Open-mindedness comes with exposure, and it's necessary to know what you're looking for, musically, to grow those sensibilities. Music is interpreted differently from person-to-person. Melody, texture, rhythm, lyricism, etc. or any combination of the musical elements contribute to one's enjoyment, and they all exist on a really wide spectrum. Upbringing and culture + How your enjoyment could stem from different memories, places, etc. There are so many variables to consider, but those same qualities I've mentioned could be extrapolated to other aspects of life. "Music is not so different to life", as Herbie Hancock puts it. The same problem you have with people lacking open-mindedness is not asimilar to categorizing or compartmentalizing those who aren't open-minded. Binary thinking runs rampant on the internet and irl, but if you approach topics gingerly you'd be surprised how many people want to listen. Just don't try to push it with those unwilling. For us on a music forum, it might be hard for some to think this way, but music is just like every other artistic medium. My fine art "repertoire" is not very large as paintings don't really retain my interest atm. Someone's interest in music is the same. It could be in its infancy and might grow in the future, or they let it be because that's not what inspires/intrigues them. Many people have music "tunnel vision", and I've gone through it myself. I think the internet which plays the largest role in "The Shrinking World", has been pivotal in increasing open-mindedness regarding diff. cultures and by extension, music. So, I think it'll get better, but for now I just let people like whatever they want ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Both parties should be respectful about it, obv. The internet will always have stuck up people b/c it reflects life (w/ some added anonymity.)

I always find people who listen to only certain genres, and don't give chance to another genres before saying they don't like it, really annoys me. I understand if someone don't listen to certain artists, but to shun the whole genre associated with that artist are absurd. There are dozens more artists that doing their own thing in the same genre, and I find it impossible not one of them they may find interesting. I could never understand the way these people think. Options are there to enrich you. I find many talented artists are actually having such eclectic taste, but the irony is that some of their fans are not like that. And that's dumb to me. So that is my issue, the genre elitists and purist.

Saw Miyavi last night. It was a lot of fun! I got there at 12:30pm (Haha standing in line early life), and then did the VIP session at 6. I was 2nd in line, and met up with friends I haven't seen in years. Miyavi put on a really great show, I was 3 feet from him the entire time, I got front and center against the barrier! I enjoyed his performance a lot, and it was a wonderful experience to see him again, it's been too long. The only downside was that the venue didn't offer us water, or have water available for us, which is very strange, since every other venue I have been to offered water or had it available before/after the show for purchase. So I was dead after the concert, and super dehydrated from jumping around and headbanging lol. But it was great! Would do it again. A+ good show.

I don't know where to put this. If it doesn't belong here, move it. Music is a form that everyone can enjoy, but sometimes, people just don't try new things. From my experience, there are two types of close minded music fans: 1. The Lazy Ones These are the ones who either listen to the same three artists or just listen to the same Top 40 hits the radio plays all day. I'm okay with people having certain artists they enjoy and that's fine, but I find that people who just stick with one or two genres of music aren't really that open. Sure, you can like and dislike certain genre's and that's totally cool, but the ones that refuse to listen to any other artist instead of the ones they only listen to I find are not necessarily boring people, but they're just lazy I suppose lol. 2. The "Wrong Generation" Now these guys are the ones you see on the YouTube comments section of every classic rock video. You know them very well. They act like all modern music sucks nowadays and that their music is superior. They constantly remind you how much of today's music is just garbage rap and that there is no good music. They lie in their own bubble of ignorance and bitterness. These are the ones that constantly praise bands like Black Sabbath or Queen and tell you about how they are the greatest bands of all time and that they write "meaningful" lyrics instead of G U C C I G A N G. I'll admit I used to be like the second one, albeit with metal instead of classic rock. However, I eventually opened up to all sorts of music with Visual Kei expanding my tastes further. Does anyone have any experiences with people like the ones I mentioned? What would you say to close minded fans of music if you ever met one?

I think there's also a time factor, in my case I only listen to Japanese music nowadays, any genre within Japanese music (pop, edm, rock, visual kei), newer western music has disappointed, and it's not like I have a lot of free time to listen more of it, i am busy with work and family, therefore japanese music is that has proven to be the best for me, so I only listen to that and don't waste my time with music from other countries xD even if people hate me for that or think i'm close minded or whatever, that's their problem, i am happy the way i am and if the other people have a lot of free time to worry about what I listen or not listen to, then they should be very happy to have enough free time for that LOL. Just to give an example.

I just dislike the general I don't like X music, because Y music is superior and you just don't understand because you're a pleb. Or the constant bashing on pop music in any kind by "Rock/Metal" fans. If people opened up their mind to other music whole heartedly, they'd find more enjoyment than just listening to a genre a music. Constantly listening to only a certain genre after a while grates my nerves. Hell, I didnt think I'd like Nu-Metal, and then I found my current favorite band, and their sound in the beginning was Nu-Metal oriented(they since ventured off into different directions), and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have open the possibility of trying more bands affiliated with that genre or gave them a chance.

    The big TV-series discussion thread

Finished Stranger Things season 3 as soon as I got home from vacation and thought it was exceptional, like its previous 2 seasons. My favourite thing about the series is how it manages to keep the nostalgia and feeling from season 1 alive, while going in a whole new and different direction. Did this with season 2 as well. Absolutely amazing. Best series ever? Probably. Top 3 for sure! Btw, the new female characters where all amazing. Both Robin and Erica works really well. Especially Erica. Witty, smart and snappy(?). Gotta love that. Fantastic portrayal too, which is the key for a character like this. Managed to never become annoying, even though in most cases she would be annoying as fuck. Impressive! Highlight of the season? Steve and Dustin, man. That chemistry is FIRE!!! 10/10! Series as a whole? 10/10! Give me 5414675413541354165415614 more seasons plz!

I find the "wrong generation" ones more annoying than the lazy ones. Mostly because any era, genre, country of origin and so on has it's own load of crappy music that doesn't reach most people or gets forgotten. There's no era that's truly the best.

    random thoughts thread

My mood has been cratering for the last two weeks and it's getting to the point where people around me can tell. I've untangled some of the reasons why I've been unhappy and it has to do with a lot of the well-meaning things people advise me to do that I take the wrong way. They always come off as suggestions for what to do but how are you suggesting solutions to the problem I haven't explained yet? I'm mentally exhausted when I come home and I do not want to do more programming, fix computers on the side, sell weed, take even more classes after I've finished grad school, earn a license, or start my own business. Those aren't answers; those are distractions. I don't have faith in the capitalist system, so I don't want to look for a "new job". It'll be the same bullshit as the old job in a different sector for as long as programmers are underappreciated and treated as simple code to caffeine converters. I don't like working to line someone else's pockets, and the assertion that one must work for a living is troubling, and also at odds with the depths of laziness some coworkers descend to daily. You can't tell me work harder to find purpose and be happy when business analysts are laughing their asses off on their third Starbucks break of the day. I just gave a 40 minute presentation I didn't feel like giving and certain team members fell asleep, and I got so dejected the secretary at the front sent an e-mail to my manager and her boss because I couldn't find it within me to bother. In fact, I find the assertion that one must better themselves to find happiness at all is full of troubling assumptions about my values. I work hard and I'm not happy, working harder makes me unhappier, and when I come home I'm a zombie and I don't want to do anything. I haven't listened to new music outside of the mix tapes I've been given. Haven't played any new games since I bought em. My Switch is docked up to my TV and remains untouched. Don't even want to watch YouTube videos and that requires me to only pay attention. I'm kinda just walking through life trying to make it to the next day waiting for it to end. Depression is a bitch. If you are wondering why I've been quiet these last few weeks and not writing or doing much of anything, that's why.

This makes literally no sense whatsoever. How is something like Uroboros, Dum Spiro Spero, Arche and The Insulated World any more copied from American/European metal bands than The Marrow of a Bone? With Uroboros (and the later stuff) they actually started doing something quite fresh and new, and it's actually pretty far from copying any american or european metal I've heard, and I've heard quite a lot. The same can honestly not be said about The Marrow of a Bone which is by far their most american metal-sounding album to date. Btw, I can't stand The Marrow of a Bone, Dum Spiro Spero, Arche and The Insulated World. Arche and The Insulated World have a handful of good tracks combined between them, but as a whole both albums suck. But not nearly as much as The Marrow of a Bone. Top 3 worst albums I've ever heard for sure.

I agree with you, to a point. Feminism is, or at least its supposed to be advocating for equality not superiority of one sex over the other. That said, raising awareness and combating the abuse that men suffer, especially at the hands of women, is a part of the movement. The risk of humiliation and not being seen as "man enough" is a byproduct of toxic masculinity (a buzzword i know) which is a big topic in feminism. The fact that society unfairly favours women over men in custody battles, is similarily hundred years of harmful stereotypes stacked on top of each other. I don't think we should villanize the whole movement, because mainstream media chooses to only expose the worst of it, because that what gets the views. Now what is said on the video, is not precisely that more women become abusers, but more men report the abuse. Which all in all, is a good thing?

I had the impression the new singles were going to be continuing the new arc of the Emigre storyline, since he played some of them last night and will play more here and there on the upcoming tour. In Sang, the Emigre energy source system as introduced by Louis and the Count Saint Germain avoided a lot of social problems in Japan by limiting applicants to senior citizens. In this new arc, from the concert & pamphlet last night, the USA is about to implement the Emigre system, but enrollment is compulsory. Just before the law is officially ratified, the DOE secretary and his wife are mysteriously assassinated. Now some vigilant NSA agents are investigating. What will they discover? Tune in to the next live to find out... (I can’t go though) One of the new songs, like Eye of Providence, is in a symphonic metal style. There was another one that had a kind of similar vibe to Ecstasy, with a steady, powerful, sexy rhythm; but where Ecstasy has a lot of electronic elements layered in the arrangement, this unreleased one is more of a straightforward 4-member rock band sound. (Edit: at the end of this one, flashpots exploded on stage as the car bomb assassination happened in the story. So, that kind of song.) The last unreleased song was a ballad.
