I’m gonna make a increasingly rare note here just to endorse the new members. Kanta is indeed incredibly skilled with a lot of experience. Aisaku is also practicing guitar 10 hours a day pretty much everyday because he wants to be a solid members. so I hope everyone will cheer them on and support them.

Reading this made me re-listen to OZ and damn I miss his voice, Natsuki is part of the few vocalist that I wish would have not retired but if he's happier like this it's better I guess, nice to see his face after such a long time!

Origin of growling in visual kei?

That can be an interesting discussion, that's for sure. I would say that even old-school j-rock bands tried to use some screaming - Aliene Marriage for example. If you listen to many obscure bands from 1998-2003, you will find plenty of weak growls (more like shrieks even). From relativily popular bands - early Vidoll, the Gazette. Moving to modern times - once emo-style and metalcore sound was becoming popular, it surely influenced jrock scene. To me, one of the most early examples was -OZ- with their Cry the Crime and Zenith. I believe, it was 2006. In comparison with the bands that I mentioned above, Natsuki used his harsh vocals more often and extensvely. We also have early Deathgaze from 2004, D'espairs Ray, Gemmik, to name a few. And Unsraw with their debut single. Yeah, it seems like 2005-2006 is when screams and growls were becoming the thing. I hope some senior contributors from MH, like @zeus or other guys who were in jrock community for around 10-15 years would contribute to this discussion)

Honestly it was me who introduced him and recommended him. so I personally am really vouching for him. he is extremely dedicated and a lot more hard working than he seems.

He is (was?) in the non-visual metalcore band Chain Disaster and has done support for several bands such as RagDöllz and ONYX.

SHHH! Don't you know that if you say a band man's name three times they can never return to the land of visual kei1?!?! In all seriousness though, -OZ- was one of those bands that I thought was at the "top" of the indie circuit. Learning that farming avocados is more consistent and lucrative than being an indie visual kei band man is a sobering feeling...

well, they've managed to stick around for what, nearly 10 years? not too bad of a run for a VK band. still, kind of unfortunate, they were generally pretty fun

This documentary is so good! It's so insightful in to the evolution of Super Smash Bros. Melee as a competitive game, and how it's evolved. It talks about how Brawl failed to shift the focus from Melee in the competitive scene, and how Nintendo refused to accept that Super Smash Bros was nothing more than a party game for casual gamers. This is a must watch, even if its 4 hours 18 minutes long! It sucks that I was only 4 years old in 2001, the year Melee was released, and 9 in 2006 when Melee peaked because if I was older, I'd have definitely jumped on the hype train where the competitive scene was headed!

    Early Dir en grey influences

Oh, also, I noticed Garden also has a lot of influence from "Under..." by Kuroyume. Hell, that song could probably be considered one of the most influential songs of 90's Visual Kei

    Early Dir en grey influences

Kaoru's first band, DIE:STERIA, was a cover band in high school that played X Japan, Kamaitachi, Zi:Kill and Boowy songs. I think Shinya also said that Zi:Kill really influenced his drumming style. The entire name of Dir en Grey was taken from a Lareine song called Dir en Gray (Supposedly, Kamijo told them to use the name), which in turn, was taken from a band from the early 90's called Dir&Gray, an obscure band whose vocalist would later sing for Kneuklid Romance, and whose guitarist would be a roadie for Zi:Kill. Personally, I don't think any of these are plagiarism, knowing the Visual Kei scene. It's more acceptable in the Vkei scene to do covers of songs like that, than it is in other music scenes. I think of it like sampling in old school Hip Hop.

    Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!

Most visual kei vocalists are terrible. Apparently, that's also an unpopular opinion. I am aware of the fact, that not all visual kei singers are bad. But most really are. Especially in the indie vk sector you will find terrible vocalists who ruin the actually decent or good music. I am one of those people who like "crappy" old indie vk bands. Of course I also enjoy the "better" bands of the era, such as Luna Sea, Rouage, Laputa, Pierrot and Co. and I'd say that their vocalists are not terrible but still an aquired taste. What I like about visual rock the most are not directly the vocals (as they are often craptastic) or lyrics (as I can't understand them), but the music and overall concept and the overall atmosphere a band creates. Though I admit that a lot bands actually get their interesting and unique sound because of their singers. I couldn't imagine Madeth gray'll being as awesome and dark as they are if Hisui would hit every note. What puts me off of modern visual bands are the Metalcore influences. I have already mentioned this in the biggest crimes of japanese music thread, that I find it unbearable to listen to visual kei singers trying to growl when they have totally no clue how it's properly done. It fucking hurts to listen to and it does not make me wonder why visual kei singers suffer so often from problems with their voice or vocal chords. I know vocal training lessons are expensive and take time... but vk bands should really invest more into it if they don't want to risk their vocalits to damage their voice for ever. Also I don't like the way most of these bands (including Mejibray) sing. I am more found of clear singing or the way old vk bands have screamed. So it's more personal taste than anything. But I agree that Tsusuku's voice isn't that well and he sounds like any other neo visual kei singer trying to growl or scream. Maybe I am not good at hearing, but for me D.I.D, Mejibray and Co. sound exactly the same (especially style-wise).

That is so cool. 👏👏👏 Farmer Natsuki. Esp since Avocado is popular fruit there. Probably more steady flow of income too than being indie bandomen 👌 Also, apparently his real name is Kunihito Sekine (関根邦仁)
