    ...............hi

hi, i'm ryan... i've been lurking here since forever, created an account a few months ago, and lately something's been telling me i should try to talk here more. i'm not terribly good with forums though - something about the way anything i'd say gets kept on the site forever seems to trip me out a bit. and i'm not sure how much of value i'd have to comment - so, i'll try to make myself useful and get to posting some (probably wildly inaccurate) translations~ as far as me....... got into vkei with ナイトメア about when their s/t came out, haven't found a band that resonates more with me since. p sure i can find something to like in just about any style/scene, but i really think vkei hit its golden age between 1997-2007. at least to me. as of typing this i'm also stanning diru, mucc, the gallo, and meji pretty hard. and since 2014 i've been living in varying degrees of Worried About Royz. IRL i work at a sushi/udon place, it's p great, and i'm trying to get the hang of this whole 'understanding and speaking japanese' thing. it's hard tho. Oh, and i'm trying to get a band together. also hard. and that's basically it for me because i have no life outside visual kei. Nice to meet all of you though - even if i haven't said much anything before i owe y'all a lot for recommending a lot of my fav bands. special shoutout to all the staff/mods, rarezhut guys, and everyone who translates band shit bc it'd be so much harder to get into this dumb scene without people like you putting in all the work. Oh and @ everyone feel free to hmu on twitter, username's same there as here

But isn't that a good thing? Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is Jim Carrey's last superp performance, and not even in his wildest dreams will Neil Patrick Harris be close to doing something as good as that. And by going with a different Count Olaf you'll get something way different, rather than a remake of a good film. It's an excellent choice IMO! And you have to remember that Count Olaf was a humorless villain in the books. He was the opposite of Jim Carrey's version in the film. But as far as I know, A Series of Unfortunate Events will be much closer to the novels with its dark, dramatic mystery-approach, rather than the dark comedy of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I think this sounds good. It's got massive potential and I am really looking forward to it.

I think there's a possibility but if they were to form a new band it'd be in a year from the day they disbanded just like Lycaon. For a while leading up to their disbandment Japanese Lycaon fans had a theory that was there was a clause in their contracts that didn't allow them to play in a new band for one year after their disbandment and them coming back as Initial'L exactly one year after their last live proved that to be the case. I'm assuming it's the same for AvelCain, especially since Byou was doing support for sibilebashir while Rei was out recently. tl;dr it's possible but probably won't happen until July of next year. Also, as far as I know Eve is still associated with Shimizuya so if Karma and Zen do start a new band not under Shimizuya there's a 0% chance of him being in it.

    The general Metal discussion thread

I'm locked in thrash-mania these days it seems. Been spinning nothing but Kreator, Destruction and some Sodom. I'm not too familar with the latter band, but their new album is just amazing killer stuff! A lot more interesting than Destruction's latest one (which btw is also not too bad, just nothing special). Gonna dive deep into Sodom's back catalogue soon. Also, I've realized yet again that this album still rips like hell: (what a brutal year with this and Slayer's Reign in Blood as well!)

Amafurase Tanmaina by Kagrra is one of my all time fave songs since 2005. I'm living an renewed obsession with the song that is amplified by the mysticism in the lyrics about a god, powerful and terrible that makes people be in awe.

I don't believe Tanuki. All Tanuki really is, is just a bunch of people who call themselves fans, but yet post nudes of any Vkei guy anywhere, and also make fun of Vkei guys for possibly being gay. Also, a lot of the rumours tend to be really outrageous in my opinion. Also, according to an interview, each member of the band writes their own parts, but Kuro begins to write most of them, so stress could still be a possibility. I always wondered why Mutsuki left though. I mean, it seems odd he left at the same time as Koyomi. They either could have left for the same reason, whatever that may be, but it's also worth mentioning Mutsuki used to be a session drummer, so maybe he wanted to go back to session drumming. It's also possible he wanted to have a normal job and normal life, which I can understand knowing how stressful Vkei can be. I mean, a lot of Vkei guys turn toward cigarette addiction and alcoholism.

@Carmelzors- already touched on a few things that I was going to, but to elaborate on my anecdote in the OP - well, you're correct. The people that said Mizuki sounds VK don't actually listen to VK, in fact a few of them downright despise the scene. However that doesn't mean their assessment is exactly invalid either. In general, J-indie fans are attuned to a different kind of singing than visual kei fans are (note that when i say J-indie fans, i'm not referring to people who listen to those "indie-pop-rock" bands or pop-rock that tries to come off as indie). The fans i'm referring to are used to listening to bands that don't put a huge emphasis on the vocals - where the vocals are kind of secondary to the music, the lyrics, and the overall feeling/aesthetic. Whereas with VK - even tho you have a broad range of vocalists in the scene - more often than not, you can still generally tell when a vocalist is VK, as most of them have this kind of melodramatic/theatric flare to their voices, and as my Japanese friend says - a lot of them sound as if they have accents while they're singing as opposed to just singing "naturally". While that's debatable, you should at least be able to understand that when these hardcore J-indie fans hear a guy like Mizuki sing in the style that he does, it's very easy to lump him the same category or class of vocalists as VK - even if it's not completely accurate, it's still somewhere in the ballpark. I can certainly relate because most of the J-rock I listened to before I got into J-indie was Visual Kei. In fact, I had a really tough time getting into J-indie because it seemed like a lot of the vocalists sounded really apathetic or just had really uncharacteristic voices - whereas with VK, the vocalists usually have a ton of quirks and nuances to their singing. They were just completely different styles. This is all very general of course, but I hope it helps illustrate the overall dichotomy of vocal styles between both scenes and how someone might possibly consider Mizuki as VK-sounding. @Carmelzors - it's funny because when I made this thread, I was much more focused on the bands' parallels and completely neglected the size of their respective discographies, so that's definitely a good point you made. Personally, I have to go with cinema staff. When it comes to pop-rock bands with indie sensibilities, or just really poppy-sounding indie-rock - whatever you want to call it, I feel like cinema staff have this arena completely locked down, and I've personally not heard a band do it better. For me, they pretty much set the blueprint.. Even after going major, they've never released anything less than solid. They're STILL cranking out great tunes and haven't gone completely pop, despite a few scares here and there. Objectively speaking, they're definitely the more technical band here as well. Chanty are really freaking good, though. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're one of my favorite active VK bands (even though I haven't thought too much about this). I do feel like they attempt to do more with their sound than cinema staff does as @doomboxnoted, but because of that, I also feel like it makes them less unique in a sense. Like, I could hear a cinema staff and instantly know it's a cinema staff song - they stand out amongst both their peers and the younger bands they've influenced (which kinda confers with @Carmelzors' point about their legacy). Whereas chanty just isn't as immediately recognizable and don't necessarily stand out from their peers in any spectacular fashion. But anyways, it's cool to get everyone's different opinions on this. It's also interesting to see how this battle is playing out and what it says about mh's taste in general. I definitely didn't realize there were so many Chanty fans around.

Nah, I only wish I was totally fluent in Japanese. Japan is an awesome place to visit... I spent most of my time there just walking the streets and going into random little shops and restaurants. The only big problem was that I am Chinese, so naturally Japanese people assumed I was Japanese and thought I was a lost dumbass who couldn't understand them well. It was a different experience from what I've heard Caucasians say - that random people would sometimes come up to them eagerly trying to help them out and practice their English. That could've been a fun thing to happen to me, but it wouldn't happen unless I had a big sign that said "I AM CANADA GAIJIN PRACTICE EIGO HERE" Anyway, going to school in Japan (and Asia in general) sounds like a special kind of hell, and they still have a ways to go with respect to women's rights. i.e. attitudes towards women's roles in the household and workplace. From what I hear. So I wouldn't really want to live and work there...

I don't know if it's the right place for it, or if it’s ok to share it here, but... TOUR16-17 from depression to ________ [mode of Kisou] Report from todays live Every word unspoken, every thought left and buried. These are the words I couldn't say. The Words You Can't Hear. DIR EN GREY From Depression to ________ [Mode of Kisou] Fukuoka International Congress Centre 11/20/2016 Tonight’s concert, I’d say, is one of the best performances of the band, technically, in my humble opinion. Kyo was super spot on in all songs. Low registers, high notes all perfectly executed. This is gonna be long. Read and be bored. 😅 I saw all of the members from my seat since the venue has a slope like set up. It was a struggle to watch them because everyone demands for attention. So painful. We started with Kigan and Kyo was playful from the onset. In Zomboid, the intro was played with a spotlight on Shinya. It was divine how he played them drums! 😍 In most songs the background was the purgatory-like image. It must be some painting? The first 3 songs, lighting was intricately scheduled. There were no background screens. In the break between Utafumi and Undecided, Kyo sat just at the edge of Shinya’s drumset - where he normally places his bottled water and towel. Kaoru was the last to come back and they played a medley of slow songs. It’s wonderful. I have no words because it seems they arranged the setlist this way. It’s painfully heartbreaking and all perfectly played by the band. Kyo has embraced the lyrics of Kisou and his singing, I’d say, was much more felt than when I watched them in Kawasaki. Undecided was again played with a spotlight on Die during the intro. Ah Die was sitting on a high chair in 3 songs if I’m not mistaken. There was one part of the song when Toshiya stared at Kaoru as he played. Call me crazy but that’s how it looked to me. I really adore Kyo’s performance in Undecided because he sang it exactly as the same arrangement in the album - so perfectly in tune. The image in the background was that of burning letters or pictures? Rinkaku followed and DAMN THIS IS THE MOST PERFECT PERFORMANCE OF THE SONG THAT IVE SEEN LIVE! I was teary eyed by the end of the song. Shinya, Die, Kaoru, Toshiya were all lost in their instruments like never before - it was truly stunning! Kyo sang it perfectly oh my goodness… I can see them all in my head and I’m speechless. If only I could bottle that performance and keep it forever… Kaoru mouthed the lyrics during the last verse and it was so obvious how emotional he was in the song. Rinkaku… you’re so perfect. The band’s chaos is just so beautiful in this song. 😭 Cause of fickleness! Kyo’s signature dance move! He literally was instructing us to move like he does aaarrghhhhh I CANNOT HANDLE THE CUTEEEE! Shinya’s songs in tonight’s live are too powerful I just cannot! Hmm… the background in this was the lyrics. In between Cause and Embryo, while waiting for Totchi, Die and Kaoru to come back, Kyo was kneeling down at the edge of Shinya’s drum set. Hehe. Already tired, Kyo-chan? Lol. Embryo. As usual Totchi had his pick in between his lips during the verses. Kyo was gyrating ever so slightly in this song. What a tease. Kyo sang this perfectly. No mistakes in the lyrics this time haha. I believe Die was sitting in a high chair during this song. Hmmm yeah, he was. Ah the background here is a constellation that forms an image of an unborn baby. I waited for Totchi to throw the pick after the song but he didn’t. The next song was Mushi. Totchi was throwing glances at Kaoru during the latter’s guitar solo towards the end. Again, I know I’m crazy. Maybe unless Totchi was looking at someone beyond Kaoru? Hmmm… Kyo sang this song so painfully. I thought he would just drop dead on the floor and cry. He was too lost in the song - it was heartbreaking. In the end he said “生きて” while he was slumped on the floor. 😭😭😭 New song. The more I hear it, the more I hear Kasumi. And now I cannot unhear “Ranunculus”. It has grown in me, this song. Is it Kaoru’s? The lighting in this song was gorgeous. Purple and Blue (uhuh… uhuh… yes, i’m reading into this. So what?!). And in the final chorus it turned purple and yellow? Or brown? Ugh. Colorblind me. I believe it was after this song that Toshiya unceremoniously threw his pick - in the darkness. It was my first time to hear 24 Shirinda live and it was so powerful. Die was the one backing up on “Give me love, give me pain, give me…” Totchi’s basslines here reverberated in the whole hall oh my goodness.😍 Background was red things-something ugh I can’t remember. Karasu - Totchi was on fire. My eyes were glued on him in this song. He used his mic stand as an effect to the song just like in In Situ though not as sexy. He was almost kneeling on the floor as he played this song. Soooooo intense!!! I LOST ALL SENSE WHEN THEY STARTED PLAYING UGLY. Ugly is like one of my most fave songs and I’ve been praying that they play this song live so I can headbang to it like there’s no tomorrow. And that I did. “DIEEEE!!!!” This song is super intense it should be in every live. REALLYYYY!!!! THE BASS SOLO, THE GUITAR RIFFS, THE SWEET OH SWEET DRUM BEATS AAAHHH IM TRULY IN LOVE. Un deux - same background as usual (tower? Church?) Totchi was particularly jumpy in this song. Encore. Except for Kaoru, the rest were wearing merch/con goods. Die and Shinya wearing the dolman t-shirt. Totchi and Kyo wearing long sleeved top. Toshiya wasn’t wearing neck harness this time. Only Shinya - which he later threw to the crowd (and was retrieved by a girl wearing a dress who dove to the stairs - who said you can’t dive when you wear short skimpy dress? Hmm. That girl. Respect to fangirls INCREASED!). Domestic fucker family - indeed the lyrics were flashed on screen. I wasn’t dreaming the last time haha. Umbrella - i so love umbrella. Kyo was motioning the crowd to jump and move their hands in sequence it was soooo cute (during Miss girl very fond of child). What else… - Totchi looks so genuinely happy. So giggly, so smiley. It’s like everything we do, he’d laugh and giggle like a little boy/girl! - Kaoru soooo pouty and only half of his mouth was drawn with black ink (does that make sense? Lol!). He was competing with Toshiya on the crab dance in many of the songs. His feet apart almost all of the time just like Totchi and damn he mouths the lyrics when he’s so into the song! He waa also very close to the crowd, he kept on stepping on the ledge to rile them up. - Kaoru, after the encore, agaaaiiin teased the crowd when he was throwing his picks away. He was telling the fans to put their hands together like asking for alms before he’d throw the picks. What a bully! 😂😂😂 - Shinya wore the pink killer shirt during encore and when he drums away, the shirt falls off his shoulders. 😵 i love it. So sexy. - There were 3 songs in which Die and Totchi (and Kaoru at one point) were hovering on Shinya’s area. And Totchi was so giggly like there’s an inside joke or something. - Bass guitar trouble. Can’t remember which song but Totchi’s bass malfunctioned and his tech ran to him with a replacement guitar while gesturing NG. Totchi was shocked and looked disappointed (poor boy, ehm man) as he tried to follow on the song. - Kyooooo!!! He sneakily went again to Kaoru’s side and was making faces and gesturing his fingers with a poking motion! Kaoru was so deep in his guitar playing and when he heard us all laughing he looked at Kyo and Kyo just innocently walked away (since he really didn’t do anything!!! Haha!). - Kyo’s next victim was Die and he did his poking gestures from behind Die and once again walked away innocently when Die realized there was someone behind him. - Totchi was a bouncing baby boy again. Literally. He bounced from his ledge to Kyo’s ledge (oh those long legs I wish I could capture that long leeeaaaappp moment!). He was also jumping around in Un Deux’s chorus literally jumping 360 degrees, like a crab leaping lol. He was so adorable! - After the customary throwing of almost everything they have, Toshiya who was standing on Kyo’s ledge, stepped down and when we all thought he was gonna walk out of the stage, HE TOOK HIS SHIRT OFF. JUST LIKE THAT. I thought I wouldn’t hear the end of screaming. Even the guy beside me reacted because it was just too sudden, too unexpected? We, our precious eyes were once again graced by the washboard abs of manly Toshiya. I can never get used to it. I just can’t. I wish I can turn it off but man, he’s soooo attractive! Particularly tonight he was so unguarded, so relaxed, so… playfully calm. I soooo envy whoever he ends up with (not that I’m wishing to be the one haha! I’m on Kaoru’s side forevaaah!). All right, that I guess ends my almost endless ramblings. Forgive the fangirl in me. I do this and write forever because I want to commit what I experienced to something I can read in the future. I have a memory of a goldfish. Pffft. Setlist - hope it’s correct! [Band Battle] Chanty vs. cinema staff

There's this guy who also got behind this notion of "sounding vk" in cinema staff's case around those FB's J-indie circles and AFAIK he had Unite (well, that vk act) in his mind when describing them - which is surprisingly apt when we think of comparisons (uplifting, soft but still sorta medium-ranged vocalcraft etc.). VK vocals have no fixed medium (we are not living 00s anymore) at this point so it's really difficult to argue about "objectivity" or "they definitely don't listen to vk" (the hell we know?!). I mean, sometimes people even guess rather out-of-nowhere VK influences of J-indie figureheads to this day, e.g. TK (avid Luna Sea fan) or Junichi Konno from Karasu (Mucc and Merry somewhat influenced his work on several albums).

    (Lyrics) Yeti - if (translation)

Yeti - If Lyrics/Arrangement: Suzuki Satoshi Hey , there's the only one most important thing. You see , I really want to tell you but I can't do it very well. Aah , It's not "Good-bye" or "Thank you". But I think there are no better words to descript. Hey , I remember it as hard as I can. You see , It becomes a memorie in a moment. Aah , it fades away little by little. I think someday it will eventually dissappear. But I will not forget . I won't forget it . But I don't wanna lose it . I won't let it go . But I will not let you go . I won't leave you . Like this way , I keep telling you like this , always ... Although it is meaningless. Though it's meaningless. But I am always here. I know you can understand it. I am longing for you. I am longing for you . My tears are falling down, slowly overflowing, it seems not to stop. Maybe it's not a romantic story, but my heart for you won't be a lie. Because I always believe it ... Always . Hey , If I can start everything from the beginning. You see , I will go back to the when right now. Aah, I know it is impossible. But sometimes I still hope that I can do it without expectation. I want to be close to you . I want to be with you . I want to see your face . I want to talk with you . I am calling your name . No matter how many times, I am calling you . But I will find it out soon , I am losing you , forever... I want to protect you . I really want to protect you . I am always here . Even I just pretend to be strong . There is not an end . I won't stop loving you. Although I know you must be weeping, tears are overfowing , can't be stopped. But the smiles which are ahead of our sorrows, Someday it must ... it will be with us . Although it is meaningless. Though it's meaningless. But I am always here. I know you can understand it. I am longing for you. I am longing for you . My tears are falling down, slowly overflowing, it seems not to stop. Hey , but there's the only one most important thing. I support this idea and I propose that we take it one step further by imposing strict eugenics on all bands, since there might be members of not 100% pure Japanese descent who mask themselves as members of the purported master race. It's time we start a fund to send one of the fine gentlemen who are an expert in this field to Japan in order to meticulously measure the skulls and ensure the racial purity of our Japanese musicians. Perhaps we can make various sub-forums for degrees of Japanese-ness in order to let people decide on their own tolerance for racial deviation? Maybe they're fine with bands who have members who show slightly Caucasoid/Negroid facial traits but not so much as it shows in their skin tone for example? ...Or we just don't care. I'm the last person to think swede-kei and the various other weeaboo scenes are anything to listen to, but honestly, if a band is based in Japan, sings in Japanese, has it's social circles in the Japanese Visual scene, the only thing separating them is race. Kind of silly to make a deal out of, in my opinion.
