I know that LUNA SEA are popular in Japan as well but in a certain crowd. They usually fill Tokyo dome (65,000 people) out of 126,000,000 in Japan. It's really not that much, of course they are BIG but then again look at glay or b'z for example. All I'm saying is that I honestly believe that Ryuichi makes more money (right now) on his solo career than by LUNA SEA, same goes for J. Also, it's not fair with a statement. Most people want to push their limits, try new things and grow as a person, same goes for a musician. If Ryuichi sang with the same hardrock vocals he did in his teens, he wouldn't have a chance to grow as a vocalist. How would you feel being stuck at the same job, doing the same things every day without any promotion or a chance to try new things from 1986-2013. I think it's basically the same thing. So yeah, I too, as you, actually prefer his old vocals (my main obsession of LUNA SEA is pre-MOTHER), but I still appreciate his new singing style; which btw isn't actually new since he's been singing like this since 1997~. EDIT: Also, what you may seem as uninspiring and overproduced crap is pure gold for someone else. Obviously a lot of people like his solo-era and I think most people who hates on him are stubborn fans who are stuck in the 90's.

DEAD END Tribute -SONG OF LUNATICS-

My quick thoughts.... (mostly on vocals because that's my primary area of expertise lol) Believe it or not, Hyde's vocals were the absolute best of anyone here. At times he sounded EXACTLY like Morrie from back then. The chick on Serafine was awwwwwful with a capital A. Bad bad idea. She has no range and no passion or insistence. Sugizo was the only thing making that listenable. (Barely tho) Ryuichi, as much as I love him, can't cover Morrie. Period. Two completely different voices and styles. Tetsu from Nil and Yasu also did a good job on their songs. Though, Tetsu gets the edge because Yasu's song was way simple, almost no way he could have ruined it. Unless he was Kiyoharu. ;p For the most part, based on this thing alone, only Hyde has any business covering Morrie more than once. And I really hate to admit that, believe me.

    Genres...?!

I think a lot depends on whether you consider the "look" of a band to be relevant to their genre. I don't at all. A lot of stuff like old Kuroyume I just tag as "Gothic Rock" because even though the drumming is more Darkthrone than Joy Division, in general it sounds like gothic rock to me. Bands like Merry Go Round sound similar, but use a lot of blues scales in their composition... but calling them "Blues Rock" would be insane, so they are tagged as "Gothic Rock" as well. When you get to newer stuff like NoGod, Gazette, and Rentrer en Soi, "Hard Rock" or "Alternative Metal" is probably the most appropriate. The weird shuffling, pseudo-bluesy, rockabilly style that Gazette do occasionally is harder to classify; honestly in their earlier days they sounded much more punk, and occasionally even a little ska. Cali≠Gari occasionally delve into surf rock like "Maguro" but they also sound like a post-punk band sometimes—maybe something like The Birthday Party. Pierrot started playing some sort of gothic rock/New Wave fusion, but songs like "Psychedelic Lover" are totally pop-punk. Dir en grey have been fluctuating between melodic death metal, sludge metal, metalcore, and various other genres as of late, so "Alternative Metal" is just an easier description. Versailles sound like a power metal throwback band to me—I could see them being tagged as either "Power Metal" or "Speed Metal." The vocals are different, but otherwise they sound like an offshoot of X Japan with a little Judas Priest thrown in... and maybe more keyboards. If you want to just listen to Japanese stuff in iTunes, why not make a playlist...?

I tag things as VK because there's no ID3 field for "scene" and sometimes you just want to listen to some trannies, ya know?

I think when it comes to throwing in random bits of another language, it goes over best when it isn't really audible to most people, or at least not blatantly saying "this isn't in English." For example, the ending theme of "Wreck-It Ralph" was in Japanese, but because of the vocal mixing and overall business of the song, none of my family members who saw it with me believed that it wasn't in English because of the few lines that actually were in English. The same goes for vkei in a sense. Take "Myaku" by Dir en Grey, for example: parts of that song are in English but because of Kyo's Tourette's it doesn't really sound like it is in any language, so I just -assumed- it was Japanese until I actually saw the lyrics: "SKY. BOX. SAND. GOD. DREAM." etc. Had I been able to actually understand what he was saying, it wouldn't have had the same affect on me. Sticking with small phrases should do the same as that example. Other Western bands do that, but with (cringing as I type this) 'normal' foreign languages. Like U2 using Spanish, and 30 Seconds to Mars using French. Unfortunately, Japanese is like the epitome of 'foreign' to most occidental people, even though you can't really concretely measure the degree in which a language is not English. It either is, or isn't. Just because you are more likely to learn French in high school doesn't mean it is any less not English than Swahili. Personally adding a request for "mawaru mawaru."

Bo Ningen are the band I've been constantly dry humping lately. Noisy. Psychedelic. Real dank kush. They'll will make you want to throw up and cry and and scream and pee blood at the same time.

Dude, just do whatever works best for you. Honestly I tag most of my Japanese music as just Japanese. Some artist that don't fall under wishy washy genre like say Sabbat I'll label them as their appropriate genre. Now if you tag things poorly on Last.fm IMA CUT YOU >:U Otherwise if you're on the interbutts recommending something to a new listener, then use genres that are descriptive and avoid using vague wishy washy genres like Visual Kei or Jrock or J metal and stupid shit like that. Ugh and calling a band J metal or Jrock is so weeabooish and people that do that need to drink acid. You don't call Blind Guardian Gmetal or Kukrynsky R-rock or Megadeth Ametal. I feel like doing that will unfairly stigmatized the band as some sorta animu theme song band and driving away potential serious listeners. Oh and another rule of mine is I never classify a VK band by the clothing. I label Versailles as Symphonic/Power Metal, not Aristocratic Vampire Kei Metal.

I've been in a Sigh mood lately, if you like experimental black metal. I prefer their more symphonic / baroque influenced stuff than their trippier songs, but that's just my personal preference. More symphonic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lT3MVwnnsc More trippy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DhSjx_D0lI In between:
