    How would you define Angura?

if your band meets at least two of the below criteria: - have your cover artwork be drawn by Suehiro Maruo - perform short skits during gigs - use melodies reminiscent of kayoukyoku in your songs - design your outfits based on school uniforms - have at least one song about (pre-/post-/mid-)WWII and/or nationalism That's it, I cracked the Angura Code™, thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.

Hello! I'm Hoshizora! I speak Japanese and English! I'm Thai and American, except I didn't start looking Thai until I was like 9 lol My birthday is May 4th, like Hiroto from Alice Nine. I don't know why, but Vkei just gives me such a good, unique feeling that nothing else can give me. It kind of feels like when you have ramen with really good narutomaki in it, or that first bite of sticky rice and mangos... but a lot better. My first J-rock band was Theatre Brook! I found out about them because I found their song "Uragiri no yuuyake" on youtube one day in September 2018. After that on December 29th, 2018 I decided I wanted to learn Japanese. I became fluent in September 2019! And here is how I got into Visual Kei: On February 23rd, 2019, my friend just decided to show me a picture of Ryuutarou Arimura, literally out of nowhere (I think we were talking about mario or something before then and she changed the topic) It was more like, as soon as I saw Ryuutarou I instantly became obsessed with him before I even heard any of his music (lol) She said the reason why she showed me the picture of him was because she said something along the lines of "I feel like this is a real life version of L, but this is really the vocalist of a band called Plastic Tree" (btw death note is the only anime ive ever watched) I was SO surprised to hear that he's 46, I expected him to be about 30, and it's not like I'm never around asians, I have a lot of Thai family, with myself having a lot of Thai blood too.. Regardless of his age I was still obsessed with him and I still showed pictures of him to my mom, all the time, even though he is like, 5 years older than her. After about...... 3 months of being obsessed with Ryuutarou, I FINALLY decided to listen to one of his songs. I'm so glad that I wasn't disappointed with them and they're actually some of the best songs I've ever heard. Now I just tell everyone in my family about Visual Kei all the time. Everyone except my dad's sister and her kids are used to it. If I showed my mom or even my grandma a girl in J-rock that actually looks like a girl, she will be like "That's a girl?" lol.. Well that is how I got into Visual Kei, lol.. and here is how to end this with my favourite J-rock bands: Plastic tree, The GazettE, X Japan, Versailles, L'Arc~en~Ciel. I of course know way more Jrock bands but those are just my favourites. Thank you for reading this and sorry if it was long! And also if you want to chat just message me, I would love to have friends here! ^^ Also feel free to ask questions

    How would you define Angura?

This came up in the visual key f#ceb##k group when someone shared an article that described several flavors of the scene, which described angura as: While I do not think that this definition is entirely wrong, per say, I do think it is lacking something that I am not really sure how to word. This isn't the scene I typically follow or engage with, but to me, it always felt like angura was vkei's edgier cousin that likes to pretend he doesn't know you in public, and saying "they wear kimonos" doesn't really cut it as the hard-and-fast defining factor. (That's why people kept tagging Kiryu as 'angura' on lastfm) Shironuri alone doesn't work either, as groups like Heidi. were considered a part of this scene, but did not do that (as far as I'm aware). Another site uses this definition: This one feels completely wrong. It seems like they're describing kote, but then listed examples that don't even match the definition they just wrote???? --- So, what's a better answer?

This RIKUGO (六合) album JYOUSAIBANKI (饒彩万輝) is freaking incredible. May end up as my favorite album this year. It's almost like someone took MUCC, Kagraa, and M and tossed them into a blender. But it has its own sense of style too. It's great.

    DAMY will disband

looks like ryo the vocalist will have a new project with their first live 12/30, for all its worth it could just be a sessions band but if you're a fan of this band it may be worth checking out. also interesting enough it seems like other damy members are playing this event but with other projects

I've seen him from afar. Not that much of a difference, just plain small asian eyes. They are actually really handsome without make up. I kinda fewl Sena feels more comfortable and confident with himself in his VK persona.

Worst To First: Dir en grey

THE MARROW OF A BONE is their worst album for me as there are not many prominent songs on it, but 艶かしき安息、躊躇いに微笑み is simply one of their most beautiful ballads ever composed. I grew up with GAUZE so it's my all time fav album of theirs whereas WtD is their masterpiece beating UROBOROS which IMO is overrated.

    How would you define Angura?

I agree with @Jigsaw9. Just basically be a Kayoukyoku or Ryukoka Vkei band that wears uniforms and is obsessed with Eroguro, Much like actual Ryukoka and Enka artists in the 1920's (From what I've read), Eroguro was pretty popular and influential to the Japanese music scene in the early 20th century. I've even found a Japanese Kayoukyoku collection CD that was titled "Ero Guro Nansensu" for sale on CD Japan or something once. So I would define it by bands such as Guruguru Eigakan, Inugami Circus Dan, etc. Although Inugami has less Kayoukyoku influence, they're basically part of Angura by association. However, I do agree there is a lot of traditional Japanese elements, but it's not the same elements that Kiryu or Memento Mori use. In general, Kayoukyoku, Ryukoka and Enka music is just traditional Japanese music, but on western instruments. It's more of the general nature of the music they play. During the era where these genres were popular, Traditional Japanese Music hadn't declined yet, and it was still popular to listen to Shamisen and Koto music, so it's natural that a lot of that kind of music would influence the popular genres. Bands like Kiryu however are more influenced by straight up traditional Japanese music, and its reflected in how they write their music. Although I've heard the term "Chikashitsu Kei" to refer to Guruguru and Inugami, idk how proper of a term that is.
