  1. Very much interested -- any theme works for me ;)

I do think it would be neat if one of these times the partners were assigned first and then they would choose themes for each other. But obviously with some leniency and chances for re-rolls so no one gets stuck with themes they feel like they can't satisfy.

But Xmas theme or 2020 musical finds sounds great too B)

  3. I understand what you're saying essentially. I used to not really hear it, but nowadays there are a lot of vocalists I can only enjoy when I'm "in the mood".

Check out early Janne Da Arc and Rentrer en Soi. After like 12 years of listening to visual kei, Yasu and Satsuki have consistently stuck out to me as some of the best vocalists, and tend to avoid a bit of the excessive vibrato and pitch slurring that a lot of other talented vk vocalists tend to embellish their singing with

  4. Thinking back on all the instances where I mentioned Visual Kei to non-VK fans (usually people who listen to a wide variety of genres, or even to people who love certain subcultures of other J-music), I've had this cumulative sense that the biggest barrier to entry for people is the VOCALS.

I think it's easy to think the least accessible part of VK is the visuals, but that seems more like a positive draw nowadays, considering how increasingly trendy anime and Japanese cute aesthetic shit is in mainstream youth culture. I believe there is something about the general style of how VK singers sing that is kind of uncomfortable and dramatic for western rock or metal fans, who otherwise like the instrumentals.

Of course, there's a gradient of how guilty vocalists are of this, and I think the more normal (to western ears) vocalists tend to be the bands that do better with general music, but not vk, fans.

To help think about how to better communicate this, I clicked shuffle play based on the tag 'visual kei' in my library. Sure enough, a Due le Quartz song comes up, and it has

    1) seductive sounding vocal fry spoken word throughout

    2) sudden ultra deep voice ad libs coming from far left and right

    3) falsetto ghostly vocals

    4) whispers

    5) gasps

    6) whistles

    7) occasional gag screams

...on top of the normal sung vocals, which have a typical vk vibrato fetish.

Also, I would say bad engrish vocals sound weirder than japanese lyrics to foreigners.

  5. I don't know if I agree with this, but I think it's an interesting point.

If I think back 10+ years ago to the forefront technical/fast players, I think of Versailles, Matenrou Opera, Deluhi. Go listen to Teru's earliest work with Aikaryu, Hizaki with Garnet grave in 1998 (let alone the Schwardix & Solo stuff), Anzi's old power metal band Masterpiece, and Leda's playing in Crimson Head. They were always shredders. Of course they improved with age, but they were always speed-geeks from the start.

Also, because visual kei musicians are almost always influenced by musicians in the global rock/metal world, I think its unfair to compare the 2000's with now. With the global waning of rock music from the 2000's to 2010's, a lot of this decade was defined by music with high technical merit. The icons of the early 2000's were often nu-metal bands with no guitar soloes like System of a Down, Disturbed, Slipknot and Linkin Park. Whereas in the early 2010's,  metal kids were getting excited about Animals as Leaders, Periphery, and 'djent'. Even now, a lot of the big NEW rock/metal bands of the 2010's are proggy shred bands (Polyphia, Intervals, Chon). There wasn't as much of an audience for those kind of bands in 2005. So it would make sense that visual kei in the 2010's has a higher skill level, because it reflects the global trends.

  6. You guys really gonna exclusively stan "Inhale"? I'm also in the camp who never enjoyed FED as much as I hoped I could, but the track is 50% boring djent fuckery. I admit it has an amazing solo, but that's the case for almost every Leda track. I'd pick something like "Beyond These Walls" over "Inhale" any day-- and "Beyond These Walls" still has semi-cringe verse vocals..

@TheStoic brings up an excellent point about the recording sound/mixes, but unfortunately, I think that is a problem with Visual Kei across the board in 2019. The sound a lot of us may be yearning for when we think of DELUHI is partially intertwined with 2000's production techniques, that have been left in the 2000's. Oh, real-sounding drums, where art thou?

Leda was suuuuuch a monster musician a decade ago, between Crimson Head, Galneryus, and DELUHI-- let alone how much he's progressed since. I'm just hoping in the next chapter he gives all that talent the setting it deserves. Better vocalist, better sounding recordings, and less trying to be like Animals as Leaders when you have the melodic charisma that Animals as Leaders doesn't.

  7. If the aim is to prevent people from buying into conspiracies, they're only hurting their cause by legitimizing that the powers that be are trying to censor "the truth". The conspirators will just take this as evidence of corporate level collusion.

If a conspiracy is really nonsense, you don't need to suppress it, because most people will already think its nonsense (as demonstrated by the two posts above me).
