    Guilty Pleasures in Japanese Music!

Gackt. Everything about Gackt — from his holier-than-thou attitude to his voice to his plastified body and face. I can't get enough of him. I actually don't feel guilty at all. I brought this thread back solely because @emmny doesn't believe there to be any Gackt-stans around.

    MIYAVI - The Others

Not a proper review per se, just my thoughts as I'm listening for the first time. I always look forward to Miyavi's releases because he has such a diverse history. The man's a talented guitarist and musician, and his vocals have been steadily improving. Now I've finally gotten around to listening to this album, I thought I'd take some notes. Cruel - Even for an artist with as varied a career as Miyavi, this is yet another step in a different direction. I'm getting a British Alternative scene vibe from this one, maybe some influence from Muse and Arctic Monkeys. It sets a tone and makes an intriguing opening track. Into The Red - Back into the catchy if slightly repetitive chorus+riff style of pop-rock Miyavi has taken to recently. Synths make the chorus pop a little more than if it was just guitar like we're used to. Overall not particularly memorable though. Come Alive - This immediately came across to me as a more lively follow up to 'Secret' from his last self-titled album. Driven again by that guitar motif. Female backing vocals and some corny trumpets shake it up a little, and the slower section breaks up what might otherwise be another quite repetitive song. Mysterious Alien Girl - Funky track with another distorted guitar motif underlying the whole song. Miyavi returns to his favourite pastime of sticking the riff on a looper and playing around over the top of it. Sadly(?) the solo is the best part of this one. Let Go - I always liked this one from the single release. It's a song that monopolizes on the catchy guitar riff and chorus to get your feet tapping. Some might criticise it for being so short, but I think that really helps this one from sticking around too long (ahem, most of Sadie's GANGSTA). Odyssey - Panning the guitar in the intro immediately makes this one stand out from the rest so far. Then we hear some Japanese for the first time. The weird woah sample is odd at the beginning, but as it repeats through the song it earns its place. This is kind of a simple upbeat track but I enjoyed it. All The Way - This song felt to me like an amalgamation of all of Miyavi's recent efforts. There's the guitar motif, the electronic elements, the repetitive chorus, the softer bridge, and the sweet solo. Pretty groovy. Also the ending is nice. Unite - Immediately reminded me of the SAMURAI SESSIONS collab era. It's actually quite nice to let Miyavi's vocals take a back seat so he can get on with that slick guitar work he's so good at. The Others - I'm surprised to find the title song of this album so late in the tracklist. There's not a lot for me to say other than, to me, this is one of the most catchy songs I've heard this year. I love it. Another fun solo too. Calling - Some solid vocals here (especially by Miyavi's standards). Guitar is also great. In fact, this is in essence what Miyavi has been doing for years, just with a layer of English lyrics and synths mixed in. I enjoyed it. Shangri-La - More Japanese! XD A little bit too repetitive for my liking but it's certainly an interesting way to close the album. At least the groove is catchy and there's some fun guitar work again, so I think this one will continue to grow on me with more listens. Overall an interesting new turn since his last full album. It feels like Miyavi is modernising and westernising, but in a way that for the most part retains his personality, energy and style. Unlike ONE OK ROCK's recent release, I'm happy that Miyavi hasn't just completely changed his style to appeal to an English speaking audience. True, he's been using English for a while, but he's always in control of the music he makes, and that's something to be respected in such a lengthy and varied career.

    Dir en grey

As a reminder: Kyo has his hands full with sukekiyo as well (and pre-Arche HnG interviews noted that he focuses a lot more on "his band" these days rather than on DEG) So there won't be any kind of non-DVD release from DEG 'till late 2016-ish - my guess though.

[Band Battle] DIR EN GREY vs. the GazettE

I'll vote Dir en grey because in terms of music, they really do their best to ditch the status quo and expand their sound with almost every release. I also believe Kaoru is by far one of the greatest composers, ever. And live, judging from my past 2 experiences, they were simply amazing and inspiring. I really dig the GazettE as well because even though they do tend to play it safe and have had many questionable releases, they also have a unique sound that stands out from the rest. Uruha is why I play guitar today. His skill and song writing capabilities are pretty nice. I feel like the band has done a great job of bouncing back from their terrible TOXIC/DIVISION run. Beautiful Deformity was just great and I believe that DOGMA will be an even bigger step up from that.

    Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!

I see no reason why one would choose to use グリーヴァ rather than just Grieva?
  17. 1 point
because there's enough demand for it + they're going to do in stores for it which means that their few hardcore fans will buy multiple copies regardless. but that doesn't quite mean that they're getting to be even close to popular. they're a baby band and there's mild interest and that's nice but popular probably isn't the word I'd use, is all as for Nagoya--plenty of bands go there regularly. Even if there aren't many bands stationed there they get lives all the time from Osaka and Tokyo bands alike so I'd say there's still a high amount of competition...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Best live band in your opinion?

the idea of concerts i'm still trying to give an idea on what its all about. the general idea for me at the moment is just to enjoy the music, environment atmosphere. When I think of a live show, its one of the most amazing experiences. but anyways aside from what I think about concerts, I've only seen Ikue Mori. it was something different. i wanna say it was a frequency show. something im not really use to. really enjoyed the sounds. best live on vid would be Les Rallizes Denudes. Just because its cool to see such an obscure band have live footage. The live footage of them playing Night of the Assassins is so cool. Everyone's chilling while it looks like theyre playing on the mountains. Beutiful

    lost.fm

This seems to be relevant to this thread: Looks like there is still some life in last.fm, because as a subscriber I recently got in invite to check out the beta version of the upcoming last.fm site. If you're interested, here's some screenshots: New profile page: New artist page: Since this is a beta and a lot of things are still very rudimentary/non-existing, I will reserve judgement on the design for now, like the round profile images or the "track name - artist name" format... but yeah, there still seems to be some developement going on. There's a Followers/Following tab on the profile page, so I guess they want to put more emphasis on the social-networking aspect again? Apparently the "Following" tab is just everyone of my last.fm friends, while the "Followers" are just my 10 most recent ones... presumably the ones I got since the beta started. Doesn't make much sense, but eh... it's a beta. The radio/stream function is basically just an embedded Spotify, so that's probably as deep as that feature goes.

I fell in love with them after seeing them 2013.05.18. For disclose tour it was basically two of the most amazing lives I've been to even if I wasn't hardcore into any of the bands I was there for. The chemistry was so good. cocklobin's last live was amazing. XAA-XAA is always A++ so of course their first oneman was great. Their sponsored live also had really good chemistry and most of the bands that played were really good so that one is also up there. Minus Jin-Say Orchestra is an amazing band--and way better live than recorded. It's always so fun and weird, so their oneman is definitely up there. the best one you've ever seen (be it by internet, dvd etc.) once again I can't choose just one (._.; ) Souiumono (2012~spring 2014 timeframe) → It used to be a lot more fun... They had setlists that got everyone involved and it was easy to get into and it was a fun and exhausting (in a good way) experience. The most tired i ever left lives was after Souiumono. They were best at onemans, but lately they aren't considering setlists very well for that either.... Minus Jin-Say Orchestra → They are extremely consistent in quality and have never disappointed me. They change their setlists around regularly and I've always left loving them more than before. Belmosaic → They were so good, I'm still crushed about them being broken up. XAA-XAA → Honestly, the most exciting band for me right now to go see. BugLug → I always see them and am blown away by just how good it is--especially since I'm not so big on recorded stuff Ensoku → they're amazing. The end. Sel'm (2013~fall? 2014) → After Souiumono, the most exhausted I've ever left a live is from Sel'm. They're so skilled and then it's just crazy how much we got down at their lives. I've heard it's gotten boring now that John is gone though... I haven't seen them in about a year however.

ハイスイノナサ - 変身 01. 変身 02. 地図にない街 03. ブラインド The Japanese indie scene is a treasure trove of interesting, quality music; particularly in the genres of math and post-rock. Of all of the quality bands to have surfaced within these scenes in the last ten years, perhaps none are as entrancing to me as ハイスイノナサ. Their utterly brilliant soundscape is comprised of guitar, bass, piano, synth, drums, soft female vocals, and occasional electronic aspects. These elements combined with phenomenal compositional ability, atypical song structures and odd time signatures all come together to form a sound like nothing else out there. It’s hard to adequately describe ハイスイノナサ to somebody that hasn’t heard them before, but if you’re into technical, rhythmical brilliance and also happen to have a love for ostinatos, then this band has you covered. For all of their merits, however, one aspect of this band does leave something to be desired: the rate at which they release new music. Their last single, reflection, came out in the middle of 2013, and since then only one new song has managed to creep out of the woodwork as a part of last year’s Zankyo record Compilation vol.4. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that 変身 was one of my most anticipated releases of the year so far, but how did it stack up? The single kicks off with the title track. Initially I was somewhat underwhelmed by this song. It bears all the hallmarks of a typical ハイスイノナサ track; complex rhythms, a constantly repeating phrase that persists throughout the majority of the song, and increasing instrumental layering as the song progresses. Where 変身 disappointed me, however, was not in its compositional qualities but in its apparent stylistic regression. ハイスイノナサ have always had a habit for changing their formula in subtle but effective ways over the years, but 変身 doesn’t feel all that different from what has come before. Despite that initial disappointment, however, I’ve slowly warmed up to the song over the last month, and I have to admit that, due to its iterative nature, it’s actually quite a good track to introduce somebody to the band with. It may not be the most experimental or unique song in their discography, but it has all of the core elements of a quality ハイスイノナサ song. We then move on to 地図にない街, which so far is my favourite track from the single and probably one of my favourite songs by the band as a whole. Whereas the title track opted to utilise Ai Kamano’s vocals as more of an additional texture than as a method of lyrical delivery, 地図にない街 brings her to the forefront. Kamano has always been one of my favourite vocalists despite her somewhat limited range as her understated delivery is often an effective contrast to the rhythmical chaos that tends to lie beneath it. 地図にない街 is an interesting case in the sense that the song gives off a very chilled, relaxed vibe despite clearly still possessing a considerable degree of instrumental complexity (which is particularly noticeable between 1:47 and 2:17). It is this juxtaposition between these two elements that makes this song so enamouring to me, and I can comfortably say that this is one of my personal favourite songs of the year so far. Finally, ブラインド (blind) constitutes the final song on the single. Anybody that’s been paying attention to the review team’s Best New Tracks of March 2015 thread will have already seen CAT5’s own impressions of this track, and in many ways I concur with his general sentiment. ブラインド is one of the most catchy, accessible songs in the band’s discography. Yet despite somewhat streamlining their sound in order to achieve this, the song doesn’t feel lacking in its finesse. Quite the opposite, in fact, as it’s this change in sound that helps the song to stand out from the rest of their discography in a way that the title track struggles to do. Kamano’s subtle changes to her vocal delivery, singing in a lower register than usual, also helps to give the song its own distinctive flavour. It’s been a long wait for ハイスイノナサ’s 変身, and though it may only have been a three track release, I think that the wait was worth it. This is a band that simply doesn’t release material unless they have something worth releasing, and it is for that reason that I get much more mileage out of their music than I do out of most other bands’. Though the single as a whole may be a bit of a stylistic regression for the band (noticeably, the IDM elements introduced on reflection have pretty much disappeared from this release), it’s still very much a worthwhile release that currently stands tall as one of my favourites of the year thus far. ハイスイノナサ, esoteric as they are, may not be for everyone, but to put it simply: no other band does what they do as well as they do it.

    Visual Kei "Jazz" discussion

Actually it'd be really interesting to find the earliest examples of this trend. But before anything like that happens in my head I just have to post this masterpiece. : v Vidoll used jazzy tunes (and especially brilliant jazzy basslines) from the very beginning of their career, but Doll's bar "V.I.D" the most pure one.

Dir en Grey - because of the reasons you say. Gazette - they're everywhere, worshipped like some kind of gods, while they music isn't that good and they aren't good looking either. Try to tell their fans they suck... there is an instant drama. Old VK fans - they are not as extreme as the fans of these two bands, but some really can't imagine how people can listen to newer bands, not their old ones. It can be annoying in some cases. Not all act like this, though.
