Onegai, I don't know if English is okay here as long as the topic concerns the locals? 

 

I'll be strolling about in these parts next month, and seeing as it is my third time in Berlin I'm intending to expand my horizons from the yuppie areas to tha projects ( Marzahn and Gropiusstadt ). I don't speak a word of German so I have a couple of concerns as to how things work around thar where expats don't make up 80% of the people.

 

I tried to look up how long the S7 runs but I couldn't make any sense of it even when I changed the site to English pfft. Apparently is possible that they start running shorter rounds later in the nights too, skipping some stations no1curr about?

 

Is it okay to wander to the yards of apartment buildings ( I've done this closer to the center but you can do that central Helsinki as well, but no so much in the periphery )? Do you have those DO NOT TRESPASS signs or anything like that 

 

And is there anything to do in Dortmund? Other than some old buildings and parks and shit that google loves, but I could hardly care less about.

theres literally nothing to see in dortmund.

 

you could go travel to dusseldorf if you have enough time before/after the concert, its not that far away and far more interesting than dortmund.

 

about the DO NOT TRESPASS. not really i would say. mostly theres also a fence if you are not allowed to enter a certain terrain. pretty sure you cant just accidently walk into forbidden grounds. and everyone gets do not enter/stop signs. you dont need german skills to see the signs.

 

about the s7. i guess i could check the website, but we also have someone from berlin here i think, so maybe that person can help more.

So you enjoy Plattenbausiedlungen? That's the first time I heard anybody ever say they want to go there.

But well, they actually are one of a kind, especially Marzahn and I'll just assume you know what you want.

S7 does go there and I'm pretty sure it should be possible until late because it's huge and lots of people live there. But I'm not 100% sure as I only ever went by day and by car and only when I was forced to.

As for Gropiusstadt... I never went there but since it's in direction of Rudow you should be able to get there 24/7 because U7 goes all night.

 

And you can usually go anywhere you like if there's no fence. When somebody complains you can still apologize. Maaaybe don't creep around houses at night, I can imagine that people there would call the police faster than elsewhere.

You may encounter signs, too. Any variety of 'Privatgrundstück' or 'Betreten verboten' means don't enter.

 

'Betreten bei Schnee und Glätte auf eigene Gefahr' is very common and simply means you are allowed to enter but you can't sue them if it's winter and you fall and die.

 

As for the English skills... old people in those areas might really not know any English because they used to teach Russian in DDR school. But most people you encounter should understand you.

Ya I love plattenbau lolol. I haven't done much block-browsing aside from a couple that were oddly enough fenceless despite being near central places. Some of the cute ones in Karl-Marx Allee had been fenced-up tho iirc  

 

You've ever been to U-bahn stations in Wedding after 7pm or so? It started getting shifty there last time even during daylight hours, but still relatively alrite. That place has been getting some food establishments that may require late hours, and walking from there to pberg or mitte is a pain in the arse. After being accosted by twice junkies and witnessing a huge brawl with bottles thrown and everything, all in the span of a couple of minutes at Moritzplatz I've started to avoid the seedy stations like the plague lol.

I don't normally go to wedding at night actually (dayum all this makes me sound like I don't know the city I've been living in for the last 20+ years) but I can imagine it to be kind of annoying having to walk around there because it's even seedy during the day.

Although -while the center parts of Berlin are all really nice and safe at night- once you enter any train station after 11pm things will get spooky no matter where you are.

In fact the more popular the area the more crazy the people.

I most frequently move around Kreuzberg, (which is where I live. Not even that far from Moritzplatz.) Neukölln, Prenzlberg, Friedrichshain and Mitte and while those are all areas with super high rent and hipsters everywhere I get harassed in public transport all the time.

 

I heard of some guy who wanted to make Marzahn a world culture heritage. I do understand the fascination, but still could never live there.

Even though I've been in dangerous situations a couple of times and all of them abroad, I dread the off-chance that the bloodthirsty locals smell the Visual-Kei, alcohol and free money in me. In Finland I don't mind this because I at least know the language and getting about is a lot more care-free for a guy anyway.

 

I like being in Kreuzberg, Friedrichschain and Neukölln the most, but I also like having my hotels fancy and in the proximity of Friedrichstrasse so I've almost always ended up spending my nights in Pberg/MItte and while the area is cute, it also not too exciting and the hipsters generally keep to themselves unless I'm looking especially dazzling that night. However when in the south or east my mind quicky goes into a "lolnope" if I even considering using the kottbusser tor u-bahn alone after hours. This time I'm definitely going to spend a night around those parts and either walk or get a cab from somewhere

For a guy there doesn't seem to be anything to worry here. (And even as a girl. While I do get catcalled and bothered a lot and hate it nothing harmful ever happened to me or anybody I know despite being out alone at night a lot.) I think some outer areas might be prone to Nazi-people but the inside feels a thousand times safer than any other large city I went to so far.

So I hope you'll enjoy your stay. And in case of free money- I'll take it.

Sehr geehrte Monochromiums,

ab Freitag ist Deutschland mein neues Zuhause (für die nächsten zehn Monate zumindest).  Als Amerikaner weiß ich überhaupt nichts über die Zollkontrolle in Deutschland... Während meines Currywurst-Jahrs habe ich vor, mindestens ein paar japanische CDs zu bestellen, also hat jemand einige Zoll-Tipps für mich?  Wie viel Zoll muss man durchschnittlich zahlen?  Kann man das Zoll eigentlich vermeiden? Und so weiter...

Im Großen und Ganzen kann man eigentlich sagen, dass es eine Glückssache ist, ob man Zoll bezahlen muss, da der Zoll nicht jedes Paket überprüft.

 

Die offizielle Zollgrenze liegt bei 23 €, aber wie gesagt, es ist einfach unterschiedlich. Ich musst auch schon bei Paketen über 100€ kein Zoll zahlen.

 

Wirkliche Tipps gibts eigentlich nicht. Zumindest nicht, wenn du Shops wie cdjapan oder brandx benutzt, die von selbst ins AUsland versenden. Bei fromjapan kann man den Betrag ja ändern und das mach ich auch immer.

Danke, stylelover.  Ehrlich gesagt erleichtert mich das ein bisschen.  Ich dachte, man muss immer bezahlen.

Wie oft denn werden die Pakete überprüft? Im Durchschnitt jedes zweite Mal oder so? Weniger?

Und ich werde in Koblenz wohnen und ich arbeite als Englischlehrassistent an einer Schule.

Ich hab die Erfahrung gemacht, dass EMS Pakete überdurchschnittlich oft geprüft werden. So jedes zweite Mal denke ich. (Aber erst in letzter Zeit. ;O;)

Bei richtig hohen Summen würde ich immer über fromjapan bestellen, den Wert bei 'charge 2' runtersetzen und fedex wählen.

Weil fedex die Pakete selbst verzollt sind die total nachlässig und prüfen auch dann nicht nach wenn auf einer Riesenkiste voll mit Neuware 20 euro wert draufsteht. (Nach meiner Erfahrung jedenfalls!)

Außerdem ist fedex ab einer gewissen gewichtsgrenze ziemlich günstig und dauert nach Deutschland nur 3 Tage.

Ich denke, dass es mehr oder weniger Zufall ist. Man kann also nicht sagen, ob du jedes zweite Mal kontrolliert wirst. Es ist eher so, dass halt z.B. ein Flugzeug mit Paketen ankommt und dann wird halt alles geröngt und bei manchen Sachen halt genauer nachgeschaut. Von daher ist bei jedem Paket die gleiche Wahrscheinlichkeit.

 

Aber ja, bei EMS ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit höher als bei Airmail zum Beispiel.

 

Bei Fedex hatte ich bis jetzt andere Erfahrungen gemacht. Es ist zwar schnell, aber ich musste bis jetzt bei jedem einzelnen Fedex Paket auch Zoll bezahlen.

Kürzlich wachte ich auf und musste zu meinem Entsetzen feststellen, ein Zombie zu sein.

Noch bin ich nicht völlig sicher, ob es etwas mit dem Mathematikstudium zu tun hat, für das ich momentan lerne.

 

Meine Katzen haben es auf meine verwesenen Zehen abgesehen.

Nicht Deutsch (Österreischisch... ja, wir sind eine eigene Spezies) und noch lebendig. Oder untot (undead, undead, undead um mal Bauhaus ikonischsten Song zu zitieren) wie es sich für einen Gossick gehört.

 

Katzen sind schon kleine Arschlöcher, nicht? Mein Kater knabbert mich auch gerne an, vor allem wenn ich meine Füße unter der Decke bewege und er glaubt, dass darunter eine leckere Beute versteckt ist.

 

Übrigens (zum alten Thema passend) finde ich den österreichischen Zoll sehr angenehm. Ich musste bisher nur einmal Zollgebühren zahlen (für einen Gegenstand, der 500$ wert war). Bei CDs hatte ich bisher nie probleme, egal welcher Versand. Ist Deutschland also so streng? Oder ist Österreich nur so nett?

Bei meiner Katze muss ich mit dem Spielen sehr aufpassen, die hat viel zu scharfe Krallen. Das tut richtig weh XD

Meine bekommen alle drei gnadenlos die Krallen gestutzt. Schlimm genug, dass das vordere Ende stachelig ist.

Außerdem will ich doch in die weichen Katzenbäuche prusten ohne den Verlust meines Augenlichts zu riskieren. (?? Oder doch 'ohne mein Augenlicht zu riskieren'? Man riskiert ja schließlich auch sein Leben, nicht seinen Tod. Oder geht beides?)

 

Ich denke, der deutsche Zoll ist besonders gemein.

Andererseits... muss man in Österreich nicht dafür mehr Steuern zahlen?

Kreative, kluge und tolle Menschen sind eben Katzenliebhaber In meiner Grafikklasse sind auch fast alle Katzenhalter. Von daher ist das ein guter Beweis und ich bin mir sicher die Wissenschaft kann meine Beobachtungen bestätigen XDD

Ich könnte nie meiner Katze die Krallen schneiden... muss das immer wen anderen machen lassen und daher sind sie auch immer lang genug um mich zu kratzen. Aber mir macht das nix aus... man härtet sich mit der Zeit ab oder so XD
lol... mein Kater mag es nicht, wenn man seinem Bauch zu nahe kommt. Er ist generell etwas "deppert" (dumm), wie man auf Wienerisch sagt.

 

Jup... Österreich soll ja angeblich laut Statistik die höchsten Steuern in der EU haben (ob ganz Europa bin ich mir nicht sicher...). Unsere Mehrwertsteuer ist auch heuer und die Sozialversicherungssteuer sowieso... ich finds teilweise sehr arg (=krass, ka ob ihr das in Deutschland kennt)... bei euch bekommt man, sagen wir mal, einen Nagellack um 2 Euro. Und hier kostet genau derselbe im selben Laden (z.B. DM) 2,60 D:

Das mit den Steuern in Österreich habe ich auch mitbekommen.... allerdings sind die Gehälter, falls ich mich nicht irre, dementsprechend etwas höher. Meine österreichische Kollegin arbeitete zuvor im gleichen Unternehmen wie jetzt und übte auch den gleichen Beruf dort aus, verdiente dort allerdings mehr wie hier. Sie meinte auch, dass die Abzüge vom Gehalt (Lohnsteuer, Versicherungen usw.) geringer sein sollen. In wie fern das stimmt, kann ich leider schlecht beurteilen.

 

Übrigens: Worte wie "arg" und "deppert" sind hier auch mehr als weit verbreitet
