It was only a matter of time before I created this thread lol so here we are. City Pop, also known/seen as シティーポップ (shitī poppu) online, is the name given to the fusion genre of funk/disco/jazz/easy-listening music that existed in Japan from the late 70's and well into the 80's, where it became the national soundtrack of the times, providing an urban expression to the success and wonders of the city-life. Japan at this time was thriving due to the technological advancements during the 70's that allowed Japan's economy to explode when it came to exportation of consumer electronics and more, essentially making them a conglomerate for tech in the next decade that followed, and creating what many refer to as an "economic miracle", yet to be seen again today. Here are several articles I've saved over the years if you'd like to know more: The Musical Almanac: Japan’s City-Pop The Breathless Bliss of City Pop A Dreamy Trip back to Japans Capitalist Fantasy of the 1980s A Guide to City Pop, the Soundtrack for Japan’s Bubble-Era Generation The recent return of the genre state-side (we're always late to this stuff) by a number of DJs on YouTube, SoundCloud, and even Band Camp have given City Pop a breath of new life, and the reception has been so great that studios existing back then have since remastered and re-released albums (even on vinyl) for collectors and new fans alike. Edit: According to @colorful人生: Very Cool! While City Pop predates the surge of JPOP in the 90's and can be seen as one genre as a whole, I felt that City Pop deserved its own thread as the number of releases that spanned the 70's-80's are ENDLESS, and even today new music artists utilize/associate the music genre to their own work, so it's safe to make the distinction between the two. Now I don't have a starter-pack for those looking to get into the genre, but I've listened to a major chunk of the releases online to give a great recommendations list for those curious. These releases are easily available on YouTube, are varied in musical style and year of release, and they were some of the first listens for me when I got started, so hopefully at least one of them will interest you guys. (ラジ) Rajie - Heart to Heart (1977) (山下 達郎)Tatsuro Yamashita - SPACY (1977) (みき松原 ) Miki Matsubara - Pocket Park (1980) (貴子間宮)Takako Mamiya - Love Trip (1982) (パイパー) Piper - Summer Breeze (1983) (知子亜蘭) Tomoko Aran - More Relax (1984) (敏生角松)Toshiki Kadomatsu - After 5 Clash (1984) (桃子菊池) Momoko Kikuchi - Adventure (1986) (明菜中森) Akina Nakamori - Stock (1988) NOTE: That being said, there are still many artists to check out, so here's are a few more names for you to search for in your spare time. I'll come back and update this (took a couple days to put together lol) with more recommendations when I can. So who else here listens to these J-Oldies?

tbh it's really not that bad of an idea to crowd fund releases or events, so long as they come through and actually happen. In this case, he's also bringing a team of people with him and isn't going to be sleeping on Whirling Black's couch (I think?) and that's pretty expensive. On top of that, it seems like he's organizing this on his own and isn't relying on some glue-sniffing promoter to fuck up the day of

Hey guys, I'm moving to a different country, and I can't take most of my VK collection, even though I spent many years & money acquiring them. So I'd rather give away a bunch of these stuff for cheap to people who care about VK than throw them away. I live in New York right now (leaving September 1). If you're in the area and want to come pick up some stuff, just let me know. If you live somewhere else, tell me which stuff you want, how much you want to pay for them, how you want them shipped, and please pay for the shipping. PM me if you're interested. I'm really giving these away for any price you're willing to pay. I have cocklobin merch (A LOT of them), Sugar, Time Section, dummy-xD, amber gris, Moran, Merry, Plastic Tree (book), and a bunch of magazines. Also some manga if you want them. Sorry, I can't list them in details since I'm kind of in a hurry to move.

    Favorite Matina band?

Lots of nice stuff on Matina so it's not an easy pick, but I'd probably go with: Madeth gray'll MIRAGE (first period) Sense of Shape LAYBIAL Distray Lagna Honorable mentions: AZALEA, オルゴール (Orgel), Lumi/Ere, Eze:quL, DAS:VASSER

yeah, I only heard it on my shitty bluetooth earpiece for now, but I can totally hear your inside beast comparisons in full now XD tbh I breathed with relief when I heard the piano lol although on the other hand, it's a bit ridiculous to make judgments on a band based on 2 studio singles (+one unheard as of yet) and a bunch of live releases so I decided to chill naaah, I get it and I do hear a difference as well but as I've said above, bit premature to judge ^^

Actually if let me tell the truth, from the preview for 3rd single and this 15 seconds preview. They are all a bit "ordinary", nothing really stick me like other releases! But judging from the previews is premature and too soon to tell! Haha, and don't worry, it's just my own feeling the sounds are a bit different! I don't think they change their direction though! So just let the musics speak!

    Favorite Matina band?

Madeth gray'll is by far my favorite. Actually, except for them I can't really recall any other outstanding band, they all just kinda blend together for me (or I just haven't listened to them enough). Vice†risk and Mëbius were cool too, I guess.

Oh! I'm surprised to see MIYA in a VK band. He was mutual friend with my bandman friends so we used to go to see their concerts and dinnering together. He was very nice and funny but played in an weird not vk underground band. Hope he gets some popularity, he's a nice guy

This goes into the whole Plastic Love phenomenon (w/ some detours into meme culture), but 6:20~ish on can be extrapolated to a lot of the city pop resurgence. I go a bit more into Future Funk on the vaporwave thread. While vaporwave and ff have moved away from the spotlight, city pop is picking back up again thanks to DJ Van Paugam and the like. I'll also add that 4chan has had city pop discussions since forever on /mu/, /gif/, and /wsg/. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the proto-stuff was influenced from that existing circulation. Though they were initially pretty critical of Ramona Xavier/Vektroid/Macintosh Plus' Floral Shoppe in 2012.

I love this genre and shooketh didn't find it earlier. So, I am thankful for the resurgence with the whole vaporwave aesthetic.

    R/O

    Hello from R/O!

Not really “one” band, to be honest. First a friend recommended Diru, which I liked, but I didn’t go and look for other bands. Then I had an internet run-in with some of those X-Japan fangirls, and decided to see what the fuss was all about. At about the same time, the aforementioned friend recommended the first two songs on Merveilles to me, and I liked them but it all kinda fell by the wayside. And then, months later, I decided to listen to the rest of MM’s discography. Let’s just say I’m mildly obsessed with them now.

As I'm working in aviation myself I'm mostly watching explanation videos about all kind of stuff related to planes. Those two channels are my favorite atm. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC88tlMjiS7kf8uhPWyBTn_A https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwpHKudUkP5tNgmMdexB3ow I also like to watch documentaries about crashes and other accidents and the following investigations 🤷‍♀️

Agreed! They truly are amazing and much more genuine compared to other bands in the scene imo, less produced and cookie-cutter... they do have some deal with Kerberos Entertainment when it comes to music distribution, but the advertising for them is definitely not enough though sadly... As for the member thing, it's true that they "lost members" but that's because anyone but Arma and Takeru are support members... so like, everyone is free to leave whenever, while CLACK inc. is gonna continue as long as the two minds behind the project want to. That is to say that there's really no drama involved when the other members are leaving, they're all on good terms, for example, recently Tsubaki (now in RIR) has filled Arma's spot last minute at a live^^ I really really like the current line-up, therefore I hope it's gonna last as long as possible ><

Yeah, Zenitsu and Inosuke can be a bit grating. I'm not sure if the manga is the same, but the comic relief from these two honestly seem a bit forced and grating at times. But yeah, outside of that, I've really been enjoying this. I thought the show was kinda cool at first, but this whole arc with them going up the mountain has really started to hook me. From a sheer production point -> the animation, the effects, the score, the music direction - everything has been AMAZING. I mean....BRUHHHHH. I got chills during that scene where Tanjiro beheaded Rui. The team behind this is something else, and i'm looking forward to experience what else they have in store.

    Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!

That whole album was recorded on $10 earplugs Die picked up at the corner store. Someone passed me a copy of The Insulated World that they did where they adjusted a few things and the end result was so much better. Not good enough to fundamentally change opinions on the album, but enough to make me wonder why that wasn't done before the album was pressed. It only took ten minutes! For fuck's sake, if I can sit down and take a compressed MP3 version of the track and make it sound better than the studio master, there's a problem with the production part of the pipeline. Do any of their ears work? I haven't revisited the album since I got this copy, since tracks like "Devote my Life" hurt to listen to, and I still think the second half of the album is stronger than the first half, so in essence I guess I agree with your hot take??? Despite my high end equipment, I'm also terrible at noticing these problems in the moment, but I can very easily A-B them if someone gives me a cleaned up version, so if I start noticing issues almost instantly then that's real bad. Real good example of how ignorance is bliss.
  44. 1 point
I understood you! I do agree with the fact that we barely have time to breathe and enjoy each release. Hell, I've barely listened to anything from them thoroughly since Noroi Uta lmao I just think it's better to keep churning out releases for as long as they can. Bands life spans are so short that I don't mind getting a shit ton of music in a short period. It's not like I won't have the time to enjoy it throughout the year, you know.
