    Petty hatred towards bands.

I agree with everything you said, but I think this here is a little bit different, though. 4chan has the whole anonymity thing going for it, so of course it's going to be a volatile cesspool. People can say whatever they want, no matter how outlandish and crass, and have no repercussions. Obviously you don't need to have any sort of personal identity tied to you on MH, but everyone can comb through your post archive. You accumulate a history. Everyone has their own little persona. Ultimately, this is my philosophy. I know what I like, I know what I dislike, and I know what sounds good to me. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, and really, people are stubborn with their opinions, especially when it comes to music. And unfortunately, I'm one of those people that has a hard time talking about music. It's difficult for me to describe what I like or dislike in a song, so sometimes I feel left out on the discussions anyway, but occasionally I can chime in on things I feel like I can concisely and confidently talk about. It's a happy medium. Less drama, fewer toes stepped on. I like it. A lot of what I wanted to say in response OP has already been said, but I will throw out that I love this website, I really do. I think it's great that we can have this town-hall-esque get together where we can talk about this dumb genre of music that seemingly only a handful of people like. But admittedly, yes, sometimes it can get a little frustrating when people are being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian or are only contributing to a discussion to bait and provoke people. But I think it's important to note that internet culture has changed exponentially within the past half-decade as well. It's become a normality to express things in a satirical, flat, curt-and-to-the-point manner, almost to the point of being insulting. Lest we forget that it's hard to convey emotion through text. I could be wrong, but with short-form media (twitter, microblogging [i.e., tumblr]) becoming more popular, well-thought-out and long-form discussion is phasing out, and you're going to see more troll, "just disband lol" comments more frequently. However, this whole conversation, in the context of any form of media, is murky and wading in incredibly grey waters. As people have mentioned above, music is an extremely subjective thing. At the end of the day, this is what it boils down to, I think. Also:

Some of us just have an extremely dark sense of humour that comes out best when expressing opinions in an edgy manner. All you with your popcorns out, you are also part of these people. You like the drama edginess creates. Not that I count myself amongst either of those people. I mean, I don't even express my opinions on this forum. I have effectively learned to live inside my own little headbubble with all the bands that I love inside and all the bands that I dislike as well as every other opinion in the world outside. Trust me, it's the happiest place in the world.

    Petty hatred towards bands.

This ties in nicely with a Facebook message I received yesterday. The lurker reading this can consider this my unofficial response, but I will get back to her shortly. Her question revolved around how to get started in the community, because from the outside looking in we can be a little off putting. But our attitudes towards music, especially Japanese music, is unique within the scene and to the Internet. We cater to an older, more seasoned demographic who know what they like and what they don't, and who really appreciate it when people take the time to explain their opinions. Other places centering around J-Rock are content with agreeing to disagree on a much more superficial level, eschewing any type of confrontation because of how easily it can slip into drama. I have a different philosophy regarding standing one's ground in a conversation, and I moderate with that philosophy in mind. I step in when things get too spicy, but overall I'm content to let two or more members plumb the depths of their differences in opinion because that's where the most interesting discussion lies. Conversation dries up quickly at the oasis of agreement, but I've had members sign up here solely to write reviews to disagree with mine. That's something that even five years ago, I would not have seen. There are two extremes of fans, but as was said earlier these extremes are in every scene. We are a much smaller community, so those extremes appear exaggerated. I've witnessed fans who hate everything just to be contrarian, and I've witnessed fans with no concept of music they don't or cannot enjoy. Most members here fall into neither one of those extremes, remaining somewhere in the middle, even if we all gravitate to one extreme. The negative opinions prevail because of three main factors: it's easier to be negative and engaging than positive and engaging (without seeming like a shill) contrarian reviews are more likely to bring people to the table to argue back those with positive opinions about music just don't share them as often Like what you like, and if someone here writes a review that you disagree with, write a positive one back! It's the best way to keep a good atompshere where everyone feels like they belong, start deep discussion, and promote JRock at the same time.

Tourism at home: Disposable goes to Hyvinkää. First and foremost I am upset that I paid 21.80 euros for the train tickets and saw not a single ticket inspector neither to or from Hyvinkää. It's common to not see a single one in Helsinki, but I didn't realise that even when you're going out of the way that there's still nobody there. I could have bought twice more muikku ( a top 3 finnish food no doubt. ) I make my way there at about to the "city" at around 18-19 and check out the sights, have a few beers at the park and enjoy the unsightly hot weather for once. The town landmark is the church designed by Aarno Ruusuvuori that I went to take pictures off immediately. Unfortunately you couldn't get inside past 16, but I met a nice lady outside who took a picture of me in front of the entrance and we had a good chat about the architect, the town itself and how nice it is to have festivals like that in other places than the big cities. You know it's Finland when even the older folk are so desensitised to metal culture that they don't even bring it up. In eastern countries you can get around for months and not see a single metalhead, while in Helsinki I average seeing one on every street I go to that has people. That's pretty incredible when you think about it. I get into the festival area right when Firespawn started playing. Here are the cliffs of the four bands I "saw" Firespawn: Shit sux. I just checked that apparently there's some entombed crew on this, and honestly I don't know what that means anymore as I haven't kept up with them past the first album, but nonetheless it was so boring, like bounce faux old school death metal. Between the songs you heard gems like "AND THIS NEXT ONE IS CALLED..:" to be followed by a riff that sounded like something off Morbid Angel's HIV+ album Domination. NIghtbringer: I left Firespawn after three songs to charge my phone. Before the concert I met some nice Americans who had seen this band a bunch of times, and somehow that convinced me that I'd probably be able to dig it. NO SUCH LUCK was tremendously bored during this one. I took a 15 second video clip that's like new housing architecture: it has nothing distinct about it, and could be any band from any country. Maybe it's massive and immersive if you can still fuck with this style, I could not. Marduk: This was touted as a 20th anniversary Heaven Shall Burn set. You know you are hearing 90's riffs again cause you can memorise them quickly and find them very pleasant to ear. Live it was palatable, but nonetheless I think this is like the textbook definition of norsecore? I don't fuck with this album (or this band for that matter) on record at all, but they were rock 'n roll professionals with Wacken tier MC's and everything ( STEELFEST HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU GUIZE DOING!!?!?!? MAKE SOME NOISE" ) so I can't say it was like the last two bands I saw. Good for sitting on a picnic table, drinking beer and tindering. Peste Noire: FUCK. First of all you can tell the mood as definitely changed from all the Wacken businessmen and mystical judeo-cristian tremolo metal; the foreign fan contingency was strong, roman salutes and sieg heils resounded and before the first song ended I had counted four fights right in my vicinity, and by the end I had lost count. The danger was brought back to black metal! I definitely had a good time oogling at all the French and Russian alt-right haircut types in the audience and their implementation of a zero tolerance policy towards Finnish drunks. The band was everything I hoped for. Famine is such a character outside of the stage so it figures that he feels large on stage as well ( literally as well since he appears to have been lifting. ) It more like a punk show in a way, especially when that guy from Baise ma hache came on stage for a couple of songs. Fucking Peste Noire really is just wonderfully unique and intense music that's very participatory at the same time, especially if can actually speak French. I just tried to do my best Famine impression and shriek something unintelligible. I'm really a fan of a show like this that maintain a grave severity and some bloody dignity without being stiff: no stupid mc's, no gimmicks, just black metal terror. http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/peste-noire/2016/salle-des-fetes-de-st-martin-theressus-saint-martin-terressus-france-3bfadc44.html this is pretty much the set, although some things I believe were in a different order and no encore. The Chevrotine cover was so good that I'm probably going to get that album later. Absolutely a fantastic show 'cause I know and greatly enjoy every song of theirs. Famine is a legend. After the festival I met a band member from an unnamed Finnish band with whom I chatted a little bit, and watched as him sieg heiling his friends as they came out of the festival area. hazuki and ai are still butt buddies they just both wanted a monopoly on songwriting so hazuki struck out on his own. (there was even a fairly substantial rumor that ai's part time job was working for hazuki's mom's business lmao) @deadman posted the link but there were problems with the member's private relationships not staying private, Au putting up fan gifts on auction, and something about a fan sign made for the 10th anniversary being given to the band and then being found in the garbage outside the venue... a lot of their "old guard" fans were the sources of this information and it completely poisoned the well

    Petty hatred towards bands.

yeah people who think MH ppl are bitchy really haven't gone far into the /mu/ related circlejerkes of the net, trve black metal online communities (literal nazis sweetie...not unite haters or whatever) or pop stan twitter...THAT shit is insanity and compared to any of the three MH is an absolute fucking joke. Its tougher on jrawk fans or whatever because they get attached to their crossdressing lil babus (who are in real life hosts) bc they might be one of the few western fans on the net for x band and so they want to protect them from trolling or w/e. I get it too....except i dont because i don't stan trash...BUT when i do i got a sense of humour about it (don't come for aiolin please im sensitive) lets put it this way, the only way you can in any capacity get upset is because you think someone else's opinion matters...and its the net...so don't do that. you could come here and shit talk dir en grey all you'd want and i'd laugh in your face because you need your ears checked...and you can do the same for when i think ABC sound like genital warts because my opinion is stupid and its literally just that. not that talking deliberate smack is such a light thing...but...the world is ending and i get my kicks off calling MiA voldemort's whore cousin because it gets a giggle out of somebody (usually just me). also, tanuki is literally full of this stuff...just not remotely as funny *cackle*. respects to u for voicing ur opinion though! I think the days of hating x band because of y are over, everyone's too depressed about jrawk to be an annoying fan. I will say that the bands that got a following on tumblr, especially mejibray, have been a target for a while simply because of the annoying fan reception. as of bands that have come later than that...i could foresee pentacum turning into a roast magnet but visual kei is dead haha!

hahahha! sounds a lot like me when I randomly met Jun & Toya from Gotcharocka on the street in Shibuya. I don't have that many stuff happening to me since I am silent one mostly standing in the backgrounds at lives, but I was in the second row at Wing Works and this girl tried to push me away all the time since one of the support members couldn't stop staring at me/or was he flirting who freaking knows maybe she was trying to save me lmao. Tzk giving a air kiss towards me on a mejibray live at takadanobaba was pretty sweet too. And this is like no interaction thing but I can't seem to forget that time when Sono (Matenrou Opera) hushed the audience after we have song the Gloria phrase, he hushed us and sang himself in a cappella while Shibuya AX was completely silent. That was magical.

AvelCain: During gyakudive i was almost lying on vocalist's box (idk how to call it) and accidentally touched Karma's foot. He looked at me like a psycho and slapped my face with his palm. It was like more pushing palm into my face. Duuuuude. Saw how Kisaki and Karma hugged each other because Sui told them to do it (?). It was the coldest hug i've ever seen. lol Before that live i was lost and asked for a random people for help. They showed me way and stopped while saying "This is this place". I raised my head and saw AvelCain in front of me. So i thanked these people and was pretending i don't know who is AvelCain. SAVAGE: During gyakudive i almost didn't broke my nose because guitarist catched my hand and pulled me on someone. I felt pain in my nose for few days. At live i thought i was bleeding. Injured my back because Ryuka used my back as a table or a chair and the next day i was not able to sit or move. Chariots: Jin thrown smal sausage into me. D.I.D.: I came to venue before live because i want to check where the venue is because i'm a stupid gaijin and i'm always lost. And at that moment i saw D.I.D. arriving in their van in front of me. I got scared and started run away. Sel'm guys saw this stupid gaijin running like a crazy. lol. Lolita23q: After live one awesome guy gave to me his atari ticket and i've met Sou face to face twice. Lycaon: Fans wanted to go to toilet but toiled doors was occupied by Satoshi and surrounded by BORN members. Trans Note: Riding metro to Suzuya's live together with him. I wouldn't realize that if he wouldn't be staring at me TOO much. Like having literally no shame, turning to me and staring like a weirdo entire time till we left metro. etc. etc. so many....

Saw MERRY in Liquidroom for their 2009 Underworld [BURST]Tour final and during the set, I was sub-consciously digging my nose (I know, I know....) and my eyes and Gara's met (I'm a Asian dude). Gara then smiled and proceeded to violently dig HIS nose with all his fingers, one at a time and then licked all his fingers while glancing in my direction with a crazed look. Good times!

In the "especially cringe" department, there's "artiste extraordinaire" HITT revealing his bare chest to show us he had stickers on his nipples with his own face printed on them. He then proceeded to detach them and threw them in the audience, to the ecstatic cheers of the crowd. I'll concede that hysterical laughter alone was worth the price of admission.

    Fanfiction

I used to write VK fanfiction in my younger days. I don't anymore. That part of me ended when my relationship with my ex-gf ended 5 years ago. After that I had no one to muse with and I just sorta dropped it. I don't miss it too much, to be honest. I've moved on. I still read fanfiction tho. I'd consider myself a junkie but uhh... I'm not, really. I feel quite picky, much like the other people in this thread. I don't read J-fanfics at all anymore, tho, so that makes up for it. My fandom is video games. Preferably Dragon Age. Which has a HUGE fanfiction community, so being picky isn't that bad. Imma horny teenage girl as well and enjoy my smut and lemon way too much. Okay, I feel the need to clarify this tho: I enjoy smut the most when it's smashed together with a good plot. Smut just for smut isn't really doing it for me anymore. That's what 50 shades of fuck this shit is for. And I'm veeeeeery particular about the plot and the writing style. Being that I'm in favour of gay couples (much like a lot of fanfic liking gals out there) I absolutely HATE it when authors write their male characters acting like 20-something-year-old bitches thirsting for drama. Nnnnnngh NO. Correction to my previous statement: I do not favour gay couples, I read EXCLUSIVELY of gay couples. Especially in DA fandom, too many females are self-inserts and I can't stand it. At least with established male characters the authors seem to pick up some of the intended characteristics and apply them to the written characters, enough that I don't feel the need to cringe when some horny lady wants to get it with Solas.

    Petty hatred towards bands.

I see no problem in harshly criticizing a band for what you OBJECTIVELY think is bad. It is not simply petty hate to say 98% of vk vocalists sucks balls. it IS true. Most of them does not have much technical skills, went through vocal training or something like that. Should that stop you from liking any band whatsoever? absolutely not. Should any negative opinion affect you in any way? probably not, unless something that is stated is actually true. But that would be good, right? that's what opinions are for, to allow to see things you may have missed. There's also the side that music is as much as an art as it is a business. Some people spend money, they are entitled to say something sucks because they haven't got back the satisfaction they expected for their money. And it's simple as that, something disappoints you, bash away. It's just an opinion, shouldn't be that much of a big deal in the big picture. Of course there's trolling just for the sake of trolling, but that happens in everything in life, and to be quite honest, to be personally affected by the way someone talks about a band you like sounds really immature/white people problem... I think in the end people should chill out. If every Deviloof fan got angry everytime people here make fun of the band, the forum would be made only of complaining threads.

    Hey everywan.

I’ve been lurking for quite a while but finally decided to make an account. I just hope that I’ll actually get around to posting, I’m pretty shy. I’ve been listening to VKei for over a decade (eleven years, to be technical), but my tastes as of late seemed to have jumped into a time machine; I used to be very diligent about keeping up with new or modern bands, but over the last couple years or so, I’ve been backtracking into more ~*old school*~ artists and I have a hard time keeping up with everything going on now. Which isn’t necessarily bad, I love what I listen to, but I’m hoping to find new stuff and expand my horizons yay etc. I found out about DADAROMA and MORRIGAN, bands I'm loving, from lurking around here, so I'm hopeful. Off the top of my head, some stuff I dig: Malice Mizer (because of course), AMADEUS, CANARY, Eliphas Levi, RENTRER EN SOI, NOi’X, Sleep My Dear, L’eprica, sibilebashir, Grieva, Madeth Gray'll, MIRAGE, UnsraW (RIP my sons), Gallo, MORE, sukekiyo, etc. Outside of that, I like a lot of Japanese indie (new and old), v a p o r w a v e, metalcore and djent, hip-hop, jrock in general… it’s a mixed bag. But yeah! I look forward to seeing you guys around and actually interacting.

    MEJIBRAY will go on hiatus

can't help but feel that this whole debate is much ado about nothing if you're living in japan and regularly go to lives then you're entitled to give your opinion on their lives. if you're an international fan who voraciously gobbles up all their releases (legally or not) then you're entitled to evaluate the quality of their recorded music. the problem only arises when this discussion bleeds into the neighboring terrain of 'how does one objectively judge a band's quality?' or 'what's the proper way of enjoying a band?'--which never fails to generate 5 pages of same old thing that impresses no one in particular... then there's the question of how much instrumental value you are actually of to the band, which is related but entirely separable from the first. it's def true that the actual impact of someone ordering a 3000 yen album from CDJapan on the band is probably a lot less than they think, but that doesn't reduce the weight of their opinion on the band's recorded music. critics all over the world are paid to do exactly that: to give their opinions while remaining pretty much monetarily irrelevant.

I'm saying just because you haven't see a band perform live, it doesn't mean you can't criticize them. Studio albums are indicative of an artist's musical skill and songwriting capabilities. If a band has five albums and I only like one of them, I think it's fair to say that I don't like the band's music. Seeing them live won't change anything.
