Japanese covers for non-Japanese songs

Recommended Posts

I haven't heard a lot of non-Japanese songs covered by Japanese artists so I thought it would be an interesting topic.

Personally I've only heard a few.

Acid Black Cherry: – ラストダンスは私に

I don't have a link for Yasu's version but you might've heard it. The original is "Save the last dance for me" by the Drifters.

Atsushi Sakurai: Made a cover of "I like Chopin" by Gazebo-

Atsushi's version - Ameon wa Chopin no shirabe ~I Like Chopin~

That's all what I can think of off the top of my head. I'd love to hear if there's anything else that you know of.

Look around for Avril Lavigne and Metallica tribute albums Metal-Ikka and Tribute to Avril Lavigne ~Master's Collection~ , also Punk Goes Pop especially volume 5 that has a full japanese edition cd . Here are some selected songs from those albums .

They did and awesome cover of "Enter Sandman"

Also the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra does some covers , one of their best was for The Godfather song .

Maniac by Plasticzooms

If you ask me , this is better than the original .

Ok it's my turn :)

One Ok Rock - Smells like teen Spirit (Nirvana cover)

MiD Deracine - Sombre Dimanche (Rezső Seress cover) ---> it's very good

Fest Vainqueur - I don't want to miss a thing (Aerosmith cover)

Vamps - Life on Mars? (David Bowie cover) and Trouble (Shampoo cover)

And that's all at the moment... I will edit if something else comes to my mind :)

Plasticzooms ft Alina - Crash (The Primitives cover)

O yeah i forgot that there was also a Nirvana Tribute album .

Japanese Ska Punk and Pop Punk bands also do a lot of covers . Here are some examples .

The band that from what i remember did the most amount of covers would be Nicotine , especially known for two albums , one was punk rock covers of xmas songs , the other one was the punk rock beetles covers .

Here is "Let it Be" covered by Nicotine

And Wham's "Last Christmas" by Nicotine

Hitomi Yaida covered Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car". Bonus points because she actually translated the lyrics into Japanese.

Original:

immi covered The Cure's "Lovesong"

Takeshi Hosomi does a lot of live acoustic covers on his radio show. I liked the one he did of Weezer's "No One Else" the best, even though he botched the lyrics pretty bad.

Jimmy Eat World's "May Angels Lead You In" from a different day:

Kazuhiro Momo from MO'SOME TONEBENDER did a cute version of Johnny Thunders' "Sad Vacation" on his first solo album

Balzac covered The Damned's "Smash It Up" for a tribute album

Apologies! I somehow missed it. orz

No problem there . Also some info just for ppl who would look around for the tracks you posted , i dont know if you can find Crossfatih's "Omen" on Punk Goes Pop cds , never saw it there it was on their 2nd album , Silhouette from the Skylit "California Gurls" i think it was one of the Punk goes Pop cds but i dont know wich one and dont know if its possible to get japanese edition , but it was also on their first album Arche . Just thought i point this out cause you posted them as Punk Goes Pop .

Also here is the crossfade preview of all the songs from PUNK GOES 90'S Vol.2 - JAPAN EDITION

Best tracks are Nookie , Guerrilla Radio , Pretty Fly (just cause its Her Name in Blood who do the cover) and Arounf The World , honorable mention for I dont want to miss a thing and Falling away from me .

Sigh's covered lots of covers of Venom (made two cover EPs), as well as one live album where 6 of the 14 songs are Venom cover and 2 are Death covers. The Scorn Defeat 20th Anniversary Gig album also got some Venom and Death cover songs. They've also got some Venom covers on a couple of their other splits and EPs. And one Necrophagia cover on the split with Necrophagia . And on the original vinyl version of Scorn Defeat they included one Venom and one Mayhem cover.

Could've mentioned a shitload of metal bands here as doing covers are very usual.

Omen was on the Japanese Edition of Pop Goes Punk 3 originally. And you can still buy it at HMV.

Maybe I was wrong about Silhouette's Katy Perry cover because I can't find which PGP it's on now,  you're right about it being on their Arche album, tho. I could have sworn I saw it on a VA... *shrug*

I know, but  I think that counts too.

Here's Asian Kung-Fu Generation covering Beck. I kinda like this actually :)

I wonder why all this Nirvana & Bowie fascination.
