sai got a reaction from cheesy_VK_Freak in Cheesiest Visual Kei PVs!
I know we've had a thread like this before, but it basically died out and with so many new community members I figured it'd be better to remake the thread than revive the old one (not to mention a lot of videos of that one have been removed due too switching boards and YT copyright).

So here it is, feel free to share any PVs that you find atrocious, is it in production quality, having a lame "story", tackiness or just for being absolutely cheesy or over the top. PVs you just find uninteresting for not having a lot happening don't belong here though, make sure the PVs you post have at least some sort of humor factor. I'll start with a few of my favourites :'D

On a thread about cheesy PVs one does not simply forget about Versailles, especially their indie PVs. From the awful CGI rose petals to hilarious vampire storylines and the ever so famous castle where at least 30 other PVs were filmed, Aristocrat's Symphony always earns a few giggles from me when it appears on plug.dj.

Kings of cheese, basically. D should rename to "T" for tacky. The only thing that makes this even worse than Versailles is that they're taking themselves completely serious. Even when being a D stan a few years back, their PVs were really REALLY painful to look at most the time.

Probably filmed with a handicam in any other regular living street. But don't forget about the open forest, where you can see cars passing in the distance. Absolutely amazing and a master piece of our time.

    Pls share your faves

NOTE: Please try not to post more than 3 videos to avoid lag!

I agree with this! I know all music forums have both leechers and active community members, but in my personal opinion quite a bit of visual kei fans have started to feel so incredibly entitled lately to have the releases they want on the release date and if they don't they start throwing hissyfits about it. The really old VK veterans had to trade to get the stuff they wanted, they had to climb mountains, cross rivers, fight dragons for that one Gazette release

I remember when someone bought the limited edition of an album and uploaded it and also promised to make a DVD rip and people legitly started spamming their thread with impatient and rude messages as to why the DVD (which was a full live DVD in ISO so you can imagine the size of that file + the time it would need to rip/upload) wasn't uploaded yet only two days after the initial album was posted.

People need to realize that behind every file there is a person who bought that release, probably paid a shitload for shipping (if they're physical copies) and then was so kind to rip it to their computer in a good quality and share it with the rest of the world. You don't even have to press thanks or even say it, I just wish more people realized this before they start calling someone a liar or an ass.

Though concerning bitrate, I've always been on CAT's side with this: share it to the fullest or don't share at all. People who upload releases in 128-192kbps and say "go buy the album if you want a better quality" are obviously not sharing the release to share awesome music and give one of their favourite artists more exposure, but purely because they want a big e-penis. "Oh look at my 320/Lossless rip of that album that you can't have lol", is something I'm very much against. On one side I'm like "yeah okay I'm happy people share it at all" (especially since I've gotten into a lot of Japanese regular indie music, where it's a lot harder to come by releases than it is in VK) but sharing bad quality isn't going to solve the problem. If you really share a lower bitrate to have more people buy the album, then I've got some news for you: it doesn't work. A lot of VK fans don't care about bitrate that much (as long as it's listenable), especially if they're young and don't have the cash to import VK CDs from Japan. I actually would feel more opposed to purchasing an album I only have an 128 rip of because it misses a lot of details that I can hear in a 320 rip. Good quality can just really enhance the musical experience, at least, that's how I see it. People who want to buy the album will buy it anyway, this "here's a low quality"-method doesn't work and it makes you look like a douche, sorry.

tl;dr - share to the fullest or don't share at all

    SORRY FOR THE LONG POST.

sai got a reaction from suji in KISAKI conspiracy? Strange things I noticed related to Kisaki's old bands Levia and LAYBIAL
I agree with nekkichi when I say that we're not digging into his private life, but his professional life. If this WERE digging into his private life without his consent, then I too would not appreciate it out of a lack of respect, but it's honestly not. Kisaki basically created tapes made up of other bands' music to expand his personal discography and thought he could get away with it. Kisaki also did many other things in his professional life that he really shouldn't be proud of (Google pictures-scandal, Phantasmagoriagate, tax fraud, and I won't be surprised if we'll be adding stuff to this list in the future). I also agree with Yuugi; if this had been any other semi-popular VK guy I doubt he would've gone under the radar.

In all honesty, Kisaki just desperately wants attention and apparently his music/actual band isn't succesful enough to do that for him. And sorry if this sounds too harsh, but nobody is forcing you to visit or read this thread. Saying how everyone participating in it is just out to get Kisaki is not going to make the thread less active, in fact, it'll most probably have the opposite effect. Like I said before, if it involved digging into his private life I would heavily disapprove as well, but it's not.

sai got a reaction from Komorebi in [Band Battle] MEJIBRAY vs. DIAURA
I would definitely vote for DIAURA. I don't really listen to either of these two artists, but I can honestly say that what I've heard from DIAURA is more original and better-sounding than anything I've heard from MEJIBRAY. I see MEJIBRAY in the lane of the metalcore movement in VK sans a good vocalist. The guy from DIAURA has a nice voice, whereas the guy from MEJIBRAY either can't really sing or is desperately in need of singing lessons.

So if I had to listen to either one of them for a whole day, then definitely DIAURA. To be quite honest, I don't get the hype around MEJIBRAY at all.

I'll probably get shot for this, but now that there's a thread for these I'm going to give it a try anyway.

I simply do not understand people who claim they love MEJIBRAY for the vocals. That is mainly because in my ears the vocalist sounds awful. I know there are two kinds of awful, as in "I don't like the sound of his voice or the way he uses it but technically he can still sing" and then there's the "there are so many things wrong technically that it just sounds like shit" option. For me, MEJIBRAY's vocalist falls in the second category. His screams are awful, his regular vocals are weak and usually can't carry the music and he's out of tune about 99% of the time. Like I said, I'm probably going to get some angry replies to this but this is MY OPINION. I'm not stating it as fact, nor am I trying to shit on your favourite vocalist/band. I just can't listen to him.

also guys hating on Gazette is so 2007. Idk I'm not even a Gazette fan but I feel like quite some people hate on Gazette because it's popular to hate (while actually listening to tons of indie versions of Gazette themselves, GOTTA RAISE MY INDIE-CRED).

Personally I think the band with the coolest fandom was Kagrra,. When they were still around, there was not much bitching about their experimental stages. Hell, even when they released their Shu album (which was their weakest album in my own opinion) there wasn't as big of a drama than when the GazettE released TOXIC. I heard from multiple people who saw them live at the signing session during their Europe tour that the five members (and mostly Isshi) were also incredibly nice people who were really nice to their fans. Also when I watch their live videos I see that they're having lots of fun on stage and that the entire venue is jumping up and down with them, which doesn't happen with all bands. Too bad they disbanded in the end I really had wanted to see them live once.

I consider Asagi one of those vocalists who's got a fantastic natural voice, but strains it in all the wrong ways to create sounds that are just not pleasing to the ear. If he would cut down on the screams and falsettos in most of D's later material he would sound a lot more bearable lmao.

I do not speak Russian, but I've understood enough to realize that this is a dispute between nekkichi and Pretsy that is best off being discussed privately (as was already the case, from what I can understand). Keep personal issues to PM and Hellion, don't add any fuel to the fire. All you're doing is starting drama for the sake of starting drama. This is not allowed on the regular forums, nor is it allowed here, keep that in mind.

NB basically killed themselves when going visual kei lmfao

I agree with whoever said that today's music industry is awfully outdated, especially in Japan. There are not a lot of artists in VK that distribute their stuff digitally, and when they do it's only in the Japanese iTunes store. Websites like HearJapan offered cheaper digital releases compared to other digital distributors, so I think the website was for a good cause (especially since they also offered bonuses and higher bitrates). It's a shame that not many people bothered to pay less than 500 yen for a full album they actually really enjoyed; most full lengths on iTunes cost 2000yen, physical copies usually 3000yen. With HearJapan gone, in order for fans to buy digital copies now, they'd have to make a Japanese iTunes account and buy Japanese iTunes cards online; purchasing the physical copy from CDJapan therefore is much easier, even though it costs more (of course there's also amazon, but we don't talk about amazon's digital quality lmao). Besides, I know people similar to me who prefer to have the music in the bitrate they desire; iTunes offers 256kbps rips that sometimes sound like shit, especially on high quality headphones. Websites like bandcamp offer a solution to this, and perhaps putting their music on bandcamp costs less than putting it on iTunes, but I wouldn't dare state this as fact.

These artists keep complaining about overseas fans that download their stuff while they're not even their target audience. If my target audience was Japan and I had people outside of Japan buying my stuff here and there, I'd see it as something nice on the side, unless these people would encourage my Japanese audience to buy less. If that's what's going on, then I understand why bands like NB are upset. If not, I don't see how they're making huge losses from it if they're not putting any sort of money into promotion outside of Japan.

Not everyone can buy everything, but most musicians understand that; most visual kei fans are teenagers who are still in high school and have no income except for their montly allowance they get from their parents, and you can't blame them for not spending that allowance on CDs every single time. If you however DO have the money to support your favourite artist, I feel like you should. I know not many VK fans feel up to that, but how can you make people purchase more?

I feel like Korean pop companies found the answer to that question and it's called packaging. EXO for example sold more than 1 million copies of their first album, and even though Kpop has a way bigger target audience because pop music is just more mainstream than VK is, I wouldn't deny that the packaging and price have something to do with it. I know that in Japan prices for CDs are just regularly high, but Korean pop CDs usually cost about 15 euros and are packaged in boxes, books, metal cases etc. with the CD, a thick photobook, a card signed by one of the band members and usually a big poster for free as well. I love buying Kpop CDs because of this; of course I buy a CD when I think it's good, but that fantastic packaging just gives it a little bit extra. I can understand some indie VK bands can not afford this kind of packaging, but I know plenty of bands can. Make it desireable to purchase the CD, give it extra things that a downloaded copy could not give you. If VK is so oriented on looks, why not add in a seperate photobook, for example? You'd have to pay extra for a photographer and the printing, but if it made you sell more copies in the end and raise the profit, why not?

Though selling more copies in general only enriches the record company, not so much the artist, as we all know. In Europe, 25$ for a newly released CD is a normal price and the least you can do (legally) is listen to 30 second samples in the store itself (if it even offers that option). That alone is not going to make me buy an album.

Anyway this became way too long and doesn't make any sense probably but I hope you at least understood what I was trying to say lol.

That's basically the same as what you're saying here because it could make him fall into a serious depression when left untreated and it's going to take a bit longer than a year for him to get out of that. Mental illness is a very serious issue and is more than "going crazy". People with a personality disorder are not crazy, in fact, there are many types of personality disorders that are hardly noticeable (for example, take an avoidant personality disorder; these people are usually just fine until they get into situations where they have to perform, both socially as academically). I'm pretty sure there is someone you know in real life that has a personality disorder without knowing they have it.

I think it's good that he acknowledged that he had a problem and is going to seek help. He could've gone on and denied he had a problem but that probably wouldn't have helped, both for his own health as for the band's group atmosphere. Once therapy starts to help him, he could already restart slowly again with band activities, so in cases like these I think it's really important that he's taking a break. Better a break than a disbandment, right?

Interesting thread Zess! I have quite a few album covers that I really like, but I'll try to narrow it down to three of my biggest favourites.

    Boris - New Album

Reason: Well basically Boris is kind of hit/miss when it comes to album covers to me. Their covers are usually very simplistic, a single colour and the name of the album + artist. New Album however matches the style of music the album presents. It's light, yet even though there are a lot of things going on in the image, it still manages to portray a very calm atmosphere. The use of colour and mixing of such is done really well, yet Boris didn't drift far from their usual methods, as the woman painted here is most probably Wata, the band's guitarist.

虹の彼方 - Seven Colors Variations -

Reason: The album cover is actually made up of two parts, the other side is on the back, but as it was hard to find in a normal size, here's the front. This is an album of an electronics artist, and what I love about electronics is how calm and atmospheric that music can be. A cover like this matches the type of music well. It's simple, the brush strokes rough but accurate and the font clear but not over the top. The wooden border looks better in the complete picture, to be quite honest, so I'm going to disregard that one.

    RADWIMPS - Xと○と罪と

Reason: I guess this is a very personal choice, but I do love this cover. The black background with the huge mash-up of colours that are all unorganized yet still manage to show recognizable shapes are in some strange compatible with how this album sounds. And let's be honest, it's just pretty to look at.

I didn't expect anything great, but I was still extremely underwhelmed. The vocalist was never the best, but it's like she found a way to sound even more shrill and annoying than before. As common as it is for J-indie vocalists to sing outside of their range and sound strained, her attempts on this album were just plain bad (kinda sounded like karaoke at times). The songwriting didn't help either...I don't think they played or sung a single, memorable melody the entire album - which doesn't bode well when you're trying to play hooky, melodic rock of this nature. The featured drummers (esteemed as they may be) didn't do much to save the album either.

The hype surrounding this band is certainly lost on me. They started off nicely with their first mini album (I liked their first PV enough to buy the mini blindy...and via proxy at that), but everything that followed has been a bit of a mess. It's a shame because female-fronted math-rock bands are still pretty novel.

On the bright-side, at least the production on the album was pretty decent this time around.
