It's really touching to get notifications for being mentioned here. I'll definitely keep a lot of hilarious memories from this place as well. If I had to pick one, that one time we all joined forces and exposed Kisaki over his fake band history was definitely a peak.

RIP Mh. Took me a while to write something…

I know I didn't post much at the end, because I took a break from the internet and especially social media. I don't know if people really recognize me, since I am here only sporadically, despite being signed since a long time. I admit, I like lurking more than actually talking to other people. I still took part in some discussions and being the weird introvert that I am, I usually regretted voicing my stupid opinions afterwards. In the end I didn't delete any posts though, because I feel that's part of forum culture, owning up to the bullshit you say, even if it's cringe and letting it stay on the internet. Some disputes and lovely banter here was funny though and it fills me with a strange fuzzy feeling to know that i have been part of some fandom drama. It's like being part of an old folk tale, you know? Now I wonder how much of the drama will be even remembered in 10 years…

Honestly, a year ago or so I believed MH would stay for much longer, since the forum managed to outlive most other de-centralized communities and websites. Seems I was wrong and it comes to an end sooner than I thought. I know there's a new community on discourse, but I have to admit, I don't like social media sites and centralized web hubs and places. I think discourse is a better alternative than having nothing, but MH's UI was miles better. MH also feels so much more personal… I cannot explain it. I just don't really feel the same thing when I go online on sites like reddit, facebook, etc. Everything's quite dull and surface level, particularly on FB.  VK fandom communities on other sites are also rather meh…

Anyway, before I start writing bullshit, I just want to thank all the people who kept the site alive for more than a decade. I discovered a lot of great bands and music here, some of the discussions were entertaining to read. Hope you are all doing fine, despite the train wreck of a year we had.

MH truly has been a special place for a lot of us. I vividly remember the chatbox era and how it was almost like a society on its own with various people filling different roles and social structures and friendships forming and failing due to drama or other things. So much time was invested not just chatting but also just reading and enjoying the conversations. Most of the personalities I remember well from the forum come from this era.

Gotten a lot of good and lasting friendships through this forum and I will be forever be grateful to MH for it.

Reciprocal shoutout to@Karma’s Hat, we started out on quite bad terms in the early days but became good friends over time, now we have met a lot of times and have a blast every time.

I've met a lot of our members IRL and I've almost never had a bad experience. Shoutouts to @Biopanda, @hyura, @Takadanobabaalien, @Jigsaw9, @Seiji, @Tokage, @allisapp , @digi,@spockittyand ALL of you I've talked to or interacted with throughout the years here.

Some people have come and gone, others are still a part of my life, but I hope you all know you helped form who I am today.

If anyone else want to drop their appreciations for the forum and the people this is the place to do so!

It's a been a long ride. I've been on here for 11 years, close to 12. Everything has to come to an end and I honestly can't say where I would be without this place. Without any hesitation I can say that Monochrome Heaven, or Tainted World as it was when I first joined, changed my life. I'm genuinely curious how that makes people like Zess and Ito feel that they've had such a significant impact on a person's life just by making this place and running for all these years. The current trajectory on which my life is on was set by all the friendships I've made in this place over the years, and through everything I went through this place was a constant companion. Zess, Bear/Sumostig, Junna, Shizu, Whirlingblack especially have been significant to me and I'm grateful. Who knows how deep I'd be in normiedom without these people influencing my taste in the way they did. If it wasn't Christmas with the family I wasn't as tipsy as I was, I'd probably have a whole lot more to say about this than I do now. Me and Whirlingblack started really hanging out proper in the beginning of 2017 when I decided to just bail Finland. I stayed at his place for some time and I don't remember what we did together, but what I do know for sure is that it was the kind of debauchery what we would we doing together and independently to this day. Shizu is another person that by his existence has assured me I'm first of all not entirely alone in world with my tastes and interests.

But it wasn't just the few people that one stuck around with all these years that made the place, but also all the characters that've come and gone over the years. There is so much stuff to dig out of the annals of monochrome heaven and tainted world that in my case it'd be a book.

What the new people on here don't know, is that this place had a tremendously active chat back in the days that was integrated into the website. Almost every was there at one point, and during its heydays absolutely nothing was going on my life, so I was there almost every minute or every single day.  In my country you have to take dancing lessons for the prom for like six months, and in 2012 when I went through that thing most of that time I'd be giving live status updates throughout the whole experience. Before and after I'd be sitting in Mcdonald's drinking coffee and it became a running joke that I was always online, always people watching in Mcdonald's. Probably some of my best memories from the board are from the chat years. Shoutout to everyone who was there to experience it

So much stuff has happened on this board that new people have no idea, because so much has been lost to chat logs, private messages and purges over the years. The forum as it stands rn is only a tiny fraction of all that had taken place.

I'm too drunk right now to remember any of this stuff, but it means so much to me and I'll cherish all of these memories forever. Here is some of people I've met irl over the years from here in a random order

wb, marcus, jigsaw, shizu, saltofstones, allisapp, panda, pretsy, hyura, slsr, stylelover, 237q, gaz, tokage and many, many others I've met for a minute or two during gigs.

And then someone uploaded this VR video with really good sound quality

They're gonna do another live next Saturday 07/18. Idk if they're gonna stream it or not but I hope they do. Or one of those random Kyuho/Juho Q&A streams would be nice at the very least 🤞😫

A lot has been already written about the SS uniform being an 'edgy fashion thing' that was copied over and over again by generations of vk bands from the 80s until today. Personally I think it's cringy and stupid but I can't really feel offended after seeing it done so many times.
In fact it's also pretty exotic and in a way understandable that the Japanese wouldn't feel as sensitive to it as Europeans and would generally be less educated about it than them.
What I find much more problematic is the way a lot of bands are using the  imagery of Japanese imperialism. (WWII Uniforms, rising sun flags, propaganda) After all, Japan has its own fascist history of imperialism and war crimes, mainly in other Asian countries. And in contrast to Germany they don't really admit them and don't make mention of it in their history books. It's not really controversial to use these images, despite the crimes they stand for. Using symbols from foreign history as some exotic gimmick is one thing (albeit not great), but using the same propaganda your ancestors used a while back without any proper reflection and not expecting backlash either just shows that young Japanese people are very oblivious and ignorant due to their lack of a proper political education.

It might sound weird from a western perspective, but visual kei is like the straightest and most homophobic music scene in Japan. We tend to look at visual kei with western eyes and mix its cultural aspects with things that belong to the western culture. Fanservice and provocations used for shock value put aside, the androgynous aesthetics of visual kei band rarely expressed anything related to gender identity and especially sexual orientation.
After all, it started with people like X Japan who admittedly were inspired by glam rock bands and way of life, which I would find hard to connect to sexual orientation. Visual kei early bandomen were mostly chinpiras, bosozokus (bikers) and the likes. They really incarnated the somewhat glamrock aesthetic of riding bikes getting drunk, banging girls, etc. Of course X had their own decadent/romantic taste that made them different, and a lot of influences changed the scene over time. However, visual kei is still remains 99% driven by social outcasts looking for pussy and very rarely by something else.
In Japan we also have onnagatas, who are kabuki actors specialized in female roles that are again 99% straight. Bandoman with feminine looks call themselves onnagata, not josou (crossdresser), implying that the cultural source behind their looks is not connected with crossdressing but just playing a female role in a band,  but again this something that might be hard to completely understand it taken outside of Japanese culture. For example Izam, the king of all onnagatas, married more than once and has more tha one child, and outside of his role in Shazna he rarely did anything ambiguous, just like the kabuki onnagatas out of stage. Both media and fans are everything but respectful of privacy, but I've rarely seen Japanese articles or message board questioning bandomen sexual orientation. That's because the number 1 reason people do visual kei is because the girls like it (well, liked it, I am not sure this is the trend with young girls anymore).
Soft Ballet/Ken Morioka are closer to Soft Cell/Marc Almond so I would not even count them as visual kei even though they had some influence on it. And of course, there are exceptions as you mentioned. The chinpira bandomen of the 90's almost extincted and younger generations bandomans are usually anime/game otakus. They grew up with different influences and values, and it would make sense if the current incarnation of visual kei instinctively appealed to more people with sexual orientation/gender identity concerns, especially after Japan started talking about these issues in a less obsolete viewpoint.

this may be off topic but this topic reminds me of what i always wanted to say about mh.

idk what we overseas fans can do to make vk more popular than what it is, but one thing i think doable is to make mh become more popular.
vk may be dead one day but mh should live on after that. personally i always see mh as a very underrated japanese music forum that has high potential to grow bigger.

if the stats on similarweb aren't lying, it's very impressive that we have around 1.3m page views monthly (from 200k total visits * 6.6 page views per a visit). what i mean is mh already has a huge user base in hands but the engagements of the content on the forum are a lot less compared to it. for example, we have very few concurrent registered users online as you can see from the image below. it's only ~20 members online. (700 guests are mostly crawlers i believe). i know that it's taken at a random time of a day but usually it's still not significantly more than this either considering we have over 9.6k members registered. additionally, we can have more followers on facebook and twitter from our daily visitors if we want to. (it hurts to see that mh which is the source of almost everything japanese rock related has far less likes than random j-rock pages on facebook even demon android's one.)

moreover, traditional forum software like IPB is kinda 2000-ish, but i'm just saying. i have nothing against it. IPB is not bad though. it regularly gets updates and bug fixes. but nowadays there are a number of better open source alternatives as well; e.g. discourse and nodebb. converting the database from one to another is such a pain though if we ever do it.

sysops are one of the most important roles that almost nobody notices the effort they put behind the scenes. we have had only 3-4 sysops since the inception of mh and now there is only one left. it's a vital position that needs to recruit too. what'd we do if they're all gone? it'd even mean the end of mh. (not sure about how recruiting a new sysop is going, but it seems difficult to get one to begin with.)

at the end of the day, staff are all volunteers. finding a suitable staff member who is willing to spend their free time is hard already but finding one who is dedicated to the community is even harder. one day the current staff members will be rotated as well. so we're not going anywhere if we don't expand the user base. we can find more talented people from a bigger one.

    this is my two cents:

it's time for mh 4.0. sooner or later mh has  to change too. otherwise, the community will be gone if we don't do something beforehand. if i were the founder, i'd rebrand "monochrome-heaven" to something else shorter, easier to type and pronounce, and easy to remember esp for non-english natives. having a dash (-) in a domain name looks unprofessional for a brand imo. just like when "thefacebook.com" becoming "facebook.com". the former is not a professional brand name compared to the latter. they bought it once they had the money to afford it and became the "facebook" we know nowadays.

rebranding mh may be too much for those who're familiar with the name but it'd be a big step to be known better. by rebranding i mean changing the look of the forum too whether it be a new skin or even new forum software that's more modern. we can still stick with vk just like before and be more open to the general japanese rock scene which is more lively and has a wider fanbase like ruling it all online not only on here but also on other social networks.

yeah, i know that it's easier said than done. it takes a lot of effort and is very challenging to accomplish, but knowing the potential mh has not being used is wasting as well.

I mean "patriarchy" is the reason why the assumption that women can't hurt men and can't be held accountable because they are weak (and so are men who are hurt by women) exists in the first place. So in theory, taking that down and removing these harmful stereotypes first would indeed lead to men victims reporting DV more and women attackers not getting away with it as easily. As @spockitty said, while there may be people calling themselves feminist who work against this goal, the movement as a whole is supposed to reach it.
