burning passion but ffs how come he is so talented? I prefer indigo la End over Gesu anyday but.. ahh. Then Dadaray came out and I was like "damn this is some good- frickity frack no way no no no". I can be super extra with my hate for Enon tho.

I have that feeling with A Beautiful Lie :grin: I remember pre-ordering their selftitled album after just downloading the Capricorn video from one of the  music video rippings groups in IRC (there was no YT at that time), didnt even know Jared Leto was involved and then...they become very generic

Not Japanese and my reasoning is a little weird but Blue October. I don't hate them or anything but, as someone with a mental illness, I was always able to relate to Justin's lyrics (and adored Ryan's violin skills). I was very emotionally invested in them. When Approaching Normal came out, it was a generally positive album that made me so happy that things were finally working out for Justin and he was getting better. I had also come out the other side with therapy and counseling. Then everything went wrong and he got divorced, lost custody of his daughter and the next album was bitter and angry. I can understand why but I just couldn't appreciate it. I wasn't in that headspace and I was sad that he lost that peace he had found. I still love the old stuff but the new stuff is too difficult for me to listen to.

I would split a list into three categories:

Russian bands from the Emo-period:
- Stigmata (maaaan, their song 'Крылья' / 'Wings' is like a symbol of that period)

- Amatory ('Черно-белые дни' / 'Black and white days' from 2004 shaped the entire music industry in Russia)

- Origami ('Без лишних слов' / 'Without unnecessary words' is another one)

- Jane Air ('Junk' is the song that preceeded all of the aforementioned bands, it was the first famous song from that period)

- FeedYourDad (especially their early stuff, one of the most underrated bands in the recent history of Russian heavy music)

- Soularis, Radia Cambodia, Medusa Scream, Океан моей надежды, and more less-known bands.

 

I would put it this way - 2004-2008 were absolutely unique years for Russia, especially with the whole Emo movement. Whenever I talk to people from US or almost any European country, I feel that emo movement was just a movement in these countries (that's the impression that I get, sure we all were rebellious and such, but it just doesn't feel like there was something more to it), whereas in Russia it was an era, a symbol. I guess it has something to do with the things that were happening there during that time, us being born in 90s (horrible times for Russia), and just cultural things. 

The bands that I mentioned above are the ones that were symbols of that era. Once this era ended, most of them just quitely disappeared or lost almost all the following that they had.

 

I still listen to these bands once or twice a year because of nostalgy, but nothing more.

 

Nevertheless, I would recommend you to try out first four bands and their songs that I mentioned from the list, you will be able to feel the Russian culture from there =D

 

Western Bands:

Nightwish, Rammstein, Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Burzum, iwrestledabearonce (especially 'tastes like kevin bacon', one the most insane things I ever heard), MyChildren MyBride (my favourite is 'King Of The Hopeless'). All of black metal, all of death metal, all of grindcore, all of depressive black metal. All of it got boring to me.

 

J-rock:

- Versailles (I used to be a huge fan of them for several years, but symphonic metal just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Still like them, tho)

- Nega/Perestroika (still listen to them occasionally)

- X-Japan (well, thank you, Yoshiki)

- Jeniva/Matenrou Opera (I stopped listening to them, I like them, but don't have any of their songs)

- Megaromania (I was digging their Aurora release, but just stopped liking Sou's voice)

- Blu-BIllion, Jakura (well, they are boring and I was blind)

- Sads and Kuroyume (don't dig anymore)

- Diaura (oh, man, I found them when they began and I loved them all the way till 2013. After that summer I stopped liking their new releases)

- Miyavi (booooooooring)

- An Cafe (still occasionally listen to them).

I tend to fall for scenes and when they go stale I lose interest. In the 90s I went crazy for industrial. Then KMFDM broke up and I drifted away. I got into Swedish melodeath for a while but In Flames went to shit and Soilwork got boring. So I moved on to symphonic metal. Eventually I grew bored with Nightwish, and the last album wasn't that good.

 

I discovered Japanese metal by accident. I was reading a Japanese pop culture site called Arama Japan and they had a list on the new Oricon chart releases, which was alphabetical, and Aldious were releasing "District Zero" that week and at the top of the list, so there was an accompanying picture. Well if you remember the DZ era, they looked hot as fucking hell. So that got my attention. Then the dominoes fell and I discovered MtH, Galneryus, and all the girl bands like Destrose, Cyntia, Mary's Blood and Gacharic Spin.

 

I expect in a few more years I will grow bored with JMetal, too. I've soured on Aldious because I don't like the new direction under Re:no and Cyntia let me down. The Japanese don't make it easy to be a fan -- a general lack of interest or support for fans out Japan with a few exceptions, the lack of English and translations, some labels not allowing their videos to be seen (a big fuck you to Victor), lack of iTunes releases, and the live DVD release bullshit (regular edition DVDs of live concerts often have songs cut out. If you want the full concert you have to buy the deluxe edition that costs 2x. Happened twice with GS). Eventually I'm going to get sick of having to try so hard to be a fan.

At one point I thought NoGod was the best thing to happen to VK in years. Then around the time V came out everything started to sound the same and I stopped listening. I check in once in a while and see that nothing has changed.
