Excuse the cringey name; I used to draw a lot when I was a kid, especially in my preteen years when I doodled my "DoodleZ" daily, whether it was on my notebook paper or on my homework. After high school though, my passion started to die down as I lost confidence in myself, even when I took art class in college and got to experience new things such as painting and gridding. Now, I've had the itch to draw again; it's an ongoing progress, but I'm really eager to draw again, and I want to start that off with vk portraits x) I remember having a lot of fun with those in art class. But I would like to do something bigger and better someday, like maybe do more than just a sketch...by painting it too~ But enough of my yammering, I'm here to post some doodles that I've done before, or have done recently. Kyouki (Grieva) (2014) I would like to finish this one Sui/Misery/Yushi (Megaromania/Lin) (2014) *Outlined with sharpie, so it looks shitty

I found this thread really interesting to read through and see everyone's take on this topic. I'm replying to these quotes because it spotlights just how different the desires in a live concert experience are from male and female fans. Despite what some people (like the above quoted) consider to be normal and expect everyone would want from a concert, I'm here to say that the things Inertia and Komo mentioned as being bad are exactly what I want from a great live experience. Not all male fans are like this, but I think this is a really common mindset for men. It's why a bunch of dudes who have never met each other can pile up in a cramped hot space and push the shit out of each other for a couple hours and leave with a big smile on their face, excited for the next time. I can't tell you how many times I've like shook someone's hand after a show or shared some acknowledging eye contact and nod with someone while leaving a venue after a night of moshing. The bond you have with those people is absurdly strong after the night. And why? It sounds silly, but its because you all got crushed, hit, pushed, soaked in sweat (if not yours, from someone else), and gave every ounce of energy you had while listening to some of your favorite music. It's simply cathartic. It's not really a matter of lacking courtesy (or atleast not intentionally). The rough nature of a lot of predominantly male lives is because there's an unspoken agreement that most people WANT that kind of atmosphere (though obviously a lot of female fans want something different). I can guarantee you I'm always the skinniest/lightest dude in the pit. It's hilarious how little control I have and how far I will fly when pushed, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The best concert experiences for me always end sweaty, bruised, unable to speak, and feeling like I've just ran a marathon. When you find a show where everyone is on this same level, prepared to use up all of their spirit to making this experience count, you have something crazy magical. And a strong sense of unity comes from having been through that together with other people who were looking for the same thing.

Yeah it's cool that a bunch of 40+ year old men can release music that sounds more inspired then 99% of what the new younger crowd can put out. Similar to how Swans 2010s output is better then pretty much all modern rock music despite the man behind it all being 60 years old. Gibkiy give me Swans vibes as well.

what about their stuff as highfashionparalyze? (it's the same fucking band idc what vkdb tells you ok) this project got much better when they balanced improv/compositions further towards compositions imo the nagoya kei true fan initiation is going to see gibkiy live and having kazuma blast all the microscopic hairs out of your ear canal by blowing a whistle at full force into the mic

I can't stop listening to the Samidare cover. I've been looping it solely for two days in a row. lolz. The original song is from MUCC, but the arrangement is definitely the pre-13's reborn Girugamesh style. At this rate, their disbandment is even sadder because they still have the potential to compose music this good. Come back already!

    Japanese Vinyl Records

Temporary Residence has some great pressings of ENVY and MONO for people looking for their back catalogs. Topshelf doesn't stop at MotKs and toe, they also have LITE (I have the LITE/MotKs split and it's lovely) and tricot. But if we're including Japanese pressings.... I've also bought MUCC, the fin., and Crystal Lake albums recently from CDJapan of all places.

Hello, This has been going on for a little while now, but many people are discussing in various places so I decided to make a thread. Nocturnal Bloodlust has also issued warnings on Youtube, and filed violations on users, stating that they will sue all culprits, etc... I would like to share some quotes from Otaking, Co-Creator of Gainax and Evangelion, amongst other works: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2012-04-21/gainax-co-founder-okada-shares-thoughts-on-illegal-copying There is also another quote I remember from the Gurren Lagann era, where one Gainax employee stated: We don`t pay much mind to people wanting to illegally download our product, we focus more on making a product so good that fans will want to buy it. IMO unlike even anime, VK and other Japanese music isn`t structured in a way that permits fans to find it, get into it, or become fans without illegally downloading sometimes large amounts of music. It is a complex situation, but removing all downloads and unauthorized videos online will only harm the industry at this point. There is more I would like to say, but I will just post the most pertinent of my current thoughts at the moment. And yes, although I buy all my music, I still believe downloading is the only way Japanese music stays Internationally somewhat known atm. Thanks for reading.

Yeah I've been more active lately and I've noticed that too. The place only blows up when a long awaited release is uploaded. lol For the most part anyway. Can you let @Zeus know? And maybe he'll do this anyway with 23 likes. lol I hope so I really wanted this again for years now. I personally think it's a good way to help bring in new members and also preserve a little history of J-rock and I also think it would flow well with the staff reviews and monthly recommended tracks. lol But what do I know? Anyway @platysince you're a mod will you relay everything I just said to the staff as a final plea? Especially @Zeus

    MERRY (f.k.a メリー)

I love what they did with Ieji! It really shows off what they can do and the acoustic bits are simply dreamy. I also love that song and think it's a great choice. My favourite cover has to be オデッセイ・1985・SEX. Gara just slays that one, you can tell he was living his dream.

    MERRY (f.k.a メリー)

Have you guys listened to MERRY's version of 家路 yet? And if you did, did you like it? Personally, I really liked it. It's one of the highlights of the MUCC tribute album for me. That got me thinking that with all the stuff MERRY released in 2017, we finally have enough material for an entire MERRY album of covers from other artists. That's quite a lot! I think only MUCC got them beat for "official" studio version covers. At least as far as V系 bands go. There's also the debatable inclusion of シャ乱Q's 上・京・物・語, but that one doesn't count, right? Anyway, which one is your favorite cover version? Which ones do you dislike? Personally, I think it's reallyyyy hard to beat 伊勢佐木町ブルース, but I love 新宿ナナ and オデッセイ・1985・SEX. The ones I'm not really hot about are Strength Beyond Strength and Schweinの椅子, and I think that's about it. MERRY usually does really well performing other people's songs. I kinda wish they did even more covers, MERRY almost always leave their personal mark and that's pretty cool. The next single could use a brand new b-side and another old-school cover.

I think that this situation sort of showcases the discrepancy between the western and Japanese fandom, in some ways. We in the west have sort of built up our own subculture surrounding VK that isn't the same as it is in Japan. In Japan, attending VK lives can have connotations that a lot of guys would want to avoid, the informal rules surrounding the lives can also make the shows less enjoyable to men too, as in the whole staying put in your spot, allowing time and space for the girls to fix their hair between each headbang and stuff like that. The western VK fandom treats it more like any other alternative subculture whereas I feel like in Japan it has unhealthy connections with the host ideals. I went to a VK bar in Tokyo and talked to the bartender and he said that the regular girls scared away other customers on the weekends by refusing to let him serve others, since they "paid for his company" by buying drinks, and they would demand from him to play only the one band they listen to the entire night. I think for a lot of guys who are into VK, most Japanese men who are into VK are CD-only by the way, as in they don't attend the shows but just buy the music from stores and might occasionally show up to onemans and stand in the back, this doesn't create a fun atmosphere since they would prefer to just hang about and talk shit about music and listen to a dozen different bands. I realize that the bangya culture is what keeps the bands afloat, but I think it's also this culture that sort of kills the fun for a lot of guys who enjoy the music and enjoy the scene aesthetically but isn't just invested in one band and wants to enjoy some host fantasy with them. And this is why guys have a larger part in the western fandom because ours really isn't connected much to the Japanese one beyond listening to the same bands. To be fair though, quite a few bands try to remedy this by doing those male only shows, and I think that's an awesome thing, although I wish it weren't necessary.

Do Japanese men dislike visual kei?

this. i've spoken to enough gya who would notice any minute change in a song arrangement and analyze lyrics/the meaning behind something artistic (or "artistic") a band has put out. but sure, some of them are in it for the fantasy, and that's awesome too. don't see much of a difference between dudes who don't know a lot about music and flail over cool guitar solos/how badass this and that musician is and gya who react pretty much the same about pretty bandoman.

This. I went to see exist trace recently and 90% of the fans were male In Chile i'd say it's about 70% female 30% male for VK bands with cute members (this depends a lot on the band though), a more even ratio for bands with heavier music/90's and early 2000's bands and probably 60% male and 40% female for non-visual rock bands. I conducted a very informal survey and while women tend to prefer bands with male members, guys listen to both girl bands (exist trace, Scandal, Band Maid etc) and male-bands evenly. Also, the amount of gay male fans isn't really outstanding compared to other genres, most male fans I know and hang out with have girlfriends. This is a topic/social phenomenon that actually interests me a lot.

    Satsuki (砂月) – Apocalypse EP

Welcome to the biggest surprise of 2016 so far. If anyone asked me a few years ago which j-rock artist do I think will dabble in the djent genre of metal, I'd probably say Dir en grey or Gazette, but Satsuki? The guy with the angelic voice and less than brutal growls? And yet here we are with one of his two March 19 releases, Apocalypse. This is a four track EP, the other, Eclipse, is a fuller 9 tracks. But for right now we're dealing with Apocalypse, the heavier of the two releases. It opens with "Reincarnation", a moody intro that gives off a vibe of a dystopian post-apocalyptic society, then it leads into the title track, which is a surprising take on bands like Meshuggah, Tesseract, and Periphery. The riffs are thick and chunky, but there are hints of haunting melodies buried beneath the chaos. Then Satsuki's trademark angelic vocals come in and it almost feels like home. But then "Burning Out" comes in and we hear Satsuki's new and improved harsh vocals. A vast improvement over his slightly perturbed Cookie Monster vocals in Rentrer en Soi's final live. Satsuki clearly got some coaching on how to growl correctly. The EP ends with "Revelation", a track that could have fit in on the latest Meshuggah album. Satsuki (and the band) seem to understand how djent works, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it's pulled off. Great syncopated grooves and head nodding riffs. The only problem here is the production (which also applies to Satsuki's other release "Eclipse", but I'll get to that another time). Again, everything is mixed too loud. I listened to this via high quality streaming on Tidal with Sennheiser ear buds, and it all just sounded flat and lacking in dynamics. I shouldn't have my phone volume at less than half way and it sounds like I've got it full blast. This will always be a pet peeve of mine. Overall I'm pleased, especially since Satsuki's solo career has been less than impressive, merely cranking out toothless and nondescript J-pop/rock ever since RES disbanded. Here's to hoping Satsuki has finally found some direction.
