Everything was already said about this. But what i want to add to the discussion are my subjective observations. I have the feel with social media hubs slowly replacing regular decentralized online communities, message boards and forums there is a change in the way fandoms communicate and behave. My feeling is that especially the younger generations don't "get" forum culture and therefore misunderstand what's being said here.

You see it quite often that fans on social media are foaming from anger because "someone said something offensive about my fave on some forum", when the thing that was said was in jest and not serious. Internet humour in general has changed a lot. There are a lot of jokes, memes and phrases I wouldn't post on twitter, because I know for 100% that someone will take it out of context and send their brigade after me.

Now VK fandom was always very emotionally driven… that's why i usually tended to avoid fandom spaces, because I did not care about seeing people shitting on each other for liking one band more than the other. There was so much drama, fake friendships and backstabbing in the community, it was tiresome. Many VK fans are certainly very opinionated about anything and things can rub them the wrong way easily. And there was always the issue that some people's opinion weighted more than others' and they thought they had exclusive rights to brag about others, but screamed bloody murder when others did the same.

My impression too is that the people who stuck around the longest became more "chill". Also reddit… is a pretty toxic and one-sided hell hole.

It seems he didn't just try to jump from the balcony, but also walked onto the highway to end his life during tour. This is rough stuff. Japan has got to start accepting that depression is a serious illness and not something that one can just "get over."

This is a strange way of looking at it. I don't think anybody would criticise him if he'd simply told them "I've decided there are other things in life I want to pursue, so I'm leaving the band as of x-date", but completely ghosting your friends/colleagues/bandmates/whatever without warning is just scummy regardless of the reason (unless you literally died or became incapacitated somehow).

I remember people saying he's emotionally abusive and would self-harm in front of girlfriends to manipulate them. I almost hope it's true because I can't imagine anyone being sick in the head enough to make that one up. Some Tanuki users would say that he hits his (former) bandmates.
If it's not true, it makes me wonder why some people have it out for him enough to say shit like that.

    和 (wa)(harmony)

We don’t like that Punk has an aggressive image. There is a saying in Japan that goes “Respect with harmony”, which means that it;s important to not just get along with each other, but also to discuss and talk with each other firmly. We feel this is also important as a “band” as well, which is why we chose the kanji for “harmony”.

    Tommy: 鮫 (same)(shark)
A shark is strong, beautiful and disliked.

    TsutomuUSA: 笑 (wara)(smile)
Because I always want to give my smile to anything.

Tommy: A musician can convey a lot of information at a glance, for example, melody, lyrics, style and expression. I thought it’s wonderful.
I started to play the guitar after I saw a live video of THE BLUE HEARTS, I was immediately impressed by their amazing guitar performance.

TsutomuUSA: I just enjoy playing. I was inspired by NOFX

Tommy: I’ve been in BEBOP since my high school years.

TsutomuUSA: I have played in a band since I was 17, I played in three bands before joining BEBOP.

It did teach us that you never should give up, even when a band comes to a standstill, there is always someone who will share a helping hand. We’ve learned that friendship is very important and that you shouldn’t lose it.

    Tommy: Old-fashioned and clumsy.
Tommy: When I saw “The High-Lows” at their first live tour in my hometown of Niigata, Japan.
I saw the artist of my dreams in front of me, I was amazed that it was “real”.
Tommy: I switched from guitar to vocals, and I started to laugh/smile on stage.
Back in the days, I tried not to laugh, nowadays I wonder why I refused it.

Tsutomu USA: That’s it’s gotten more dynamic.
Tommy: I write songs based on the lyrics, So when I have a lyric that feels good, I’ll start writing the melody.
Tommy: To escape into memories, which leads into creating lyrics.
Yes, Tommy writes the lyrics and melody, and the rest is left to the band.
We arrange the songs in the way we want, and after that we complete it together at the studio.
Tommy: A place where you can drink alcohol endlessly.
Yes, since we are a band, we're doing it in that style so it’s a challenge to find a member who can keep up with us.
Tommy: The moment of when the ad-lib melody gets you hooked. Probably because you never can’t do it again.

TsutomuUSA: What do you mean? playing? (Laughs)

For some reason, we used to be stubborn about it. But now we are open to it, so if you see us on the floor, be free to have a chat with us.

It’s not something we can interfere with. We try to keep up our life as normal as possible, and if we get an invite to play a gig, we will try our best!
    Tommy: Whiskey, especially Nikka Whisky.

TsutomuUSA: When I’m staring at my Shiba dog.

The last live show with Fuzzy.
It was a memorable and precious experience for Tommy to see his childhood friend, with whom he came to Tokyo together, leaving the band. The live performance was so memorable and valuable because the audience loved it and enjoyed it so much.

Unlike some other punk bands, BEBOP are not an aggressive band at all, we do have good melodies and lyrics filled with lots of ups, downs and shadows. We hope that people who saw us live for the first time that they will leave with a positive one phrase in their mind.

Tommy: Co-star with Johnny Rotten, Mercy and Hiroto!

TsutomuUSA: Living on as a drummer

Tommy: Just keep going! It’s not that difficult.

    TsutomuUSA: Everything is fun!

Tommy: It’s alright to believe in what you feel it’s amazing.

TsutomuUSA: Just have fun in your life.

I always thought shipping real people is gross, even when I was younger. I do like to see band members with strong, healthy interpersonal relationships though. You know, being able to make edgy jokes, sharing food and going out to eat, working through roadblocks like sickness or multiple side projects. It's fun to watch behind-the-scenes stuff where they're clearly comfortable with each other and are great friends. A good inter-band relationship adds a lot to the band because even if you have an absolutely legendary but soulless, only-here-for-the-money group they're still gonna be less of a fun show than some noobs jammin' out together. Nothing sucks more than having a member who looks like he'd rather deep-throat his own guitar stock than be in the same room with the other guys (and I have seen guys with that look/body language, multiple times).

My heart and best wishes goes to Genki, to be honest. I've said it from the start, the whole 8PSB project seems more like/suited for Koichi than it is to him. I hope he finds something else and that we continue to hear from him. A band, solo or whatever it is. The guy is more capable than just 8PSB.

ahnchc reacted to Karma’s Hat in Does technique matter to Japanese vocalists?
Punk is in visual kei's DNA and that's why the vocals in vk are often if not always at least in part stylised and the emphasis isn't on technical ability but in the performance. The genre itself is long and storied at this point with fads coming and going, so sometimes when it takes influence from different genres it adapt to its new needs in the way its performed, so some dudes sing "better" like the people trying to do X power ballads or anthemic metalcore choruses, and some sing "worse" like idk the most obvious hardcore punk influenced examples like Piass and ANTI FEMINISM or something. They're trying to do different things.

The reason why guys like Ruki and Kyo* sound, or sounded in Ruki's case, rough and stylised is because they're from a different era when the emphasis on technical ability wasn't what it is and was in metal in the west around that time, while guys from newer metalcore bands from a completely different era like Jiluka, Dexcore, Nokubura that are influenced by different bands are at the very least on par if not better than many of their American colleagues from the bands very successful in their style like BMTH, Of Mice and Men, Chealsea Grin etc. because the emphasis is now on the vocalist's technical ability like it is in the rest of the genre in the west. Basically tl;dr vk does what it wants to do and it performs at the level of an American Idol finalist, Kpop schlager belter or some other circus bear on an unicycle trying to woo the masses to consume more product by jumping through fiery hoops at the crack of the corporate whip when it wants to, but more often than not it doesn't because it's main objective as music isn't to do that.

Then of course there's legions and legions of music from all genres in Japan with exceptionally skilled people involved, but the people still using the Jrock tag pretty much ignore everything that isn't vk and ONE OK ROCK. Even if you go searching for vk as a newbie you'll be encountered by a pretty significant bias for newer bands and especially a bias for the more vaguely metal sounding bands from western vk boom years in favor of bands that are really new like the ones I mentioned prior or the older classics. In the early vk scene more than a few bands have very skilled vocalists like La'Cryma Christi, Luna Sea and even L'arc.

    * Personally I'll never forget the time when they were trying to make it in the west and all the paid mainstream reviewers started ooing and aaing about the Japanese Mike Patton. Kyo sounds and always sounded, vk as fuck.

I'm not sure if this style has a name but it's a more of a thing in Japan than the west. Baggy, long and straight cut (not really accentuating any body curves) is how I tend to dress myself. It's an easy style to make more feminine or masculine or more formal/casual depending on the occasion. Most importantly it's super comfortable at all times.
