  1. So, I just heard Lily and love it to bits. Probably should've started following these guys years ago.

Anyway, their discography is relatively large. Any pointers about where to start? Also, is Lily exclusive to the Sirius/Lily single?

  2. I was in email contact with Ryonai (Blam Honey) between 2008-2009.

He liked my music enough to include it on their final memorial album Providence of Decadence.

He also asked me for multitrack stems so he could perform my version live. I have no idea if this ever happened, although I'm pretty sure that a final live show did occur.

  3. It's really not that bad here. Compare this place to somewhere like netphoria where they tear Billy Corgan a new one every day...

There's a tendency to be jaded with the scene because it hasn't really progressed. Many newer bands are just trying to reclaim the glory of the past. But that's the point; it's a niche scene. Bands form and break up sometimes in just a matter of weeks. It's ridiculous, but that's just how it is.

I still see excitement for new releases all the time here. No clue what that person on reddit's on about.

well, since they also lack an income, they are trying to get a few bucks this way ;)

I don't know, the whole thing just seems so disingenuous. They know that they can release practically anything, slap a price tag on it and it will sell.

It's weird. A ton of human effort into making three separate demo tapes, all with unique artwork and only one track on each. Unique shirts, an umbrella, a bag, *and* a CD. It'd cost them less to simply print a full-length CD of home demos they had lying around and release that instead at a standard price. Perhaps with 10% proceeds going towards schools or the homeless. That way, more people will get to hear the music... which is the whole point of creating art, isn't it? Spreading the message as far as possible?

I'm all for supporting artists, especially lesser-known ones struggling for visibility. However, these guys (particularly Kyo) have already made it and afaik, they're beloved in the scene. To release this now in this fashion is pretty insulting to everyone.

  5. Anyone know what this CD is? Are these songs just cut from the DVDs or are they exclusive to this release?

I am, as long as my friend sticks to her promise of selling me her second copy.

That's cool. Glad that someone in this community is getting hold of it!

It’s probably just because it’s not actually anyone in DEG making this stuff.

Yes. Dir en grey/DIR EN GREY/whatever is a trademark. I'm sure there's some legal nonsense behind the scenes that we're not privy to.

Slight change of topic. Is anyone here lucky enough to be receiving the new physical single?

Arche is just the worse. Loud and sterile like the band is playing in a giant room with aluminum walls.

Actually, Arche is not as bad. It's loud but has a much cleaner sound. TIW feels like they threw overdrive over everything on top of whacking it all up to '11'.

  9. Production =/= mixing =/= mastering.

Production is song creation, choosing instruments, recording them, crafting them to get the right atmosphere for the project.

Mixing is the balance of the stems recorded for each song.

Mastering is making sure all songs across an album are balanced the same, and getting the final 'sound' of the album with effects like EQ and compression.

For example, The Insulated World is a pretty well-produced album (a little laziness in writing aside). The mix is okay, but it's absolutely destroyed by an atrocious master that makes everything sound far too compressed, creating a fatiguing listen.

This one reminds me of the Ash remake in general, and I dislike both of them in equal measure.

Yes, the only good version is from「楓」~if trans…~. Definitely.

In all seriousness, Ash 2018 is cool. All versions of Ash are cool. I'm actually glad they re-recorded it, as it meant I was able to see it live in person.

Great song forever doomed to be a b-side.

I tried listening to The Insulated World today but I just couldn't. I'm not usually too fussy about this stuff but there's a certain plastic-y sounding quality fused with the rawness of the production that gets to me more than nearly any of the other poorly produced records I enjoy on a daily basis. Production on the two most recent singles sounds just as low-fi and low effort but for some inexplicable reason I enjoy it much more.

I hope they keep this production for their next album (of course an improvement would be nice too).

That's funny. I also listened to it this morning. TIW - TWOM single - TIW bonus disc.

Although I don't think this is anywhere close to their best material, I still very much enjoyed it.

When did everyone start hating on this song? When the album came out everyone was (rightfully) dumping on Devote My Life. Did I miss a meeting or something?

Never liked CEH from even the first listen. It's the only song I still can't get into. Maybe I'm being unfair. It's... okay. I just feel that it's another loud, bleak, boring song with not much really going for it, and it bogs down the already difficult first half of the album.

I mean the worst songs have got to be either Downfall or Keibetsu to hajimari. Downfall is pretty much a heavier R to the Core (which is probably the worst song on Vulgar IMO).

    No way! Downfall is great!
