The album "TABOO" was released in 1989, exactly 30 years ago today (18th January)! One of the most excellent old-school J-rock albums imo with many great highlights such as ICONOCLASM, ANGELIC CONVERSATION or JUST ONE MORE KISS. My favorites are TOKYO and FEAST OF DEMORALIZATION tho (the latter being one of only two songs whose lyrics Toll wrote in B-T history!). What are your faves from the album?

Another chapter has been written and filed away into the ever growing library of visual kei history, so we resume our customary annual review of all of the great albums that saw the light of day in 2018. Unlike previous years, we elected to wait until the middle of January so the stragglers of the year had their fair chance to weigh in. This list is also not in any specific order, although DIMLIM's CHEDOARA deserves a mention for getting the most votes internally and therefore kicks the list off with a bang. Even in our most challenging years, there's always something fresh and new around the corner waiting to be discovered. Like always, this isn't an exhaustive list and plenty of the hidden gems slip through the cracks, so if you have anything to add to the list tack it on at the end so the entire community can find something new to enjoy. Haha, I can get that...usually I can't stand Engrish either (most especially in rock/metal) but somehow knowing what an influence David Bowie had on Atsushi, I dunno somehow makes it feel endearing instead of forced? Not sure if that makes sense. Just like THE IMMORTAL live, addressing the audience almost entirely in English making an atmosphere of a real punk-goth live. (I think B-T / etc is the only place I've made an exception 😂)

I may be alone here, but EMBYO. It's just such a Sakurai song, it's truly cool how we can see the continuity of his lyrical themes from back then, and EMBYO is in some ways more powerful for being so direct too. Then ICONOCLASM is the classic, though I prefer the rerecording.

SILENT NIGHT (even though I can hardly listen through, cause, sad), TABOO, and JUST ONE MORE KISS, honestly I prefer this album on live.

^ I feel ya, sometimes I feel like JUST ONE MORE KISS is too syrupy and upbeat for my liking, haha. The music video is perfectly cheesy tho.

All the recent live footage that’s on the internet is fucking awesome. Anyway, Adoratio is imo the best vk album of 2015-2019 so far so it’ll be golden in any shape or form

Amazing album! I wouldn't have realized today marked it's 30th if you hadn't posted, about to go listen to it in a bit. I may be an outlier, but I can't stand JUST ONE MORE KISS, something about it always made me uncomfortable lol. The rest of this album is great tho, with my favorites being ICONOCLASM, TOKYO and TABOO.

One of the first songs that got stuck in my head years ago was actually リンチ from 第3実験室, really dig that sucker. But their discography is so extensive that it's good to have some direction, so thanks a lot for the recommendations! I've already enjoyed 10 quite a bit actually, so I guess I'll continue with the other albums you mentioned 😁

@karai · ebi I gotta confess, I could never take SILENT NIGHT seriously because of the Engrish (so I have a bit of a different experience with it), lol. @crossparallel EMBRYO is a cool track! I love ICONOCLASM to bits, it's interesting to read some ppl prefer the rerecording. I've always adored the original, and come to think of it, I have to think really hard to find a rerecording by B-T that I like more than the original... tho the duo of the rerec'd TABOO and HYPER LOVE is pretty awesome, especially live!

Welcome to the 'gari family~ 8D Yeah, I agree that 14 isn't too hot, at least compared to some of their other recent stuff. シャ.ナ.ナ is from the "10" album so if you enjoy that type of sound you can't go wrong with that album! You can find a bit of a similar vibe on the album "8" and the mini album "≠" (released after "10"), too.

I'm a little ashamed to admit that much like BUCK-TICK, cali≠gari has always been one of those bands that I download every new release of and then it's just sitting on my hard drive like a useless piece of furniture that I don't know what to do with but also don't want to throw away because it might be good for something someday. In the case of cali≠gari, that day has finally come. With the release of their new album I finally sampled some songs from their past couple of albums and something just clicked (initially while listening to a live version of シャ.ナ.ナ which has been stuck in my head ever since). I'll still have to work my way further through their catalogue but I feel like I finally "get them", I guess. Having said that, I didn't get much enjoyment out of 14, except for maybe three songs: 天国で待ってる for its upbeat quirkiness and fun bassline, いつか花は咲くだろう for its mellow, airy vibe and most notably 死は眠りを散歩する for its groove and suspenseful structure and flow.

I like what you got out of it with GIMP...it made it look like an encaustic.

I need somebody to share with my love for this song, because I just can't stop to move my legs to the rythm and if this continues I won't be able to finish my research paper lol Interesting fact: the credits for the music are to SHINYA, who will be also credited for the music of "Yurameki" a few months after, another classic of Dir that shares with this song the same syncopathed guitars' groove that makes one easily recall Eden-era Luna Sea.

It's pretty clear they've been struggling for quite a long time. Production on most of their recorded music has been spotty at best. Waka sounds great at least, she has real talent.

I'm loving this band. They give me serious Da'vid shito:aL vibes with their concept (though more aggressive music most of the time) and I stan for days....weeks...possibly years.

I don't always listen to Matenrou Opera, but when I do it's this gem 💖 Loving that they're still around, now I'm going to have to play catch up to everything released since ANOMIE.

This makes me extremely sad. I am their fan since 2008, saw them live two times and now miku is the only person who left in the band... But there's a little hope because it's not disband already, but it's hiatus. If they will become another SERIAL NUMBER changing members million times it will be not nice.

I'll give this a go. I'd say that 12012's XII Mini-Album would best represent Monochrome Heaven to me. "Timeless", would be the word I'd use to describe the connection to the two. No matter how long time goes by, neither one will leave my memories. To think, each member put a piece of themselves into a final composition for each track, just like we all do for this site everyday. To some, it was a polished POS. To myself on the other hand, it was one of VK's greatest gems. Oh, the memories of telling people to go fuck themselves. Seems like just yesterday.....
