ANIME TRASH TALK THREAD

I am quite sure I am about to offend @YuyoDrift with this, but I absolutely loathed FLCL. If one anime was ever the cause for anxiety attacks due to sensory overload, it would be this one. What a nonsensical, ugly and ill-conceived piece of garbage. Whoever today still claims this to be a 'coming-of-age' masterpiece needs to straighten themselves out; there is absolutely no story, no plot and no secretive and underlying hidden meaning in this whatsoever.

man your words cut deep.

It's cool though FLCL is definitely not for everyone, I have noticed people who never seen it back in the day are more likely to not really enjoy the show from my experiences. Obviously as great deal of nostalgia comes into play as well with this show. I recently urged a friend who had never seen it to check it out in preparation for the 2nd and 3rd seasons later this year... and yeah he pretty much stopped after the second or third episodes and couldn't continue, broke my heart, but I understand what can be off putting about the series.

I still rank FLCL in my top 10 of all time shows though. It's just the perfect OVA  nothing has gotten close to the level of satisfaction and compactness and just overall quality since imo.

I just watched a mix of dub and sub episodes of "Angels of Death". The voice acting for Zack is kind of fabulous in both versions, and he's an endearing character, but the anime gets stupid after the Eddie floor, and the part where Zack cuts through iron bars and giant pieces of rubble with an ordinary scythe just because of the power of friendship or whatever made me groan.

Also, I wish I could wipe every instance of Danny calling Rachel's eyes "perfect peepers" in the dub from my memory.

A bit of my own manga trash talk:

Slave heroine deuteragonists in isekai series NEED TO STOP. I enjoy isekai  b/c of RPG mechanics, but you can't tell me you're unable to inject romance to a series w/o having a protag w/ a savior complex picking up slave chicks. Also, if you have "ero-mechanics" in any part of your series, I'm dropping it on the spot.

I'm glad there's been an increase in shoujo isekai mangaka, b/c most of them aren't hot garbage.

I hate the protagonist of Re:Zero with a burning fire. And I hate how a lot of the people defending to me say oh, that's because he's realistic. And I'm like, I still can hate realistic things when they are one of the top characters to have earned my disdain in any series. Especially when he's blind to how he's so horrible and some other characters even like him and he's depicted as the hero we should be cheering for.

This.

I'm familiar w/ the overall plot of Re:Zero, but haven't watched/read the series. However, I still think there's a fine line between a fallible character and a straight-up dunce (same could be said for a virtuous one v. a gary stu/white knight.) I'll still pick up most drama series, but certain melodramas will cause my eyes to gloss over when there's a snowball of forced stupidity, regardless of it coming from the MC or side-character(s).

It all comes down to personal preference, and realism is not always indicative of quality.

I don't watch anime anymore, but Blood Lad. It's the fucking shittiest anime I've ever had the displeasure of enduring, and I say "enduring" because other people in the room were watching it (and they watched the whole thing - so, ten episodes - over the course of a few days to a week) and I had to be in the room with them for reasons I won't disclose... which makes it sound like this is what happened to me.

cmdaVeT.gif

It's not, but it may as well have been.

Anyways, I watched it about two and a half years ago and I hate it because it's just one of those crappy fanservice anime that only serves to give you an idle fantasy for, what, a month or so before you move on to the next big-titted moeblob. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm no prude, and I think that fanservice can be funny, entertaining and sexy when done right. This anime, on the other hand, had super-OTT fanservice literally about every five minutes in each episode. The two fanservice girls were Hydra Bell, a girl who admittedly had a nice character design and the interesting ability to see faraway events by making a rectangle with her fingers, and Fuyumi Yanagi, a teenage girl with boobs bigger than her head and that was literally all she had going for her besides her voice. I think her voice actor did a nice job with her soft, naïve tone (the voice acting was actually pretty decent for the most part), and I like the animation for both of the girls... until I noticed that they were the only characters the animator seemed to make that much of an effort on. It got to the point where the anime kind of forgot what it was about halfway through and just introduced all these wacky characters with something visually gimmicky about them who otherwise served no purpose (e.g. a girl with three eyes, a dude with afro pigtails/fish-like features/a voice reminiscent of Otto from The Simpsons, etc). Also, let's not forget that horrible trope @Zeus mentioned on the first page about "I'm-miss-fanservice-look-at-me" girls suddenly being all shy and upset whenever something fanservicey happens to them, because Fuyumi had that in spades. In one episode, she agrees to dress up as a sexy bunny girl for an obligatory boxing match between Staz and Braz (yes, the guy's name is fuckin' Braz), and the next, she's right back to her sweet, unsuspecting self.

Ah, yes, that's right, I haven't explained who Staz and *snicker* Braz are, have I, now? Well, to explain who they are would mean to explain the plot, so this shouldn't take long. Basically, Staz is an otaku vampire dude who develops an interest in Fuyumi and wants to bring her back to life after she dies. Oh, yeah. Fuyumi's a ghost. Did I mention that? No? Oh, well, it doesn't matter. Oh, and Braz is his brother. They also have this little sister called Liz and she's actually pretty cool, or at least she had potential to be. She's, like, six, so they didn't spend much time on developing her because, according to the writers of this anime, breast development = character development.

Also, near the end (I forget which episode exactly, but I'll say in between episodes eight and ten), it's revealed that Hydra is in love with Staz! Oh, wow, because a character spending barely any alone time with/being completely incompatible with another character who's a bit of a dickhead then falling in love with him is an entirely believable/original trope and not at all a worn-out cliché that never made any sense to begin with!

In case you couldn't tell, I'm being sarcastic. The opening theme was pretty good and that was the best part. I spit on this anime.

Also, I'd just like to clear up that I'm not the sort of person who thinks that boobs are evil and that one flash of knocker objectifies an entire gender, but this was just too much. If fanservice gets in the way of plot, then you've made a shitty product. Also, never make a main character a fanservice character like they did with Fuyumi. Ever. Unless it's hentai or otherwise explicitly pornographic, you have no excuse.

On another note, I thought Mirai Nikki was absolutely flawless until the middle of episode twenty-three when

Spoiler

Aru died because there was nothing separating Yuki and Yuno after that and Yuno was just a shitty character, plain and simple. Also, wtf was up with all those other worlds!? Yuki and Aru should've got together then fucking murdered Yuno. In fact, they didn't even have to get together because tbh Yuki and Aru suffered from that tired cliché I mentioned earlier. Just as long as they killed Yuno, I would've been a happy lassie.

the absolute mildest of takes ever but i still dont see the appeal of basically any shounen ever, maybe something like hxh is ok but for the most part everything just seems to be just run of the mill action and power of friendship bullshit. id honestly find more entertainment from some tasteless ecchi/borderline hentai borefest where basically every mc is just some guy constantly horny but never gets to fuck

People shouldn’t watch the dubbed version in the first place.

Well, plenty of people grew up with it on Toonami/Adult Swim including myself, so you can't unring the bell.

Netflix doing a lot of offensive things, like that new Saint seiya anime i don't even want to look at anything related to it. I don't watch much anime nowadays, i've moved to japanese dorama now, but there used to be some good anime.

Isn't the series redubbed simply because it was the only way to actually get it released in English because of licensing issues and so forth? So they had to take a choice:

1) Not release it.

2) Release it without no (English) dub at all.

3) Redub it so they can have a (English) dub.

Would it really have been better if they had gone with either of the two first options?

PS: Anime dubs suck major fucking ass no matter what and are, unless you are a kid or have some kind of dyslexia, a retarded fucking way to watch anime.

You're really gonna blame Netflix for what director Yoshiharu Ashino and writer Eugene Son?

Well, I was told by many to watch Your Lie in April  because it was so great and that people cried at the end blah blah.

So I sat down to watch it.

First few episodes were great, pacing was good, and character introduction and plot were well established. I actually thought it was cool.

Thennnnnn I got to episode 6 or so and  they "shat the bed" (using references to Darling in the FranXX) with the crappiest resolve moment crap for the protagonist that I just stopped watching. It was so stupid to me what happened in those episodes leading up to the moment that I was in arguments with friends that I was not getting the message or that it was a good resolve and I was being dramatic. Oh, I got the message, but it was handled in such poor taste that the characters leave nothing to be desired, and so soon I might add that the resolve made no sense and actually, it was not even needed. I was gonna put it on hold to finish it, but from what I hear it was actually really bad from episode 10 onward by what others who've seen the show said so I'll most likely drop it since I already thought nothing more of it to continue watching.

Such a shame too because the show had promise.

And I'm pretty sure someone dies at the end like all these types of shows tend to do.

Probably a good thing I watched this alone otherwise I'd piss some people off that I didn't enjoy the show.

I think the problem with Your Lie In April (even though I love it) is that it definitely just spoils the ending. Like, you KNOW she’s gonna die because it’s set up in a way that makes it happen. I often don’t recommend YLIA to anyone because it literally spoils the ending. I love everything about it and I agree it has some issues but in the end, I enjoyed it.

Hell, I enjoyed many controversial animes lol. I’ve even considered many anime's that people hate to be some of my favourites lol

tbh your lie in april had a lot of things in it that were in extremely poor taste.  i don’t mind predictability.  that’s a non-issue for me.  but god that show was sort of gross in some aspects.  tbf, i usually end up not liking the “feels” anime.  most of them seem like extreme pandering.  but your lie in april is trash.

Is it bad that I actually got emotional at the end of YLIA. When i first watched it honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything.

I didn’t think people hated it THAT much lol

it’s ok if you liked it!  there were just a couple things about it that really put me off, is all.  and it’s a p unpopular opinion to hate it.  most people praise it to the ends of the earth.
