1. Acid Black Cherry
2. L'Arc~en~Ciel

6. Mardelas
7. Ling Toshite Shigure
8. Galneryus

Had to think real hard. Do As Infinity I think are in the Jpop department, so I didn't include them... and Buck-Tick and Luna Sea I'm never sure if they count as jrock or vk...

Making this as a sister-thread to nero's thread.

According to my last.fm:

  • 凛として時雨 (rin toshite shigure)
  • 9mm Parabellum Bullet - most of their new music is MEH AS FUCK, but I still jam to a lot of their earlier work
  • 八十八ヶ所巡礼 (88kasyo Junrei)
  • LOSTAGE
  • 緋と陽 (hitohi)
  • ATATA
  • ハイスイノナサ (haisuinonasa)
  • mudy on the 昨晩
  • オワリカラ (owarikara)
  • THE NOVEMBERS

some slight changes, but as of now and in no particular order:

  • THE NOVEMBERS
  • 凛として時雨
  • downy
  • 八十八ヶ所巡礼
  • toe
  • ハイスイノナサ
  • cinema staff
  • LOSTAGE
  • nayuta
  • akutagawa

Gacharic Spin (When Takae was vocalist)
Dollbox
Light bringer
Stereopony
Second Wall

Ozrin
Hurly Burly
Boom Boom Satellites
Mutant Monster
Knock out Monkey

Would have thought this whole "limit things to 10 bands" would be so difficult.   Anyways, there you go for what its worth. :)

9. Indigo la End

10. Shishamo

Something like that for now. I tried to make sure that they are at least counted as "rock acts".

Update:

1. Ringo Shiina + Tokyo Jihen

2. Happy End

3. Boredoms and affiliated acts (ROVO, OOIOO etc.)

4. Cornelius

5. Ling Tosite Sigure

6. Melt-Banana

7. Maaya Sakamoto (pop/rock?)

8. JUDY AND MARY

9. Sigh

10. Cinema Staff

Guess that's in order - and what a surprise, Ringo again! (to be frank her SUNNY era is not really inferior to Ling's sellout era)

I don't like to get too much into ranking or ordering bands, so I just listed them in alphanumeric order:

* This is an awkward one because it really only applies to their output up to and including  i'mperfect . Their recent output has been awful.

** This will probably be replaced with siraph if that band keeps on going in the same vein as their first EP suggests. So far the band is essentially all of the better parts of sfp minus most of the worse parts.

Not in a particular order, that would be too hard

- Age Factory (quickly becoming one of my favorite bands)

- THE NOVEMBERS

- The Birthday (even tho their more recent material is a bit stagnant, first 4 albums are so solid)

-  凛として時雨

-  Yellow Studs

-  THE BACK HORN

-  Envy

-  Lostage

- té

-  ゆらゆら帝国

Currently it would be something like this;

  • THE NOVEMBERS
  • downy
  • 凛として時雨
  • 八十八ヶ所巡礼
  • アルカラ

  • cinema staff

  • NUMBER GIRL

  • 夜の本気ダンス

  • 和楽器バンド (this counts as non-visual right?)

  • クリープハイプ

this is such a hard topic though, I left out so many other bands I'm currently enjoying the hell out of. not to mention all the singer song writers i left out since they are technically not 'bands' xD

In no particular order...

1. Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen

2. THE NOVEMBERS

3.  フレデリック (Frederick)

4. The Checkers

5. Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

6. SIM

7. Supercar

8. The Brilliant Green

9. Shishido Kavka

10. Bugy Craxone

Honestly this list was hard to make since I like most of these and a lot of other bands about the same, so I decided to go for listing up a lot of artists from different genres instead.

Recently been listening to more Lightbringer, which would probably appeal to VK fans, esp older fans that appreciate some of the neo-classic melodies of 90s VK.

Gnome

Framtid

Envy

Boris

Acid Mothers Temple

Flower Travellin' Band

Ghost

That's 12. Can think of 10-15 punk bands I'd love to have on this list, as well as psychedelic rock bands from the 60's to the early 90's. Most of them are fairly obscure outside of Japan too, even among psychedelic rock fans which is a shame because Japan really nailed this type of the music back in the days.

Do you think I'd mention a visual kei band in a thread about non-visual kei bands? :P

Evil is a black/thrash band. Released one of the best albums in 2017.

Gnome is a mid 90's black metal who only released a couple of demos and a split. Under the Black Moon features some of the best black metal ever written tbh. One man band with Masanori "Wood"of Hurusoma.

Ghost was a psychedelic/acid/folk/experimental rock band which release a shitload of albums in the 90's and up until mid 2000's.
