the GazettE

I mean, in a lot of heavy western music, the bass mostly follows what the guitars are doing. But that's the complete opposite of what Japanese rock bands do, where you often get the bass laying down its own separate melodic foundation (Toshiya's performance in "Glass Skin" is a good example). So for Reita to suddenly just disappear is alarming.

Though, to be honest, I was never really fond of his bass playing to begin with.

reita's style isn't my taste either, but in their older songs he laid that shit down and sounded unique n funky. he was pretty unique as a bassist then, but past dim and stuff he just got...meh.

now the alt metal guitars just drown him out, and he makes no attempt to make himself heard (although that wasn't really his style) which totally sucks.

then again subconsciously comparing everyone to toshiya will do me no good anyway lololol

Lol apparently this is a thing that has been going on for a while.  Says there somewhere that these people had some video up but it has been deleted. https://twitter.com/GazemobRadio instagram deleted also bah

Slight off topic but I am just so thoroughly embarrassed by the uh, fandom if you can call it that. You really need to re-evaluate your life if you are an adult and go around calling yourself a "sixth gun" and partake in all the almost cult-like wank of fan brother and sisterhood, unless you're intending to pull a Heaven's Gate.

I could really use another GazettE gig to go to. SERIOUSLY. Just drown myself in nostalgia right now.

Also just realized D.L.N has a very faint piano playing in the background during the last minute. Mindblown.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Set list of yesterday's concert

CkdUz96WsAERorh.jpg

It was a bit chaotic at first but still freaking awesome my neck still hurts lol

I think the highlight (beside the meet & greet) was when everyone sung Happy Birthday and a stuff member bought a cake on stage and put a crown on Uruha's head

his accent when he said something in german was so cute

so helsinki show yesterday had more or less the same setlist I believe.

except was Gabriel on the Gallows played? lol can't remember.

the show was good, although I'm always left wanting something more with the gazette. I feel like the older songs like suicide circus, filth in beauty, etc. work better live than some of the dogma material. at least it's easier to jump along ^^

The band was great though. Last time I saw them, all the others apart from Ruki were left in the background. not this time.

Listened to RAY on the way home from work last night

My god, it perplexed me how one band could make a song so captivating. Ruki ever sounding like this again seems like a pipedream at this point.

I'd be lost for words if I ever hear another track like this from them again.

Ruki will never sound like that again because he probably had some vocal coaching over the last few years. Most VK vocalists sound the way they do because they flat out just don't know how to sing.

It's highly unlikely that you'll ever hear a track like that from them again. It wouldn't even make sense for them to make one.

Ruki has changed the way he sings and the rest of the band have all developed different styles of playing since then.

Listen to 2002 Wakaremichi, then 2004 Wakaremichi. Now imagine the GazettE making a track similar to Ray in 2016.  It would definitely be lacking  the energy and charm of their earlier work.

This is what happens when bands cover their old stuff.

Hyde is probably the best example of this. Pretty awful singer up until 2011. Now his singing is pretty much perfect. Amazing actually.

idk why but Ryuichi was always a great singer.

Ruki has definitely improved. His singing became pretty great around Toxic. Now it's awesome. See 2:06 of the video below. Fucking nails it. 100% perfection.

Then go to 4:17. *cringes* Oh well. He'll keep improving.

I didn't mind the rerecording of Luna Sea's first album at all. It lacked the raw youthful energy of the original, sure, but it was neat to hear it in a controlled and more "mature" context. Some songs suffered because of it, but again, it was an interesting listen.

This is rather off when it's about this band but are we even listening to same vocalists? Hyde could barely even contain his shaky, out-of-breath almost drunk karaoke-sounding mistakes nowadays in regards to L'Arcasino or some awkward moments off that 2014 Kokuritsu live. Also - are you saying that even his acclaimed, non-vk KISS-era singing sucked ass? Sheesh.

As for Ryuichi - he has a lot to be proud of as the legendary vk vocalist but he is not a "great singer" by professional means (assuming your earlier statements, you may have touched this context). Hobo yelling era of '90-'91 and failed, vocal coached vocalcraft which barely resonates with rockier material back in '98-99 are just a few instances which leave a lot to be desired in his past.

And to counter on-topic statement, for once: Ruki lost a lot off his range after DIM actually. Even just a glance at DECADE live is enough to hear that he's more suited in being a screamer/growler or raspy shouter (a la Corey Taylor) instead of being your beloved VK crooner.

---------------------------------------

But then again, I am not really feeling like measuring and jerking our vocal study-logical wangs to musically most non-professional movement (considering that VK is more of DIY in terms of musical growth than other rock movements)...so yeah.

Speaking of which: they just need to pull out some sort of fast-tempo growler/screamer album one day (DOGMA is too retardant and generic croons are anything but pleasant). Guess this will grant another dimension for further cooperation between Kai, Uruha and Aoi (Reita shalt remain in the background since he doesn't have much to offer in the midst of drop As) and will test Ruki's improvements in wider scope.

I should have noted that the last live I've seen of L'arc en Ciel was in 2012 (Nissan stadium I think). If I remember correctly, I wasn't the only one that had a "holy shit" moment when I heard Hyde's singing compared to just a year prior.

Kiss? I mean... it was aight. Listening to anything with Yukihiro kind of hurts my feelings though.

----------------------------------------------

The "hobo yelling era of '90-'91" was my personal favorite. What Saishu said was spot on. His vocal style had that raw youthful energy that fit their earlier work perfectly.

His "failed, vocal coached vocalcraft" was actually pretty great for the type of music they were making around the '98-'00 era. (i.e. Storm, Tonight). There's really nothing to complain if you're looking at it objectively.

See 5:13 of the link.

----------------------------------------------

Division is their best live and album to date. Not going to even touch on the "Ruki lost a lot off his range after DIM actually". The songs are just different. The only proof that I need is 2:06 of the Undying video that I posted earlier in the thread.

Overall I didn't care for Dogma, but Ominous was fun and Incubus had a catchy little chorus. Did anyone else notice the little annoying cuts in certain tracks? (see 1:40 of Incubus)

I figured that when I compliment a singer on this forum, it will be within the bubble of vk/jrock standards (thought that was obvious enough). If I want to fap over "great vocalists", I'll go listen to R Kelly or Luther Vandross.

I might get hate for this, but I have a confession to make. The GazettE is an overrated band. Let me explain.

I'm not impressed with any of their PVs at all. I don't think Filth in the Beauty is a masterpiece like many of the fans do. My first reaction was "This guy's English is terrible..." I know that Ruki is Japanese and therefore his English speaking skills wouldn't be as good as native's. What I don't get is why anyone would sing a song in a language they're not familiar with. Many of the songs would be better if they were sung in Japanese, like THE INVISIBLE WALL or Distorted Daytime.  In my opinion, he should stick to Japanese.  Moving on...

What's up with Inside Beast? That is the GazettE's worst song by far. Reminds me of a cross between Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson. It sounds just like any other pop song. Not to mention Ruki's notoriously bad English. Lyric example:

Bite off my skin and cell
But you cannot eat my deep inside
You kneel down and beg to me
[Give me your beast…]

GET OUT. NOTORIOUS BABY
GAGAGAGAGAGA SEXY GARBAGE
[Give me your beast…]

What even is this? I don't understand how this band is considered one of the best Visual Kei/Jrock bands of all time.  Not all of their works are terrible but most of it is rubbish.

Another thing that really pisses me off about this band is that according to Wikipedia, the GazettE is an Alternative Metal/Hard Rock/Nu Metal band.  WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

You mean to tell me that Cassis, Shiver, Vortex, Guren, Fadeless, Last Heaven, To Dazzling Darkness, and Hana Kotoba all fall under the same genre that is Alternative Metal? BS. If anything they're experimental pop songs at best.

I almost forgot to mention the CANCEROUS FANDOM. Dear god, this band attracts the weirdest 13 year old girls. People in the Youtube comments talk about "shipping" the members. Don't even get me started on the number of fanfiction articles people write because of these 5 guys...

The fact that the GazettE is more well known, has more fans, and is more popular than Lynch., Versailles, Kiryu, Nightmare, D, and X Japan sickens me.

Gazette isn't that bad, I enjoy some of their earlier releases. They have stepped their game up the last few singles and Dogma was a step in a "better" direction.

Do they deserve all the hype they get? no, not really, but how many Jrock/Visual Kei bands actually receive the hype they should/should not?
