platanity

rock in korea is basically dead and it's nearly impossible to resurrect it. 
there are only handful of bands with potential and yet, they struggle to sustain any substantial music
because korean music scene is under heavy dictatorship of cheap bubblegum pops and hype-based trendy rap music (and trust me, 90% of them are not even tasteful).
 
as someone who have seen the slow and painful demise of korean rock (as if any of it has existed in the past),
i blame on the lack of cultural depth of koreans and their untreatable trait of vulnerability to hype and trendy stuffs,
and above all, their perceptions on 'rock' being something loud, serious, and intimidating.
 
underground venues at hongdae and deahak-ro were slowly replaced with techno clubs and bars, 
so-called "bands" like nell eventually became more mainstream-friendly (not that i blame, they need-ed in order to survive), 
oldschool k-rockers like pia, schizo, etc became almost extinct (not if they are playing major venues like pentaport . . . which also became sellouts to pop and indies)
even pseudo rocker seotaiji didnt even last 2 years.
 
rock was never a thing for koreans. 
maybe for only a few, but not for the vast.
it's a cultural thing i say -

Wait, is all this stuff new to you guys? Dir en grey has never had great production. Back in 2008 Kerrang wrote a review of Uroboros and stated that due to the mixing the album lacked "punch".
 
Complaining about loudness reminds me of baby boomers remembering the "good ol' days". This is an album you're supposed to play loud, and under such circumstances it sounds great. Also keep in mind depending on the speakers you're listening to the album with -- yes, even headphones -- you're bound to get a difference experience. At one point last night I listened to a part of the album through one of those bluetooth speakers and the sound quality, of course, was "bad". For some reason the speaker was focusing on Shinya's tom's more than anything. It was really weird; but going back and listening in other formats (nice Sony speakers, studio monitoring headphones, etc.) I think the album sounds "fine".
 
Then again, I generally don't subscribe to this audiophilia stuff because I tend to focus on the compositions more than anything else. and I often listen to really bad quality Aud recordings of bands, so there's that.

I wonder why people people assume that the CD would sound better than an ALAC or even a lossy AAC rip. Even if you'd be able to make out any differences, they would be so miniscule it wouldn't change your overall perception of the music.
 
Other than that I have to say that I happen to enjoy the production on the album... sure the dynamic range sucks but it's 2018 and this is an aggressive rock/metal record, what did you expect? It's raw, it's gritty but at no point did I get the feeling that I'm listening to a wall of noise. Even in the more chaotic moments during the first half the instruments retained their distinct textures and presence.

i am not a big fan of previews or samples. to be frank, i dont really care if there are samples or not.
for very few cases in the past, i listened to the samples waaaay too much before the real thing came out,
which it end up making the real deal an ancient in spite i have not listened to the whole record.
i think dogma was one of them..maybe add a couple of few

omg that was beautiful. love the lyrics tho!
maybe it's because a pr edit version, the song feels a little short inspite of the song's concept.

I suspect Kyo has gone full Maynard James Keenan and loves his side project more than his main band. 

and yet despite all the negativity most of you are going to listen to it anyway x

the previews were awesome.
