  1. I'm at a weird point where I know a super basic amount of Japanese words and grammar that I'm able to pick out a lot of words and context from Vkei songs.

Maybe there is hope in me learning Japanese. Just gotta find the right program to work with. I tried Duolingo but I didn't like it too much.

  2. Who the fuck decided that for architecture or design to be "modern", it has to have no curves or intricate decorations, and has to be completely made up of straight lines and right angles?

Bruh if the future is jut a bunch of squares, I wanna live in the past

I'm mostly just disillusioned by seeing so many old homes being taken down and replaced with really ugly looking ones. Like, I get that cheapness and efficiency is importance, but I wish they would figure out a cheap and efficient style that you can add on, and I wish they would at least keep the artistic vision of the buildings they're replacing. Especially with old Victorian homes. I fucking hate seeing Victorian homes get replaced with bland, gentrified squares.

My problem with a lot of modern exterior and interior designs is, there is no room for adding on, because they're made in such a specific way that anything added to it would look oddly out of place.

      1156A_EF_t.gif

Take this victorian home for example. I could easily see myself using this as a blank canvas for interpreting my artistic vision on the house. While it's very rooted in English styles, it's neutral enough to where a change in color scheme and the addition of decorations could turn it into any style I want. That's the ethos a lot of colonial architecture in India and Vietnam take. They take a British or French base, and add on traditional elements to their liking. However, if you wanted, you could totally turn this into something modern or even futuristic looking, with the right know-how and artistic vision.

      COLUMBIA-7-MODERN-HOUSE-PLAN-MM-1837-CH-

But then you have houses like this, which you can't really do much to without it looking weird. I can't add any "old world" decorations to it because it would look massively out of place. The style is kind of forced to me minimalistic.

And yes, I get that with buildings, function matters more over aesthetics, but I do feel like there should be a balance between efficiency and artistic design. And I would at least like to see some curves and shapes that aren't rectangles. I mean, not every house can have a completely flat roof, that just doesn't fit for the climate of every place lol.

Plus, one thing I've noticed, ironically, this this new "cheap" style of architecture, is actually mainly a thing of the rich. Most of the towns I see with old-school architecture, are often the poorer parts of town (I mean, I am poor so I have lots of experience in those places lol).

But then you go to where the rich people live, and you see these people paying out the fucking ass for buildings that look so... square. So while theoretically it may be cheaper to build, the people commissioning them can afford to actually have some artistic taste.

I actually find that poor people who save up to add on to their old houses, put more effort in making it look tasteful than the rich people who just plop a fucking square anywhere, even if it looks out-of-place.

And look, if I were rich enough, I would just have my own house built in whatever architectural style I want, but sadly, I'm not. I'm disabled and lower class, so if I ever do get lucky enough to own a home, I have to work with what's given to me. All I ask is for a neutral style that I can actually work with lol. One that I could make as minimalist or as maximalist as I want.

  9. I'm considering making a blogspot for Visual Kei downloads, a-la evil-en-lucifer, because I'm gonna be real, MH is probably gonna die and those 10+ years of hard to find vkei downloads could disappear.

So I was wondering if any old-school collectors would want to help with my project.

I have a lot of Vkei CDs I inherited from my ex who doesn't like Vkei anymore, so I can start it off, but this is gonna have to be a group project.

  14. Is it just me, or do Jesse and James from Pokemon look like the kind of people who'd listen to Visual Kei in the early 90s?
I could imagine Jesse listening to X Japan and COLOR while James listens to D'erlanger and Zi:Kill.

One other trope I'd like to mention is speaking parts. This requires literally no knowledge of music theory so I can explain this fully lol. Basically, Visual Kei bands REALLY love their spoken parts. I assume this is a hand-me-down from the Japanese goth scene. Most notably, G-Schmitt songs The song CATHOLIC by G-Schmitt, which has a notable speaking part in the guitar solo, seems to have been a song that was popular among early Vkei bandmen. Popular enough for bands like Gilles De Rais, Luna Sea, Deshabillz, Missalina Rei, Dir en Grey and more to pick up on it. Why speaking parts? Well it's takes the least amount of effort, and sounds fucking cool. Initially, they were just used for intros and during certain parts, but their use eventually spread to other parts of the songs.

There are probably other people who can explain it better than I can though. What I've gathered is mostly through listening to these bands myself and noticing similarities. However, I don't know the actual music theory behind it, and I myself and hoping to learn more about that lol
  23. Himeaimichu

I was actually wondering this myself. There are a lot of cliche musical elements in 90's Visual Kei that I can easily point out, but don't know the music theory behind because I'm barely a musician. There are certain drum beats, chord progressions, scales, effects, vocal techniques, and more that have become cliche in Visual Kei. One notable example is what I call "THAT" Visual Kei chorus. It's not really one thing, but a combination of factors that come together. Mainly the drum beat and chord progession. Compare the chorus of these songs: These aren't the best examples, but they're the first that comes to my mind. From what I've seen, it seems to be a synthesis of influences from Luna Sea, G-Schmitt, BOOWY, Zi:Kill and whatnot, but I really don't know which artists made it "cool", per-se, probably Luna Sea. They don't all use the same chord progessions or drum beats, but they revolve around similar ones. Then there are the pinch harmonics. (This is where my super basic knowledge in playing guitar comes in). For those who don't know what pinch harmonics are, they're when you lightly touch the guitar string with your thumb joint while picking a note, in order to get a higher pitched sound. In Western Rock, these are referred to as "squealies" because they're often used to make high pitched squeals. In Visual Kei, however, they're used as ornaments to a riff that basically shift around the octaves of the notes. I would say this started as mainly a glam rock thing, as BOOWY implemented it occasionally in songs, such in the bridge of LIKE A CHILD (which has also influenced Vkei in other ways)
  24. It's really crazy listening to proto-kei bands like G-Schmitt and BOOWY, playing melodies and riffs that would become cliche in Visual Kei, many of them still cliches today.

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

Their music and aesthetic did influence early Vkei bands though. Like, listen to the song Catholic. Visual Kei literally partially grew from Japanese Goth bands. Obviously G-Schmitt pre-dates Visual Kei, but their music was definitely an important step. Many of the first Visual Kei musicians were goth, and probably listened to Japanese goth bands as well as your standard western goth bands.

Obviously G-Schmitt isn't full on Visual Kei, but to say they didn't influence Visual Kei at all, is really stretching it.

      少女椿

I'm afraid people who went to see late 80s post-punk liveshows or walpurgis etc events made their own post-punk/no wave bands to stay underground...  I can hear post-punk-ish rhythm and "nerve" in the very early vkei, but it disappeared too fast...

    3. carddass

      carddass

And then there's the great Auto-Mod, who had Tomoyasu Hotei on guitars before he moved on to Boowy. I always considered Auto-Mod/Genet to be the secret grandfather of visual kei. It always felt like Kiyoharu got his early warbly voice in Kuroyume more from Genet than the obvious Robert Smith. The Tribute to Auto-Mod album really drives that home with Kiyoharu's epic Deathtopia cover.

And then there's Libido who I've gotten into recently who was connected with YBO2 and the Transrecord scene of krautrock. Their songs definitely had gothic moments both aurally and visually. One of Libido's early guitarists actually was one of the founding members of G-Schmitt before moving on to other projects.
